I don't exactly hide it, but I don't have any Furry buttons advertising it. I've got a tail and collar and ears and legwarmers and such. I wear them all proudly, no matter where I am. When people ask, I tell them my Fursona is a Wolf.
People ask more about the collar and the five-point star I wear more often than they ask about the tail. Perhaps many of them think it's just a teenage silly fashion thing. :/

I'm really "taking small steps". Really I just read and roll play furry I did get a wolf tail and ears at Comic-Con 2010 and I am working on becoming my avatar.
So I guess I am in the closet but, i'm still working on it...

I would love to be open about being a furry...but at the end of my sophomore year, when a few kids learned that I was indeed a furry, they started bashing on the fandom. Most of them were messing around for the most part...but one kid was just so malicious about it, actually, saying stuff about it...I just got offended and destroyed everything furry I owned. Big mistake. I regret it sooooooooo much, because I had some really good stuff...needless to say, I started keeping the furry thing to myself, and since most of the people who knew I was one graduated last year or moved, people just forgot. Only my closest friends know I`m a furry, and now, as ashamed as I am to admit it, I am scared to even wear my collar to school. My parents don`t even know about it. So to answer your question, no, I am not open about being a furry. Maybe someday...I hope.

This topic seems to come up somewhat often.
Personally I keep my furryness to myself, I see no reason why everyone else has to be informed. I was never really into wearing tails and stuff like that anyway. Sometime I will wear cat ears, but that is very rarely. Never really been bothered about it though.

Ive never acted like a fox or cat, and i didnt even know that they made tails. seems like a bit much, but ill probably get a collar and start acting like one soon enough.

If people ask I tell them. I don't flaunt it though, and i in no way attempt to be a "high and mighty educator of the great ignorant masses" (I put the quotes there because i really hate people that are like that). But i have a big Furry Pride emblem stamped on my computer screen at work and i do sometimes look at them on deviantart when I have some free time, and if people ask why, I tell them. Then the usual questions ensue: Are you gay always seems to be the first one (Damn you CSI), followed by the sexual fetish questions, do I screw animals, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Also, with moving around so much I have to re-explain to everyone I meet. The questions usually start when they see me changing and discover that my back is covered in snow leopard spots. From then on I'm labeled as a freak until they get to know me. I guess it's just human nature to shun those who are different and to throw them out like a sore cover leper. This goes for everyone that either has trouble fitting in or just simply can't fit in. But i think it's time for me to get off the box and give someone else a turn. I'm 23, married to a gorgeous woman who accepts me no matter what I'm into. I have a great job that I usually find myself playing the part of the boss, and I am a VERY PROUD member of the FURRY WAY.

I think my dad was suspicious when I was 14 and I left the computer to get a drink. He found that i was looking up pictures on VCL to copy and improve my drawing skills. I came back and saw that he was sifting through the site to get a glimps of what I am into. He questioned me about it and then said, "Just be careful." And then he said, "Remember rule 34 and 35." (34= If it exists there is porn. 35= Where there is porn there are weirdos.), But I also have a very accepting dad who was actually dreading the day that I was going tell him I'm gay... Still wondering why though.

mmm.... i would like to tell others im a furry but..... they just make fun of me. They become scared of me, and wont talk. I once told my teacher about it, since i was always looking up furries on google, and when she looked at this certain site.... oh god was she concerned about me. heh.... even my own mother thought about sendin me to a shrink! Ah man.... not the best time of my life, yeah? Fortunatley everyone seems to have forgoten about the little incident. Now the only ones who know are my friends, one of them being a furry himself, and im rather scared of telling others. But... man i want to tell others so badly! I want them to know who i really am....

Well i was never really open about it. Then I started like collecting wolf things like poster plushies and art/ And they started asking questions. Then just recently like a week ago 2 of my friends came up to me and stait up asked me if i was a furry. I told then yes and they seemed to be ok with it. So im still not to open about it but i'd rather have people who ask know.

i suppose my little journey to have people see the good in furries is just futile..... Truth be told.... even if people ask, i tend to shy away from the subject. unless it's my friends of course. I tell them just about anything. i guess im half open half closed. But i believe that if people can't be open minded about who they truly are, then they will live with regrets. for just once.... i want someone to see me as something that is not lower than human trash whenever i try to let it out... wow, im acting a bit dramatic here XD.

I'm pretty open, where I live, nobody seems to know what a furry is, so it's easy to educate them properly and not have to worry about the hate rumors. I don't wear my costume to school or anything, but there are others at my school who do, and nobody really cares. It's pretty nice.
