He was awake, like always, bright and early. Mother had fed him and sent him to play with the rest of his litter while she slept in a bit later. Dad was probably already gone doing who knew what! But, that's what he wanted to find out. The brownish gray male was stalking around the whole pride, trying to find his father. He wanted to talk to him, to know what job he did, and what job he, himself, had to do. Zu knew he was a Pesar, he knew what would make him a Pad, but he hadn't the slightest clue on what came after that. He wanted to know how to capture a female, he wanted to know if he had to hunt, or the Banu did it for him. Heck, he wanted his dad to chose his Banu!Zuberi didn't have many thoughts of his own.
Blue eyes glanced this way and that as he approached the pride's edge. "Did he go this way?" A frown appeared on his face as he headed toward the Roguelands. Who knew?

Vu's nose twitched, his ears swiveled. He spun around, heart pounding in his chest, and ran toward the smell carried to him by the wind. "Zuberi!" he shouted when the dark blotch of fur came into view.
He jogged up to Zuberi and stopped in front of him, white mane falling into his eyes as he panted. He didn't know who he should be more angry with, Zuberi for coming all the way out here or his banu for not keeping an eye on his adventurous son. Vu still bore the scars from his misadventure in the rogue lands. The thought that his son might meet the same fate or worse made him shake with rage. Fortunately for Zuberi, his father's anger was tempered by relief. Thank the gods he found Zuberi in time.
"What are you doing out here?" he demanded, giving his son a stern glare. "You know better than to wander away from the den like this. It's not safe out here, Zuberi."

His tail flicked as he heard his father's voice and then shifted to see his father racing towards him. Oh, crap! He'd done something wrong again! His ears finally folded against his head as he swallowed thickly. Well, it wasn't like he'd hurt anything! So, he put his eyes as defiant and gave a sheepish grin. "Ahm.. See, I wanted to find you... And I didn't know where you were.. So I kind of just felt like you were here? Out there, actually," he said, motioning to the Roguelands.
He couldn't go out there? That made him want to do it even more! He kept that to himself. "Momma Fila said we could go play. And everyone else was busy, so I wanted to come find you and see what ....what you ...were up too?" Well, he didn't know what else to say right now. It was clear his father was worried and furious at the same time. Maybe he could convince his father not to be mad at his mommas. It wasn't really their fault he wandered this far. "....Hi?"

So Fila was the one who said he could go play. Vu dropped a sigh. "So you would have wandered into the rogue lands just to look for me? Do you have any idea what could have happened to you?"
Having a son like Zuberi almost made him miss the days when most of his cubs were female. Even though Zarha tested his boundaries, she eventually learned to listen to him. Maybe Zuberi would learn to listen as he got older, too. He sat down in front of his son. "The next time you want to see me, ask one of your sisters to accompany you. It's dangerous for you to wander around the boarders alone. Do you understand?"

The boy snorted and nodded. That just wasn't right! He was old enough, and big enough, to cross the borders! At least, in his own opinion he was. He was all muscle! Nevermind all the baby fat that was there on him. It wasn't his fault that food was so delicious, was it? Zuberi then gave a sigh and glanced up at his father.
"Anyway. I wanted to know about... being a Pesar, and a Pad... And what it all means. I mean... why do we need more Banu than one? I'm happy for Momma Fila, but, why her and Momma?" Oh, the questions of a little boy. He wasn't interested in any Banu right now. He thought they were all weird like his sisters were. Especially Afsar. Despite their bond, he thought his oldest sister was so weird! All love struck over some Pad who'd yet to come back to her. "And why doesn't Momma talk a lot? She always been that way?"

He never was much good at disciplining his cubs. If his father was here he would have chided Zuberi profusely and sent him back to his mother in tears. Maybe Vu feared becoming like him. He looked around. The other guards were no where in side. Vu needed to finish his patrol. He stood and gave Zuberi a look that tried to say he wasn't happy about this. "Walk with me. After I finish my patrol we're going back to the den."
They started to walk along the boarder. Vu kept Zuberi on his left side, the side of Ukuucha'Wafalme, and the rogue lands on his right. "Being a Pad means that you are a male. As a male, it will be your job to protect your pride, your family and your banu when you grow-up. Males are better suited to protection because we're larger and stronger than females. As a Pesar, you should spend your time learning to fight and care for your family. You should also try to make alliances with other males your age. When you grow up and have daughters of your own you'll need to find pads for them. It's good to have friends."

Zuberi listened to his father's explanations and he nodded a bit more, frowning. He didn't want to have daughters. He was in the phase all boys went through when girls had cooties. Even his sisters did! But he could make friends with a few guys. Maybe go out with them when he got older like daddy did with some of his friends.
He 'hmed' and rolled his eyes up in thought. "Dad, what about those pink cubs that are running around? Could I make friends with them? They're.. Pad Tariq's I think." Though, he knew they looked nothing like their father. Zu didn't think he looked like his family, so he couldn't compare looks without being a hypocrite.

