We've got quite a colorful group for the Sands this time, A'airmine. Are you excited? You barely ate, I noticed.

Excited? Was that really the right word to use? A'air stroked the foreleg of his dragon as he waited out in the Weyrbowl for the Candidates to start filing in, the message for their morning lesson having been passed out during the evening meal the night before, as well as during the breakfast that he'd shoveled his way through less than half a candlemark earlier.

This was one of the more important lessons to offer a Candidate, basic instructions on how to handle themselves now they there was a chance for a clutch soon enough. Signs had been showing that the Queen was getting close, at least that's what gossip amongst the riders and several Weyrfolk. A'air took much of the rumors in stride, but that didn't help him with the nervous excitement that seemed to well up in his stomach with each passing day.

You're just like a child, still excited over everything. If you're not too careful you'll end up getting sick and scaring off the group.

Yes mother.

A'air rolled his eyes and gave Templath a firm slug on the leg as he stepped away and towards the table he'd drug out. Several objects were displayed on its surface, mostly tools that any Candidate would already know - but it never hurt to go over the basics, right? Cleaning, feeding - not to mention general anatomy. When the Candidates arrived he'd get the lesson started, and the sooner the better. A'air wasn't in a hurry by any means, but he had a feeling no one wanted to hang around and hear more than they really needed to - he'd been like that when he was a Candidate.

Here they come. Big smiles Templath. Big smiles.

The blue dragon lifted his head over in the direction of the tunnels, waiting to see who emerged first. While A'air wasn't the type to deal out punishment to those who didn't want to show up on time or those who didn't show up at all, the man did have a good enough memory to make sure they got some additional chores headed their way - though for the most part the Candidates here were decent enough. He doubted any of them would risk their chance to stand come a clutch on the Sands.

IC Notes:

  • Candidatemaster A'air of Blue Templath has been the Candidate master for the better part of the last five or so Turns, and has seen many Candidates come and go under his watchful eye. Before taking the role of Candidatemaster he was a Searchrider, and a rather good one at that. He's known for telling really bad puns but providing an excellent shoulder to cry on in case someone needs it. Rumor has it that he's currently in a relationship with someone higher up in the Weyr rankings, and has a child with that person. . . .but it's all speculation (and likely not true at all).

He's 29 turns old, having Impressed Templath when he was 13.

  • Blue Templath is a former Searchdragon, having been sent back to help with Weyr duties after an accident during a lesson left him with a damaged wing that makes flying rather difficult. He is neither large nor small, settling in at a decent size, and has a very dusky hue of blue to his hide. Templath is known for being rather snarky, but generally all around a good fellow. He seems to like bad puns just as much as his rider, and he shows a fondness for people who are able to openly laugh around others.

Templath is 16 turns old, having hatched and Impressed to A'air when the man was 13.

  • This lesson will cover basic care for a dragon (to assist a Dragonrider) as well as the subject of Aytpical/Dud eggs on the sands.

OOC Notes:

  • This RP will last for ONE WEEK, ending on September 8th. It may or may not be extended depending on the amount of activity. ICly, this event takes place over a period of several hours. THE RP HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 11

  • There is no post order, but try not to get out of hand. If you want to interact directly with A'air and/or Templath, be patient and you will be responded to.

  • Do not overpost/assume. If you start a fight in the lesson, don't continue it on for several posts - you will be responded to rather quickly.

In order to eat a good breakfast and deck himself out immaculately (as far as was possible in standard candidate regalia) Antigonos had got up extremely early that morning. With that good solid meal inside him (plus two mugs of klah), however, he was the perfect picture of a bright young man ready to learn. As he approached the candidate master and his dragon, the young harper cemented the image with a bright (maybe slightly roguish) grin, and a sweeping bow.

"Candidatemaster A'air, Templath; a very good morning to you both!" he called as he crossed the final distance between them, allowing his dark eyes to flick briefly to the table and the items which rested upon it. "I trust I find you both well this morning?" he went on, turning his attention back onto the pair fully and pushed his fingers through his hair and offering another smile; this was only his second lesson as a candidate, so he was still working on making sure the blue rider remembered him, and had a positive impression of him. Even if he never Impressed, this man would be a useful ally.

