It wasn't very often candidates got a whole day to themselves, and Antigonos was making the most of this one. It was not too cold out in the Weyrbowl, and so the journeyman-turned-candidate lounged languidly outside, watching the dragons wheel overhead. A dragon in miniature lay curled up on his chest, but her red hide was not represented among the dragons above. That was fine by Antigonos mostly because, if he did Impress, he had no intention of Impressing a female dragon of any kind, let alone one of the oddballs they bred down south.

He had to admit to a great deal of curiosity about them, though, and had been trying to find an excuse to speak to one of the riders who had just returned from Trine. He understood that there had been a big mess about that red of their's being killed, but he didn't much care about that; it wasn't like it was his dragon, or a dragon he stood to gain from; dead or alive made no odds to him, though he supposed it did stir up interesting feelings in others. Outwardly, he expressed sorrow at her death of course; she might not be of a true and good colour but she hadn't deserved such a fate, especially with eggs on the sands...

Humm. Still. How to approach one of those riders who had lingered longest? He'd picked up bits and pieces about each of them through causal questions and careful eves-dropping, but he didn't know enough to make plans yet. Still, there was time, especially today; he could really give the problem a good thinking over... Not that he would let these musings get in the way of a more immediate opportunity should it arise of course; one always had to be on the look out for fleeting opportunities.

When Winderick wasn't day dreaming about the hatching, worrying over the flit eggs hidden in the empty room down the hall from the boys' barracks, or thinking about his uncle's smithy back in Benden Hold, his thoughts drifted back to the incident on the grassy slope with Gale. Watching dragons spin above the bowl, it was only a matter of time before his mind went off on its own. He looked down, breaking the trance, and kicked at a large pebble. Shards. He felt sick thinking about what happened, so why did it keep coming up?

As he started to walk around the bowl, hoping the exercise would put him in a better frame of mind, he noticed Antigonos sitting with a crimson flit on his stomach. The flit was beautiful. Antigonos wasn't bad looking himself, but Winderick had mixed feelings about him. He was a little put off by his brownoseing during the candidate lesson. On the other hand he didn't know much about Antigonos. He could be anybody.

Anyway, his current line of thought put him in a determinedly social mood. If he were to extract a lesson from the incident with Gale he supposed it ought to be Talk to People. Gale was his only friend here. If he had been with someone else at the time of the green's flight, a boy, maybe he wouldn't have so many regrets. Besides, he was tired of hiding. Like Gale said, Benden Weyr was not like Benden Hold. People here had a different standard of normal. He started toward Antigonos and stopped a couple feet away. "Hi. I saw you at the last lesson."

He sounded a little unsure of himself. He didn't normally walk up to people and start a conversation.

As the voice reached his ears, Antigonos turned his head to the side to regard the speaker. Ah, it was... Win-somebody. As a harper he was doing his best to learn everybody's name, but it was harder with the quieter ones. Still, this was a good chance to get to know Win-whoever; he didn't look like much, probably wouldn't Impress anything important but you never could tell, and if he himself failed to Impress then even a greenrider would be a useful friend to have.

"Hello there," he offered the younger candidate a smile and sat up, causing the red flitt who had been on his belly to squeak and clamber up onto his shoulder instead. "I spotted you there too, sorry I wasn't all that sociable; all of the things we're being taught are so new to me, I feel like I'm trying to win a footrace against a runnerbeast catching up with how much the folk who've been here longer know... Have you been a candidate long yourself? Oh, I'm Antigonos by the by, and the flitt is Symphony." Maybe the youth cared to know that, maybe not, but he hadn't looked at her with disgust so mentioning it was probably safe.