Vu gazed out over the rogue lands, frowning. Harb, his first son, had yet to return. He never mentioned Harb to his younger cubs, though Mollie and Zarha talked about him sometimes. Even though they rarely got along as cubs even she seemed to miss him. Would Zubari disappear, too? He glanced at his son, but his thoughts were distracted.
"Pink cubs..." he muttered, trying to concentrate. He did not want to linger on depressing thoughts. Suddenly it came to him. "Oh, those cubs... I don't know, Zuberi. Their mother wasn't a very good banu. She was exiled, I think." He paused. "Actually, I'm not sure what happened to her."
He didn't want to be too judgmental. All he knew was what he heard from other pads. Few of them had anything good to say. "You're welcome to play with Kame's cubs," he added hastily, changing the subject.

Dad didn't answer his question. Frowning a little more, the off grey cub huffed and walked off ahead a ways before coming back and looking his dad square in the eye. Zu didn't like it when his dad didn't answer his questions. He was a very inquisitive, if not pushy, cub. Maybe he could push his father into answering. "I don't want to be Kame's cubs' friends. I... wanted one of the... pink ones in my harem when I get older... If they're not all taken by Pad's when I'm big!" He puffed out his little chest and then frowned.
What was so great about Kame anyway? He was over a lot. He heard his dad talking about him a lot. Dad should talk about mom or Banu Fila. Not some guy. Clearly Zu didn't have any guy friends, or friends in general for that matter.
"...sorry. I didn't... mean to sound... rude." It wasn't entirely true, but he didn't want his dad to think of him as a bad person.

Faintly surprised by his son’s assertiveness, Vu stopped and looked at him directly. The ghost of Harb still hovered over his thoughts but for the first time since he found Zuberi wandering near the border he seemed to be listening. Vu didn’t seem angry. In fact he felt happy to see his son standing up for himself, an important quality for any lion, yet the subject of the pink cubs made him wary. “Well, Zuberi, if you really want one of those pink girls it’s up to you, but there are a lot of pads who think they’re bad luck. They certainly are pretty but remember that what their mother did was not right. Imagine if every female – your moms, your sisters, everyone – went out and had cubs with strange rouges behind their pad’s back. Think of what a mess our pride would be then. Nobody would really know the father of their cubs and none of us would ever get to have cubs of our own. We have to have rules. Do you see what I mean?”

"Just 'cause their momma did something bad doesn't make them dirty! What if momma did something bad. Does that make me dirty? Or you, by association?" He puffed up his chest again and then frowned. Something about that did not sit right in his mind. Huffing, he walked away again and then back and then away and then back pacing. "Like.... 'f it was momma in that position, would you not let me have a Banu 'cause momma did something wrong?"

How strange it was to be a father. Even now that he was raising his second litter he was still amazed by how quickly his cubs formed thoughts and opinions of their own. He sat down, ears focused on his son. “Of course not – I never said that I would,” he said quietly. “You’re free to choose whichever banu you want, I just want….” What? Come to think of it, he wasn’t sure where his opinion of those pink cubs came from. He heard other pads saying bad things about them and worried that if his family played with them they would say bad things about him too. Was that wrong? He continued, trying to think his words through more carefully, “I just don’t want you to be upset. Sometimes when people talk about you a certain way you start acting like it’s true. Maybe those other pads are wrong but, honestly, I don’t know. You should try talking to Anwar when he gets back from his quest. He knows those cubs better than I do.”

He huffed a bit and then sat down, hunched over. He might be a cub, but Zuberi could figure out right from wrong. Basing opinions of a family from a mother they never knew was wrong. But his father relented a bit and it pleased the cub and soothed over his ruffled feathers. His expression softened and he gave a nod. "OK. I wanna be there when you talk to Pad Anwar, too!" His blue eyes looked about before realizing he forgot the whole entire reason he came out here to talk to his dad. Well, it didn't matter now did it? Bah, whatever. ".....Can you come to the den now?"

Vu paused to glance out over the rouge lands. A soft wind blew over the dusty earth, rustling the branches of distant trees. He turned back to Zuberi with a faint smile and nodded, standing. “Alright. Your mother is probably wondering where you ran off to.” They were so much alike, the two of them. Sometimes it frightened him. Like most fathers his greatest wish was to offer his children an easier life than the one he lived.

Zuberi flicked his tail and nodded. Getting up, the boy shook himself off and padded striaght for home with no dilly dallying or play. He had a lot to think about now, and he wasn't sure how he felt about certain aspects of the conversation he just had for his father. Still, he had to get over it and not be so serious when he got to the den. He didnt' want his mother asking so many quesitons.