"I've told my flitt to stay in the barracks," he added as an (apparent) afterthought, "but she's still not quite perfect on following instructions, so if she materializes during the lesson and disturbes it I apologize in advance, I assure you I'll send her off again right away if she does." In truth, he was pretty sure she'd stay put but he wanted to bring attention to the fact that he was being a responsible candidate and not lugging his pet along with him when it was inappropriate, he was pretty sure one or two would turn up with a firelizard beside them today.

This would be her second turn Standing, but Galeia felt bored before she even came into the room. She’d been over this material several times already and her acute memory made every repetition more tedious. And even before entering Candidacy herself, she’d grown up a weyrbrat and had heard every bleeding detail from her friends that had stood. Dragons, she thought, were something she couldn’t understand any better short of Impression.

Still, all the turns of her tutelage under harpers would not let her be disrespectful to any teacher. She dressed simply but well for the lesson and upon reaching the bowl gave A’air and the blue a short greeting that was courteous as it was brief, and stood somewhat toward the back. She preferred the front, but at eighteen turns, she would have obstructed the view of the younger Candidates. She glanced over the heads of those arriving, but didn’t spot anyone she cared to linger by yet. What drew her eye before she could finish the search though, was the young man chatting with A’air. She knew the fellow from afar, by reputation at least. A Harper, like herself, though he’d Walked before coming to Benden. She never had spoken with him, but something about his airs made her doubt she’d feel much kindship with the man.

Winderick pushed his way to the front of the line, far too excited to remember his manners. Today was his first lesson with A'air and Templath. Ever since he was Searched he'd been dying to get up close with a dragon again. Even though he saw them every day, he was too shy to bother them when they were with their riders, knowing they probably had better things to do, so today's lesson was exactly the opportunity he'd been dreaming of. He felt charged up in spite of waking early with hardly any sleep behind him.

When he entered the bowl he was surprised to see Antigonos already talking to Candidatemaster A'air and apparently making a good impression. Jealous that the older candidate made it in before him, he lost most of their conversation however when his eyes turned to the magnificent blue standing before him. As he took Templath in he felt a lump in his throat. Winderick always felt pretty confident in himself, but whenever he looked into those eyes he experienced a presence much larger than himself, not just in a physical sense but internally as well, like looking at the stars. Swallowing his nerves, Winderick squared his shoulders and approached the candidatemaster and his dragon. He stopped beside Gale and gave her his most confident smile, nudging her arm to get her attention. "Morning," he whispered, not wanting to interrupt Antigonos's brown-nosing.

He was dressed in his best outfit and the extra effort he took grooming himself for the occasion showed, but still didn't compare much to the older and wealthier candidates.

Luckily for Kadayon, contact reflective surfaces had been minimized today, and he was able to make it out of the barracks and to the Weyrbowl on time. He'd only stopped a grand total of three times to check his reflection, which had to be a record. All three times his hair had been as he'd left it and thus he could approach the gathering of candidates with his chin held high. His mother would have been so proud of him.

Somebody was already speaking with the Candidatemaster when he arrived and so he was forced to wait until the other teen was finished before he could offer his greetings. He was polite, after all, even if the thought that someone else had gotten there before him made his blood boil. "Good morning Candidatemaster. You and Yours are doing well?"

Standing next to Antigonos was surely fate's way of messing with his head and Kadayon tried to stand a little taller. It was rather ridiculous, comparing himself to a young man practically five turns older than him, but the younger candidate was not about to be upstaged.

Sileny had been here before. The room was familiar, the candidate master and his dragon were familiar. The only things which had changed were the candidates, and even some of them were the same. She found her attention captured by a very tall young man momentarily. Anti-agony or something like that. Names weren't really Sil's strong suit, particularly when it came to people she'd not been introduced to. Not that it mattered, she figured. He'd age out soon if he didn't Impress this time around, it seemed to her. She shared a similar risk, but the prospect wasn't so horrible for her. She could always return to her craft.

