It was a large watering hole that he and his parents and siblings had stopped at. After slaking his thirst, Ruu padded off to explore and see who he could meet. He was naturally social, and loved to meet new felines. He meandered past a nervous herd of gazelle, avoiding them and their sharp little hooves and sharp long horns. He wasn't a cubbie anymore, so his mother let him wander a little, so long as he was within hearing distance so he could hear her chirp when she was looking for him.

Though he meant to be looking for other felines, he got sidetracked by a rather large locust. It was zigzagging drunkenly around the greenery growing thickly near the water's edge, and Ruu began following it. He ducked below a thick branch, then circled a bush in order to keep following it. Suddenly it plunged for the water's surface and went plunk! right into the wet stuff. Startled, Ruu crept closer and peered down into the water's edge, dipping a paw in after the large bug.

Ulwazi stared into the wiggling face looking up at him from the murky blue. In all Ulwazi's short life, he had never seen water before. Until recently he got all the water he needed from his mother's milk. He dipped a blue paw into the water and gasped, bristling all over when the cheetah beneath the surface did the same and ripples spread across the lake. Curiosity overcame fear and Ulwazi crept back to the edge of the lank. He stared at the face, the face stared back. Ulwazi blinked. The other cub did, too. "Hey... are you me?" Ulwazi asked the cub in the water.

There were many sights and sounds to take in around the watering hole, yet this was surely the strangest of them all. Ulwazi touched the face again (he braced himself this time so he wouldn't flinch) and watched the image distort. He did it again and again. Each time the water rippled he watched his reflection with greater intrigue than before. He never smiled, for he was concentrating hard. "How does it work?"

Suddenly a near by bush rustled loudly and something plunked into the water. Ulwazi looked up in time to see a white cheetah cup creeping toward the water. When he saw the cub dipping his paw in the water he jogged over to the stranger with his tail in the air and said, "Hey, it's okay! The water cheetah isn't gonna bite you, cause he is you, I-I think." It didn't occur to Ulwazi that the white cub was older than him and already knew how water worked.

Ruu looked up at the voice and approach, and his eyes lit with joy. Another cub! His tail did a winding circle of gladness, and he turned to face the otehr cheetah in a playful crouch, tail waving. But... what was he talking about? "Water cheetah?" he asked blankly, sitting up a bit in thought. He looked from the cub to the water and back again, trying to think what had triggered this odd statment. But then the words clicked, and he peered over the water's edge at his wavering reflection.

"Oh! The water cheetah!" he exclaimed then, getting excited again. "He and I play all the time. "I like making him make weird faces. Watch!" With that he pulled a commical expression, eyes bulging and tongue sticking out. "And then I make him go all weird!" With that, he slapped the water sharply, sending his reflection into shards of flying water and distorted lines. He grinned at his companion. "Yup, the water cheetah is lotsa fun."

He did a sudden barrel roll away from the water's edge, ending up on his back, waving his paws in the air. "My name's Ruu. What's yours?" He smiled upside down at his new friend and lightly swatted at him, twisting his body in contortions that got him nowhere.

Infected by Ruu's exuberance Ulwazi grinned and stuck his tongue out at the water cheetah, giggling when Ruu made the face disappear with a splash. He winced as some of the water hit him in the face, still grinning. He felt as though he and Ruu were already becoming best friends. Of course Ulwazi was too young to have many friends.

Ulwazi bounced over to Ruu and wound up somersaulting right over him. It was a clumsy maneuver, completely unintentional, and it landed him right on his face before the rest of his body rolled over and he found himself lying belly up at a right angle to Ruu. His tail whipped the sand in a flurry as he rolled onto his side. "My name's Ulwazi but you can call me Wazi! That's what my brother and sister call me!"

He broke into a squeal of laughter as his new friend catapulted across him to collapse into a similar position as his intentional one. He waved all four paws in the air in glee, curving his spine towards the younger cheetah, though he remained on his back. He was good at such contortions and making them work how he wanted.

"Hi Wazi!" he squeaked in pleased reply. "That's an awesome name to say. Waziiiii!" He crowed the name, holding the last syllable in a descending trail of notes. "Very fun to say. I'm Ruushan, but my mommy calls me Ruu. So do the rest of my family," he announced proudly. He loved his own name. It was nice and simple and was equally crowable. "Ruuuuuu!" he half-howled, though not at any loudness. He just liked the sound of it.

He rolled to a reclined sprawl and grinned. "How many brothers and sisters do you have?" he asked brightly. "I have lots. 1 brotehr and 3 sisters!" He was very fond of his family, and it showed in his tone. In fact, they rarely had a spat between them, or at least to Ruu's point of view. He did tend to prefer to be the center of attention, though, so his perspective was probably off a little. Regardless, he loved them all dearly.

“Ruuuuuuu!” Wazi crowed with him, his croon descending into wild giggles. He couldn’t help himself! This boy was so funny!

