Ate had, for the past day and a half or so, had been entirely avoiding Conundrum. She'd given in and helped Xiaoshi with the BCRs, as it /was/ her job, but at the same time, she'd been carefully skirting around Conundrum so that she wouldn't have to look at him and deal with the feelings that were roiling about in her head and chest.
She'd settled for flopping onto her side after a restless night, a spot where the green broke - just for a moment - into a sandy, sunny spot. She sunned there, her eyes closed, resting on her side. Her breathing was deep in her half-sleep, but was mostly utilizing her diaphragm, and so her chest was moving, but shallowly.
In fact, if she'd been able to see herself, she could see how it could look like, at first, she was not breathing at all - but she couldn't, and so wasn't aware of how she looked.
Instead, she was just thinking to herself - she liked Conundrum. She had for awhile, and she didn't really see a problem with that. But he had kids. So that meant ... he had someone else? Or was it a fling? Either way - he obviously didn't feel the same way about her as she did about him, or there wouldn't be such young BCRs lying around. Right? Of course. Children didn't just - appear. They had to be conceived and born - which was, to be frank, an incredibly depressing thought to her. How couldn't it be? She loved him and he loved - someone else. God, she didn't even know who the hell it was, not that it was any of her business. But really, who was it? It didn't look like anyone in the tribe, that was for certain, but ... who was it? Who was it that had stolen his heart the way /she'd/ wanted to, at least briefly entertained that she might one day accomplish said feat, who was it that was better than her, that was more deserving?
There was a faint sigh as she forced the thoughts from her mind, slipping into a deeper sleep as the sun warmed her joints completely. No sense worrying about it, it could never change anything, after all...

Conundrum didn't understand why Ate had been avoiding him, but he had given her her space all the same--he wouldn't force himself on her, wouldn't bother her when she so clearly did not wish to be in his presence.
But he finally couldn't help it. It was a quiet time in the Tribe, the hottest part of the day, most everyone was asleep, like her, but he had finally decided that it was time to stop being polite and ask what he had done to make her so mad.
On his way over to her, he realized that he probably knew. For some reason, she...resented? the--his--BCRs. Conundrum could only wish it was why he thought it was, but maybe she just felt she wasn't ready to do her job or...something.
Sighing softly, Conundrum approached the sunny spot and sat down, clearing his throat. "Ate?"

Ate rolled over obstinately at the sound of Conundrum's voice - not because she knew it was him and was purposefully trying to ignore him, but simply thought it was a figment of her overheated brain.
There was a short pause in which she realised she was never going to get back to sleep, and decided to sit up instead. Ate stretched as hard as she could, turning around slowly - and was more than a little surprised to see Conundrum there.
"Oh... Hi Conundrum... Sorry, I - I thought I was just imagining it.." She gave a sheepish look and then twisted a bit, popping a few more of her joints into working. "Did you need something?"
She gave an innocent smile, as though she hadn't been avoiding him at all.
If she'd known that Conundrum, however, thought she resented the BCRs... She would have, actually, been angry - the children hadn't done anything wrong, and she loved them already - she just wasn't too happy with their /father/.

((Unlocking, this could be one of our RPs if we want to try to breed them~ heart ))
Conundrum resisted the urge to roll his eyes--of course she thought she was imagining it, right. Sighing some as he brought his mind back to the present, he nodded as he looked at her.
"Yes, I do. I need you to..." his voice faltered slightly, but he made himself keep talking--he hadn't been expecting that she would talk to him: he hadn't gotten that far in his plannings.
"I need you to please tell me what I did to make you so angry with me, so I can explain and apologize and try to make everything...make everything between...between us okay again," Conny looked down, his ears drooping, as he absently pawed a beetle away from him. He sounded completely pathetic, completely un-Elder-ish, but also completely puzzled and sincere. He hoped.

Ate looked at him. He needed her to talk. To find out what was wrong. What, really, wasn't wrong? Did he think she was alright with it? And 'between us'? What 'between us'? Conny had made it obnoxiously, abundantly clear that there was nothing between them but what was proper a tribe elder and a carer. And that was damn fine with her. In theory. In actuality, it made her want to tear up and give up, to lash angrily out at him and make him feel her hurt in some way. But she didn't. She couldn't, really.
"There's nothing wrong, Conundrum. I promise." She smiled at him, her tail lazily flicking back and forth. So... What now?
Lying wasn't getting her anywhere, she decided, so... She stood up and turned away from him, pointedly keeping her face where he couldn't see it. She wouldn't let him see how upset she was. Never.
"I was just wondering where the BCRs came from and why you didn't bring their other parent back. That's the least you could do for them, have both parents. Or explain to the tribe where they came from." She rolled her shoulders. "It may not be any of our business. ..." There was a short pause in which she decided to throw just a little more caution to the wind. "We just all care about you, Conundrum. Maybe I'm nosy about it, but I care too."