She sighed and tossed her head. With her hair pulled back, the action was not particularly fetching or attention-getting, but it wasn't meant to be. It was an impatient gesture. She knew this would be an hours-long discussion of information she'd already heard in the past. Not that she'd had lots of opportunity to put it into practice since the last time she'd heard the lecture. Like her fellow candidates, many of the riders of the Weyr tended to give her a wide berth, which didn't bother her in the least. She didn't need them, or anybody.

Galeia looked surprised, but pleased, to see Winderick. “Oh hey. You snuck up on me.” Her voice was kept low, though there would really be no limitations to talking until the lesson actually started. “Cripes, I guess I’m underdressed.” She nodded Winderick’s clothes and glanced to Antigonos with a grimace. She always had been a poor dresser, and it would never have bothered her an ounce if Harpers weren’t supposed to be as appealing to the eye as the ear. She sighed in consternation at her muted and unfashionable dress then changed topics. “Oh well. Have you had A’air and Templath before? Nice pair.”

. . . why did they all get dressed so neatly? A'air was almost baffled at the downright clean appearance of most of these Candidates as they filled in, his memory serving that he often was covered in mud and dung whenever it was time for lessons - regardless of how early in the day it was. Of course it was because he was usually cleaning pens because of something he'd done or something he had yet to do, but either way those were fond memories.

Focus, A'airmine. You're being spoken to.

The Candidatemaster snapped out of his thoughts as he was approached by a young man - Antigonos, if he wasn't mistaken - and he offered a large grin in response to the greeting. As the boy continued on to speak about his flitter it made the man think about one he'd seen earlier in the day, a lovely silver that seemed to be hissing as it made its rounds somewhere. He wanted to investigate that.

"We're good, thanks. And no worries about your flitter - I personally don't mind the little beasts. Kinda makes me wish I had one of my own sometimes, but what can a guy do about it? Templath takes up all my time. You're welcome to go over and talk to him if you'd like Antigonos, he's pretty fond of Candidates."

A gentle pat on the shoulder was given to the Harper youth as the Candidatemaster turned away to greet the rest of the group, his whole goal to promote a sense of comradeship amongst all of the people before him. Saying their names, giving them casual conversation - he hoped it would all pay off should they Impress. His eye fell on a girl he'd seen before, this was her second or so round in the Candidate lessons, and he gave her a nice smile as well as he raised a hand in greeting.

"Galeia, come up and join us over here. No need to lurk in the back, we might talk about something today you've never heard before - or I might actually need your help. If I recall you've got a sharper memory than I do and I'll need you to catch any mistakes I make."

He would have said more but a young man was soon at her side - Winderwick, Templath told him from a moment or two of guessing, and he moved on to see who else was around. He was going to move back to Templath's side when another voice hailed his ears, and he turned to greet yet another who'd arrived and stood now where Antigonos was.

"Oh, morning Kadayon. The two of us are doing pretty well, thanks for asking. How's your mother, have you spoken to her lately? I bet she's head over heels about you being a Candidate again, hoping to get a dragon."

The man continued to chat, unaware he'd missed another student slipping in. Templath noticed, and his eyes whirled a moment in their color before the dragon decided to give the girl the greeting His had missed.

Hello Sileny. Are you hiding?

The dragon only knew her name because of daily lessons, and from A'air's constant review of who was who.

The pair would wait a few more minutes before beginning, allowing any final stragglers to come in without fear of punishment.

Antigonos chuckled softly and gave a slight nod to the candidatemaster's words. "Thank you sir, I'm pleased to hear it; as you can imagine given I own one I'm fond of them too, so long as they're reasonably well behaved... Still, I see there are plenty of others here to greet you, I shall leave you to it!" Giving A'air a last smile, Antignos stepped aside, moving closer to Templath... He could never tell if dragons were looking at him or not, and honestly it disturbed him a little. Still, he was sure he'd get the knack.

"Hello again," he said with a smile to the blue, "I look forward to seeing what the lesson will be today; I have much to learn about your kind!" He hoped he didn't get a blue; so little chance of any real power... Well, he supposed he could work his way into controlling somebody with a bigger dragon, but it would be better to get a brown or a bronze himself; that was still no guarantee of power, but he was not the kind of man who relied on guarantees. One way or another, he got his way, no matter how many proverbial throats he had to slit.