“I’ve got one brother, one sister and one mama.” He was also proud of his family. They were all Wazi ever knew and he assumed they had to be just the greatest in the world. He hadn’t figured out yet that someone was missing from his family group. He didn’t have a father, didn’t even know there was such a thing as fathers. For all he knew his mother had wished him and his siblings into life on a star.

Ruu didn't want to mention parents, for fear mere mention would bring them into being and stop all the fun. So he bypassed the topic entirely. He stood up and shook his pelt all over, dislodging dust from his roll. Quick-like, he groomed his shoulder and along his back, twisting impressively to try and reach all parts he could. It took a lot of work to keep this white fur white! Instinctively he knew he wouldn't be nearly so cute if his white fur was beige or worse, brown. Nope, his fur needed to stay sparkly white.

He was saved from any further invention of randomness to distract from the dreaded 'p' word by another fat insect buzzing by. It bobbled in the air and wavered like a dizzy cub. He'd never seen anything quite like it, and was frankly curious. "Lookit this!" he called to his friend, pitching his voice in a mock-whisper that would have fooled noone. "Lookit! Think you can move like that?" He turned from the fuzzy flying thing to his new friend expectnatly.

The dust got in Wazi's face and bothered his eyes. It didn't hurt, but it was quite irritating. He rolled onto his stomach and pawed at his eyes. At first this didn't do any good. The sand only seemed to go deeper. Next he tried licking his paw first. The wet fur seemed to do the trick. He managed to get the sand out of his eyes just in time to see the insect buzzing over head. Wazi's jaw dropped.

"What is that?" he asked quietly. Ruu didn't seem to hear him. He looked to his new friend and back to the insect and shook his head a little sadly. "No. I can't fly."

Ruu gave a squeak of a laugh. "Not the flying part, silly!" It clearly amused him greatly that his new friend had really thought he had asked if he could fly. "I mean like this!" He surged to his paws and promptly began trying to swagger and stumble about in what he thought resembled the bee's path. He even was on his tippypaws and then nearly scraping his belly on the ground sometimes. It didn't last long, however, for soon his over-large paws tripped him up in the middle of a a tricky stumble and he fell flat.

"Or... something like that," he mumbled dizzily. It wasn't easy trying to mimick the insect! He blinked rapidly to try to clear the rolling world from his sight. How did the bug manage it without falling over? Could one even fall over if one was flying? He sat up unsteadily and squinted about for the bee, his eyes still not quite looking where he pointed them.

Wazi laughed so hard his sides started to hurt. He grabbed his sides but that made him lose his balance and fall over on his back, which only made him laugh more. When he finally recovered he rolled over onto his belly and tried desperately to catch his breath.

He sprung to his feet and started to bounce and spin around. Before he knew what he was doing he hopped onto his hind legs, spinning and bouncing and throwing his forelegs out for balance until he fell onto his back again, giggling and panting.

By the time Wazi was up and doing his impression of the bumbling bug, Ruu could see straight again. He watched his new friend bobbing and twirling and broke into giggles as well. The younger cheetah's laughter was infectious, and by the time Wazi hit the ground, Ruu was helpless in paroxysms of giggles himself.

When he was able to breath again, he leapt up and pounced the other cub playfully, growling in the high-pitched yowl that indicated playing and not a bad temper. He tussled gamely, taking care not to hurt the smaller feline, but not exactly being gentle either. He clicked his teeth together trying to reach one of Wazi's green ears, and had to settle for nipping at his shoulder instead.

Time fell apart in a whirl of dust and laughter. Perhaps it was an instant, perhaps it was an eternity, but sooner or later Ulwazi heard his mother's call. He stopped for a second, smile fading away as his ears swiveled to meet the sound of his mother's voice. Dinner time!

Ulwazi turned to Ruu with a slightly apologetic smile. "I've got to run now, mom wants me for dinner. We can play again later, right?"

Sadly enough, Ruu wasn't sure if his family would stay very long. They rarely did, usually moving on swiftly. They were cheetahs, after all. Wasn't traveling quickly what cheetahs did? His ears, whiskers, and tail all drooped, communicating his regret. "I dunno. We might go in the morning. But maybe?" He rose to his paws to head towards is own mother. Come to think of it, he was hungry too.

But as he began to bound away, he paused and turned to look back at his new friend. "But I'll see you again sometime. I promise. I'll come find you, and we'll play again, just like we did today." It was an impulsive but whole-hearted vow. If it was within his power, he would indeed find his momentary friend again, even if it meant they didn't see each other until they both were long grown into adults. "Bye!" With a last wave of his tail, he turned and scurried with the astounding speed their species was known for. His tummy was grumbling, and he wanted to eat! In moments he was out of sight of his playmate.

At first Ulwazi's ears sank. He nodded through, smiling. "Okay. I'll wake up early and see you tomorrow."

He might have to convince his mom to wake him up. That shouldn't be hard. She would probably be thrilled to know he made a friend. Since they might not see each other again for a long time, waking up early to meet Ruu again was important. Before he turned to go, he called, "I promise, too! I'm so smart it will be easy to find you again! Bye for now!"

And with that he bounded home.
