When you hear a skinny person complain about being overweight? I've overheard it a few times from random people and occasionally a friend. These people look like they're 120lbs but they will say in a whiny condescending voice, "Oh I'm sooooo fat"! And I'm not talking about celebrities because, let's face it, most of them think they're overweight. Nicole Richie is 96lbs and still thinks she's fat! But I'm talking about normal people like you and I that couldn't be anywhere near 150lbs or 140lbs for that matter, stick thin just about and they think they're fat. Maybe I'm just overreacting because tabloid magazines paint fake images of what the perfect weight is that we all have or still strive to be. Maybe I'm just too sensetive, but when I hear people saying this or even a friend that weights no more than 135lbs, I admit, I get hurt because then I think, 'Well, if she thinks she's fat and she's 120lbs - 140lbs then I must be morbidly obese to her'.

Am I being too sensetive? Has anyone else ever felt this way? How does it make you feel and how do you deal with it?

((Sorry if this was already a topic! sweatdrop ))

First off, do not say that they are the "normal people." Normal is the weight that a person feels comfortable at, not what society dictates.
Also, don't mistake "whining" as someone thin honestly thinking they need to lose weight. That sounds dangerously like a disorder that should be talked about.

I do understand when those who seem to be acceptable in society's eyes fuss about a weight related feature.

For instance, at one of my guard practices a thin girl sat down and said she hated sitting down because it accents a paunch, or something like that. A big promptly said, "___, shut up."

I think some are unaware of the privilege they have, and I think we all forget that every single one of us has the thought that we must lose weight no matter what ingrained into our minds.

It does irritate me, but I try to remember everyone (well, most people... or a lot of people I know, anyway) has self-image issues.
Some thin girls seem to do it for attention, others I think truly feel that way about themselves. Like they say, you are your toughest judge (it goes something like that, right?).
**My train of thought is lacking at this point, perhaps I should get back to you at a later time sweatdrop

The reason it bugs me is a little different - it bugs me because I've been that girl (and depending on where you draw the line on thinness, I might be being that girl right now). And even while I'm having those thoughts I know they're stupid and harmful. I try not to say that s**t out loud because it's going to offend people, but even if you met me and didn't know that I'm beating myself up for not being 10 pounds smaller, and you liked me and thought I was a decent human being, I'd still be having those hateful thoughts towards myself in my mind. I don't usually like to quote Blood for Blood, because they piss me off and I disagree with them nearly all the time, but after one particularly vitriolic song, the guy goes "If you're offended by this song, well I'm ******** offended by the way I had to grow up. So who's really been slighted?"

It's a problem that goes beyond whining over a wee bulge - and sure, some people do it to fish for compliments, but to me the problem isn't that they're being tacky, but that "thin" = compliment and "fat" = insult. I mean... can we just use adjectives to mean their meanings and nothing else? Clearly not, not yet - but that's where my ire rises up, not at the whole "shut your skinny mouth" part of the discussion.

Who are you to decide who's fat and who isn't? If someone gets treated badly because of their weight, I sure as hell would never try to tell them that their experiences "don't count" or "aren't worthy" just because they don't weigh as much as I do. In short, no. It doesn't bother me. It isn't some kind of elite club or competition x__X

I hear where you're coming from, and I agree. It is aggravating, but most of the time I just smirk and think quietly to myself, "You may be too fat for yourself, but you're too skinny for me."

Wow... I was hoping this guild would be a place to get away from that kind of body policing

THIS.

stop talking about how people are too skinny. they cant help it about as much as we cant help being fat. we need to stop this "us vs them" mentality and love everyone for who they are.

The important part to note in Munchkin's post is "too skinny FOR ME." Noone is required to find all body types attractive or desirable. Munchkin is allowed to have a preference for fatter bodies. Yes, we need to look past what people look like and base our like or dislike of a person on WHO they are, not WHAT they look like. Does this mean that everyone needs to start salivating over fat bodies? No.

It didn't seem to me like she meant that in an "I don't find you attractive" way. If that is in fact what she meant, then I'm sorry. >.<

I think we are socially conditioned to say "We're fat" because we don't fit the image that media says we should... thus if we tell ourselves were fat all the time it reinforces our consciousness about the issue...

fat is just an adjective, though. nothing more. it's not a 4 letter word like alot of people think it is.
