Golden lights danced across the waves like fireflies on a blue ocean of night. The young lion sitting on the shore watched the lights dance, his head bobbing and rolling with the motion of the waves while his body remained mostly still except for an occasional jerk, for he was so transfixed by the glowing, singing lights that he occasionally lost his balance. Tears gathered in his grey eyes as he watched the lights dance. Their golden light slashed his eyes like claws, yet he could not bring himself to look away from the light cast upon the waves by the setting sun, for it was singing to him.

He strained his ears to hear their words, which were as soft as the dawning light light on a gloomy morning (although it was now dusk and the light was intense). He blinked away the painful tears, shaking his head, then shifted his weight and looked again. No one ever told him it was bad to look at the sun. In fact he never felt the urge to look at the sun before up until the light started singing to him.

Chewa had only been in the pride for a short while, but he was already getting used to his new surroundings. The lions here were much friendlier than those in Thona's lands. They were always speaking to him about the muses, the spirits that made up the living world around them. Even though they spoke constantly about muses, Chewa did not immediately realize what he was hearing. His memory was quite poor. Besides, he was too focused on trying to figure out what the light was saying to analyze its source.

Jura didn't do too well in the darkening light. It wasn't that she had poor eye sight, but the trees were silent around this time of day...night...whatever it was. Sleeping with the birds that roosted in their branches. Ugh, birds, Jura was constantly jealous of them. Always taking the trees away from her. Normally she slept early, and awoke early, but this evening she was restless. Time to walk off some nerves before attempting to sleep again.

She let her paws wander aimlessly, as there were no areas of the pride to ignore. Except...maybe Rai, but as her shadow was nearly non-existant in the dimming light, even he couldn't rant about her shadow would get him. Natsuki was probably busy as well....bored. She wandered to the shore line, wondering if anything large had washed up when...hm, there's a lion there. Not wet, but still, she had to investigate.

As the crown of the sun decended beyond the sea the lights on the surface faded slowly, the chorus of their voices listing into obscurity. Chewa jumped to his feet, mouth agape. He leapt into the waves as if to catch the last reflections of sunlight in his paws, but when the water climbed over his belly he panicked, having never learned how to swim, and loped back to the shallows. Shaking himself furiously, he turned to the horizon and pleaded to the light, "W-wait! Please come back!"

Fragments of light still danced in his vision. He had been staring at the sun for so long that whenever he blinked or closed his eyes he could see the silhouette of it on the inside of his lids, shining yellow and blue, but these residual lights were not true sunbeams. They did not sing to him.

Chewa paced back and fourth through the shallows as the last traces of sunlight faded away to darkness. This was the first time sunlight ever sang to him. He didn't know if he would hear it again. Oh, he could hardly bare the thought of that!

Jura's ears swiveled forward and back, wondering what the outburst was for. Lost love? Hmm...nah. As she got closer to him, she didn't recognize him. At least, what markings she could make out in the dying light. She squinted, and when she reached him she had to stifle a laugh. Ooook, there was no one there. Something...invisible had upset him, perhaps?

"What, did a wave take away your meal?" she asked, the only thing she could think of. The waves could be relentless if you weren't careful enough, and once they had their watery claws in something, it was long gone. "Might as well go look for another one, if so. It's gone." Especially food, yuck. The salty water didn't do any favors to a nice, fresh meal.

Chewa whirled around and shook his head frantically. "No, no, no! The light! It sang to me!"

Even before Chewa came to the pride he was considered insane. He had his mother's mood swings and a poor memory, although his memory was in many ways better than his mother, who sometimes forgot she even had a son, and his thoughts were often scattered. But even he never heard voices before. Sometimes he felt as though someone was watching him, a shadowy figure who always vanished the moment he tried to seek it out, but nothing ever sang to him like the sunlight glinting off the sea.

"The light?" She narrowed her eyes, looking out at the dark waters of the ocean. So, the sun? But if that was his muse, and if he kept staring at it...he'd probably make himself blind one day.

"The sun is your muse?" she guessed. She wasn't the best at guessing these things. "Don't worry too much, it'll come back in the morning." It wouldn't be rising on the ocean, but it'd still be back. Why cry about it? She only got angry when the trees ignored her, and even then her anger was only towards the birds. They liked to talk to birds over her, and jealousy was common for her.

"Muse?" Chewa tilted his head. His mouth made an 'O' and he jumped excitedly. "Oh! Muse."

He remembered the muses! Sort of. The pride talked about them a lot. They were special. In fact they were so special that some lions did nothing but sit around and talk to their muse all day long. "I'm supposed to... to talk to muse... 'cause I'm bad at hunting." He smiled bashfully. He was bad at talking, too. "I'm Chewa."

Jura shrugged, but as she had been born and raised here, it all seemed right to her. Nothing strange, like an outsider might, but she had conversed with enough of those to understand how strange it might seem for them. Weirdos.

"Yeah. I mean, the trees don't sing to me, they just talk, but you can only hear that from your muse," she said, twitching her tail as she attempted to clarify the whole deal. She didn't know how much he knew, since he did seem a little confused...

"Though I know that grass sings to one, to Natsuki." Jura always dropped names, even if the other didn't know them. She never thought it'd need clarifying. "Heck, Rai is scared of some shadows, and that must be his muse," she smirked. She liked tormenting him, as it was fun.

Chewa nodded, his head bobbing up and down as she spoke. She liked to talk a lot. There was so much to take in - talking trees and grass and shadows. The names she mentioned went out of his head almost instantly. Chewa could do well with names, but only if the information was given to him slowly. This was a bit too much.

After a moment Chewa blinked. Something about singing... and other lions... it was all coming apart now. He titled his head at the lioness and smiled. "What's your name?"

Jura blinked. Oooookay. So they were changing subjects so soon? Her previous evaluation that he was weird was sticking amazingly well. Kind of annoying, actually. Oh well. It was so painful always being right~ not. She snickered to herself, quickly letting the giggles pass since she needed to respond to his question, and it wouldn't be good if she sat here and laughed at him instead of being somewhat kind. Somewhat being the key word. Jura wasn't always terribly kind. Just blunt.

"I'm Jura," she replied with a nod. "And yours?"

"Chewa." He smiled back obliviously, sharing in her laughter. He broke eye contact for a moment, eyes moving slowly back and fourth over the sand as he mouthed her name to himself. Jura, Jura, Jura. He wanted to remember her name, even if he couldn't remember anything else she said.

He looked up at her again, still smiling. "Jura talks to trees and Chewa talks to sun. I'll go to sleep now so I can see the sun again in the morning."

Chewa looked around. He bounded up to a patch of grass growing near the beach and settled in on top of it, crushing it under his weight. Those stalks that didn't fall Chewa grabbed in his mouth and snapped, almost making a game out of it. The prospect of finding his own muse was quite exciting. Even though he wanted to sleep so that he would see the sun sooner he would probably be too excited to rest for a couple of hours. He looked up to Jura and smiled again. "Nice meeting you... Jura!"

She drew a paw to her chest, really....just confused. Jura liked to play games, and tease others, but this one just seemed...different. And unable to tease in a way. How disappointing!

"Yeah, ok," she replied with a short nod. It was getting late, though she still didn't feel tired. Glancing around for a moment, she decided to keep walking along the water's edge, careful to be mindful of the tide. Hopefully she would feel tired enough soon, but that strange pink maned lion had her a little befuddled.
