Now, question: Is it wrong for girls to be exotic dancers? Just saying that makes you sould like you're talking about a stripper! But can you picture lil ol me as a stripper? I've been studying for 2 years to bellydance, which IS an exotic dance, and everytime it has ever come up the conversation usually goes like this:
Me: no, not BALLET....BELLYdance Other person: Oh...well...um, I've gotta go...
Not fun! It kind of kills the conversation after that and everyone shys away from me. It sometimes sucks a** being different.
So let us discuss: *Bellydancing: Okay? not okay? *Use of sexuality in dancing *Word association *Discrimination

I beleive it really depends on who you talk to anymore, if you talk to someone who dislikes stippers and so on, Then you'd get that side of the story. I believe that it's not a stripper, for the simple reason it's just a dance, and they never really take clothing off, if at all any then it's not much. The use of sexuality while dancing is beginning to seen more and more as our generation keeps on going. If anyone would ever want to stop it they'd be making a revolution against hip-hop artists, especially the fans. The reason i used hip-hop is because when a dj throws on a hip-hop cd, you start seeing people Freak Dancing in groups or with there partner.

On bellydancing:
It's quite okay. Harmless and, while quite subjective, nowhere near as raunchy as stripping. It's just something that looks great.
Sexuality has always been present in dance, ever since we took out the jumping and senseless "bowing then spinning in a circle". It is, after all, the vertical expression of the horizontal desires.
People are stupid. They believe that knowing anything that makes you sexy in anyone's eyes makes you a slut. So, if you're thought of as promiscous, you get the hand, unless they want you.

Belly dancing is about as slutty as church. Whoever has a problem with you belly dancing is just a moron.
If you were belly dancing naked on a stage surrounded by horny, drunken men all the while picking up one dallar bills with you v****a, then yes...I could see their point..but cmon...belly dancing?

Hm. Nice to see i'm the minority here. :3
Frankly, I think it's wrong. Don't take me a silly way - I'm not going to turn around and ridicule anyone for doing such, neither will I impose upon them my views and beat them with some large book - but I personally just find it rather... yes, I guess, slutty.
I'm not a dancer. I enjoy standing up and maybe doing a few 'moves' here and there on the dancefloor, but it's by myself, even if there are girls surrounding me. I don't find dancing fun because it always employs the use of sexuality to seem appealing. Bellydancing is - to me - just the same: it's an exotic dance which, if i'm not mistaken, uses the body in an exotic dance with seemingly sexual undertones. Sure, it's not the same as stripping, but I figure it's on that wavelength, so to speak.
Towards Reliving-The-Past's point on hip-hop dancing, I also find that morally wrong also. I don't know the terms for anything - Grinding, whatever - but that just isn't my thing. My morals tell me that this sort of bodily movement is wrong, simply.
Other than that, I can't really argue much against any of it. To each their own, I guess, I just won't be 'enjoying the show' by any bellydancers some time soon?

Bellydancing as an exotic dance? Oh please! The Tango's EASILY raunchier than that (no really! Tango is often considered sex on the dancefloor... by both admirers & haters of the dance)! Belly dancing is attractive & sexy, yes! But uhh... nowhere near on the level as a strip tease (unless you make it one).
Having worked as a stripper (3 nights! Betcha didn't know that about me!), & wanting to learn Bellydancing (& yes, I want to learn Tango as well...), well... let me put it this way... I've never seen 40 year old *ahem* curvacious (to put it very nicely) women strip in public (not all that sure I'd want to... sweatdrop )... but I have seen them Bellydance in public... not an unnattractive sight at all!
Bellydancing is no worse than funk dancing (what Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera do) is these days & I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with their kids taking funk dance lessons... blaugh
Bellydancers keep their clothes on while learning to be more confident & use their bodies to their best extent.
Stripping is fun & all, but clothes stay on vs clothes go off... not on the same level, I'm sorry.

I have heard that Tango is sex on the dancefloor. (I can also tango) It's nice to know how some people feel about my hobbies! and JewelsSparkle: dude, that's seriously awesome. I now can actually say that I 'know' a stripper! (I'm really hyper right now---yay free period!) One more thing: Does age matter? Can a 14 year old bellydance? (coughs..ahem... rolleyes )

I don't see an age limit (or restriction) on Bellydancing, that would just be silly blaugh Everyone should be able to enjoy it!
Lol, about being a stripper, I love stripping & I love lapdancing... the reason I didn't keep doing it is because I hate dirty old men! If there weren't any dirty old men, I'd still be stripping... it was so much fun! (Rather similar to the time I performed a 5-10 min play wearing only a bright pink bikini & some body paint... you only have 2 options: be completely paranoid about your body, or get over it. They were both great confidence boosters).

Oh, come on now love, dirty old men need love too!
In fact, that's one of the only things I'm looking forward to about my adulthood- I get to be one.
Anyway, bellydancing is an art - on that employs the body as a sensual and beautiful thing. It's not wrong, any more than Michelangelo's David is wrong, even at 14.

I think Belly dancing is more than a-ok...It is a sensual dance yes, but the mambo can just be as arousing for instance. I think that's what make dancing the most controversial of all forms of art is that is is essentially sensual and sexual, invoking our primitive selves...A mating dance if you would razz I do agree that people are stupid to think that you are a slut because you belly dance - pole dancing has gotten a lot of less of a level of slutiness due to Oprah and Teri Hatcher going on about it...But I think that pole dancing with removing of clothing should be more private and personal. But I guess I'm traditional and old fashioned in that sense.

I am going to agree that bellydancing is fairly chaste; I have seen performances, and the first thing that got me was how exotic it was; it's a truly otherworldly flavor, more than sexual, in my opinion.
I will state that I don't do strip clubs and don't intend to; however, dance (even pole dancing taken as over-the-top rhythms instead of just a strip gimmack) is an artform, and one I have much appreciation for. Prolly helps that my musical training's 75% Jazz though.
I will state that I hate the women who swallow mercury to get their bellys to that 'optimal' flop effect for bellydancing, though. I'm sorry, poisoning yourself is not sexy or exotic.
