Hey, i'm fairly new to this guild. and this is my first topic.
The thing I wanted to talk about, is something I feel can be a big issue to some girl's self esteem.
You see, i'm not even a big girl, i'm actually pretty small. But I know I can feel ALOT bigger than I am if my weight increases.
Even if i'm exactly the same size, if my weight inscreases, I feel SO much bigger.
My friend is the same way.
She is taller and slimmer than me yet is convinced that because she weighs more, that she is fatter.
I feel like if I were 20 pounds lighter and looked the same I would feel THAT much better.
So, do you guys ever feel like that?
Like your weight doesn't do justice to your appearance? Does it ever get you down?

I weigh way over what i actually look like.
and sometimes when i watch weightloss shows with someone that ways less than me they look WAY bigger and i always doubt my actually size.

You can throw away the scale and not worry about the numbers, especially if you're saying that you don't look any different whether or not you gain a few pounds.

Who knows? You might feel a little freer and more confident without it.

Yeah, that makes me feel so weird. but I guess it all depends on how much fat vs muscle and your height. It still confuses me though, like you said, if someone bigger than me weighs the same sometimes I begin to believe that that is my actual size

Yeah, sometimes I like to think of myself as 20 pounds lighter just because it makes me feel better. Though it shouldn't, because it doesn't matter what size I am.

Right now I'm so happy I'm afraid of the scale. My boyfriend says I've lost weight over the summer (he picks me up a lot) but I don't see how that's possible... I don't want anything to ruin my happiness.
Focusing on the way I look has made me a far happier person than I was when I cared about the number more than anything else. (: I used to care about a tenth of a pound but now I just care about I feel in my own skin. (:

I read and reread what you wrote and at first I wasn't too sure what you meant, but I think I know now. It's sort of like when I look in the mirror and say I catch myself on a good day, I look like I've lost 20lbs but if I weight myself on the scale, it says I've gained 5lbs to 10lbs (I weight 185lbs but it can go up to 195lbs) and so I feel overweight and I feel bad about myself.

My trick is to not rely on the scale. If I feel good, that's all that matters. And if my size 14 pants feel loose, I feel even better. But I still feel happy not matter my size.

That's a good way to think about it smile

Yeah, the scale isn't good too rely on. You're right

Self-confidence and self-esteem hopefully comes from within, not reliant on a pants size or number on the scale. smile It takes a while to get to that point though, which is why I avoid scales and get annoyed when I cant' find stuff that fits me when I go shopping. Seriously, I had to buy a belt in the men's section yesterday.

*Sneaky non-member ninja post!*

Just browsing lol!

Anyways, skimming through this thread, I couldn't help but notice you girls have a serious misconception/confusion to clear up!

How much you weigh, in terms of what the scale reads, is really a measurement of how much gravity is affecting your body, not how fat you are.

See, muscle is much more dense than fat and takes much less up less space. If you have two women who both weigh 250lbs on the bathroom scale but once is much more active than the other, the active one is going to look much smaller than the inactive woman.

The more you work out and build muscles, the more fat you burn. The more muscles you have, the more calories you burn per day but before your body starts burning fat you are going to gain weight from the muscles! You must gain to lose! (this is why a lot of people quit new exorcise regimes and claim "It's never worked!" )

To find out how "fat" you are, you have to take a Body Mass Index test which is where they measure a fold of skin to see how thick your fat layer is.

So even if one day you step on the scale and find your self 20lbs heavier than normal, it may just be that you're stronger rather than fatter.

Not a member (yet, just browsing) but I guess I'll chime in.

As a guy I personally do not use the scale, I go off of what I look like.

Now as a guy, I still have had a mild eating disorder (okay that's what some have called it) where I basically ate 1000 calories a day for longer than the summer resulting in me being less than 152 at 6'2. Because I never looked at the scale, I never noticed if I gained or lost weight I only went off of how it made my body look and if I was acceptable to myself.

But anyways, away from that...

Honestly, I think the best bet is for individuals to live their lives and love themselves. Don't place values based on the skill and in fact, throw the scale out and only concentrate on if you feel your best.

If you do not feel your best, work on yourself, don't judge your value by the scale and just work on yourself until you feel that you like what you are.

*Key note* Working on yourself does not have to encompass losing a single pound it can all be emotional/mental development if you really want it to be.