Sil was startled to have been addressed directly by Templath. She hadn't expected the blue to recognize her, and would have been surprised if his rider had known her either. And yet one of them must have, for the dragon had definitely spoken her name. She wasn't sure if this was a good thing or not.

She did know, however, that she could not ignore the dragon's greeting, and so she stepped forward from where she'd been to make a proper greeting to both dragon and rider. Apologies would be necessary, too, she thought. She supposed she would have to make some, even though it was not her usual habit. She wished she knew why his eyes' color had changed briefly. What was he thinking of her?

"Good morning, Templath," she said, inclining her head to the blue once she'd drawn close enough that she wouldn't have to raise her voice. Screeching across the room was unnecessary.

"I'm not hiding. I should have greeted you and A'air when I came in, but you seemed occupied. I hope you'll let your rider know I meant no disrespect."

"Me too." Looking at the other candidates, Winderick felt he didn't make a particularly good impression. His best clothes were simply the garments he managed to keep clean and clear of dirt while he was working with his uncle, plain looking hand-me-downs from his older brother like most of his clothes. Even so he felt rather confident in himself. He might not look the best, but he knew his cleverness would shine through.

He shook his head, adding quietly, "This is my first time. What are they like?"

Before Gale could answer A'air started around the room, greeting candidates one by one. Although the candidatemaster was much more experienced, Winderick felt far more excited than he did intimidated. When A'air came to him he straightened and said, "Good morning Candidatemaster A'air. I'm looking forward to this lesson!"

Tia did her best to look inconspicuous, a little later breaking away from her last chore than she would have liked, she still had flour on her clothing and braid, which, with her height, didn't exactly help her attempt to not stand out.

Neither did her slight frown, still in a bad mood about her argument before with one of the candidates, and she slipped into a seat hastily and inched down trying to look smaller. It was an important lesson, and she was sure she'd get in trouble, which she felt guilty for, even while she thought of some angry excuses to herself as to why she was straggling.

Feeling guilty at making excuses, even without voicing them, wasn't helping her mood either.

“They’re-“ and she was interrupted by A’air’s approach. She looked up from chatting more alertly with an open expression. “My pleasure, Candidatemaster.” Others close to aging out might have felt chosen out of pity with the expectation of Impression looming so heavily on them. Gale instead inferred that she had seen enough lessons and done well enough that she didn’t need too much further teaching on the subject. If anything, all her years training as a Harper made her Candidacy seem a formality to her at times, and she found the separation from the ranks, even in this minor way, natural. She gave a shrug and slight grin of apology to Winderick and moved toward the table.

On the way she saw Kayadon and Tia. Kaydon, bah. They were both weyrbrats, but she found the younger boy’s nature simpering. She imagined, though, that Impression could probably straighten him out. And Tia? She was of an age with the girl and had heard untoward rumors about the girl since she’d been Searched, but she thought she’d be decent to know. Passing her as she slunk in, she gestured her toward her now vacant spot by Winderick and hoped she’d notice the quiet pointing. A’air would probably notice anyway, but maybe he wouldn’t trudge through to the back again to bother her.

At the table, Galeia gave Templath a humble sort of nod (even as a weyrbrat she rarely ever found herself so close to the beasts) and waited expectantly.

After delivering his greeting to Candidatemaster A'air, Winderick headed to the table and immedately took an interest in the tools laid out there. To his disappointment most of the tools were familiar. A few he had seen before but never had the oppertunity to work with until now. He started to reach for one when he remembered the dragon watching over him. Drawing back hesistantly, he bowed his head and greeted the blue, "Good morning, Templath. It's a pleasure to meet you."

He still needed to remind himself to greet dragons whenever he met them. From everything K'la told him on the day he was Searched, dragons should be treated like people. This was still a little weird to him. He would never greet a wher like this.

Tia did in fact note Galeia's subtle gesture and colored slightly, ducking her head as she moved to the indicated space. On someone her size, she imagined the blush looked like putting rogue on a runner, but she appreciated the gesture, and the out of the way seat.
