Well, I figured it's time that there was some kind of light discussion here, maybe get things a little active again (hopefully). So I thought I'd start off with a light discussion topic.

I know that not everyone likes Japanese anime, but for those who do, what is your favorite? Why do you like it so much?

Discuss! surprised

For me, I have to be honest, it's hard to pick a top favorite. There are a few I absolutely love... Namely "Mobile Suit Gundam", "∀Gundam", "Kaleido Star" and "Kyo Kara Maoh!" to name a few. Though I suppose I speak more of Gundam so perhaps I'll go with that for the time being.

There are lots of different Gundam series out there but my all-time favorite Gundam is the classic "Mobile Suit Gundam". It showed the dark side of war and how it affected those who really wanted no part of it, mainly civilians. In MSG there were no true "good guys" and no real "bad guys", each side had their own good points and bad points.
For example, while the Earth Federation was clearly marked as the "good guys" in the series, they did lots of dirty, underhanded things. Not to mention that the Federation high-command were extremely corrupted and valued money and fame over human life. Add to the fact that, a few years later, they would create a mobile suit that completely broke their own anti-biological weapon treaty and equipped it with a nuclear weapon.
On the other hand, the Principality of Zeon, while obviously the "bad guys" were fighting for their freedom and independence after years of being neglected by the Federation, who at the time controlled most of space. Granted the Zeon had their own share of corrupted leaders, too...

Anyhow, I felt that MSG had a deep story, a story that really drew me in and got me hooked. There's been nothing quite like it since.

Though for another superb series, "Turn A Gundam" (∀Gundam) was excellent.

I could never have a favourite of anything, simply because it's all too hard for me to choose. I haven't seen a lot of anime but I guess I have a few favourites off the top of my head.

Ouran High School Host Club is, at the moment, my most favourite because it is. It's just flat out amazing in my opinion. It gives off a very interesting appeal to "rich people" and "commoners." It's quite comical, a touch romantic and just silly. I donno, I'm bad at explaining things >.<;; It's just awesome

Fruits Basket was another one I like. It was... uhm.. *brain dead* I just liked it. If I think of a good explanation I'll come back and edit.

D.N. Angel was one I enjoyed because it was kind of relate-able to stereotypical teenage life. The way Daisuke was already worried about school and this girl he liked, and now he has to worry about being the "phantom thief" on top of that. I donno I liked it. I also liked the "hints" of Hiwatari having gay feelings for Daisuke, even if he doesn't the hints were quite amusing.

FLCL has to be one of my top favourites. The most weirdest amaizngest funnyest yet awesomest and shortest animes EVER. 6 episodes and 2 mangas of pure not knowing what the heck is going on why, and loving it.

Rurouni Kenshin, Afro Samurai, Air, Loveless, Pitaten, Princess Princess, Trinity Blood, Eureka 7, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Gundam ((though I very sadly have seen very little of it)), Strawberry Panic, Magical Nurse Witch Komugi, ect.

Ugh Grr I keep thinking of so many that I could put here but I don't wanna sit here for hours typing about anime as much fun as it sounds XD

I like just about anything and everything, so there

Heh heh, I've seen and played pretty much everything there is Gundam. Even lots of stuff that wasn't released in the US. I'm a sucker for it. xd

Trinity Blood was a pretty darn good series. And so was Ouran High School Host Club, that series was hilarious. Gotta love Magical Nurse Witch Komugi, too. razz

Some other good ones worth mentioning are...
-Steel Angel Kurumi
-Saber Marionette J
-Kyo Kara Maoh!
-Bleach
-Gankutusuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (it's friggin' epic)
-Mobile Suit Gundam 00
-The Galaxy Railways (awesome, pure awesome)
-Hakugei: Legend of the Moby d**k
-I, My, Me, Strawberry
-Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
-Bamboo Blade (hilarious)
-Excel Saga
-Sakura Wars TV (a must-see for any anime fan)
-Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
-All Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku OVA (TV and Dash just aren't quite as good)
-Kanon (awesome series but terribly depressing)
-Kaleido Star (girly perhaps, but it's one of my favorites. There's nothing else quite like this series)
-xxxHolic
-Planetes
-Monster Rancher/Monster Farm (c'mon, it's a classic!)

And lots of others. I should go downstairs and look through my anime library.
Heh, that would be an interesting meet-up sometime... Everyone brings some anime to watch and we just watch them. xd

xxxHolic is a good one too.
I recently finished Fullmetal Alchemist (both animes) and let me tell you... IT IS FANTASIC. XD
Fruits Basket and Samurai Champloo should be on your watch list. Seriously.
Cardcaptor Sakura is my ALL TIME FAVORITE ANIME.
Its for a girls though. =P
But it's still awesome.
Anything Clamp made is generally awesome.

WALL 'O' TEXT

I haven't seen much anime, sadly. I've seen a little bit of several. But I haven't seen all of hardly anything. I've read more manga than anime and I haven't read that much manga. I remember watching the original Gundam when I was a lot younger, but I barely remember anything. There was one that was like Wing Zero or something or just Zero and then it got wings? And one with a scythe. And one of the pilots got amnesia at one point and it sucked or something. D: Also I saw all of G Gundam, which is pretty different from the rest I think. So was SD Gundam. All the funny little chibi gundam people running around. So silly! I've seen Ouran Host Club, fricking love it. I know some about Fruits Basket, never seen it though. Read some of D.N.Angel, but never saw the anime. FLCL is...undescribable really. Crazy, mind-blowing. I saw some of it when I was staying up till like 2 or 3 in the morning so it REALLY f**ked with me. <---One word: Eyebrows. Rurouni Kenshin is one I've seen a lot of. I love it...I saw Samurai X: Trust and Betrayayl. The ending was...well I don't like thinking about it. So full of despair. Never saw Afro Samurai, sadly. It's awesome. I saw a little of Eureka 7 but I don't remember it. Flying robot things with flashy glowy green stuff? Read all of Death Note, never saw the anime. Didn't read or see much FMA. Read all of Bleach, didn't like all the filler in the anime. Saw Sailor Moon as a kid, loved it. Tuxedo Mask makes me squee! Durarara is one I saw an episode or two of, it was strange but good. Also Hell Girl. Um...Shiguraki, was it? The one with the guy going to the small town and it has a series of "chapters" and people die and it's really creepy and strange. A strange like, French Anime I saw, Code Lyoko. I like that show. Uhm...oh yeah, read most of the manga of and want to see the anime of Eyeshield 21. I saw this weird and super silly anime called uhm, My bride is a mermaid. So funny. I like Naruto. Yeah, that's right I'm a burgeoning Narutard. There's so many more that I've looked at but- oh! InuYasha! And last but not least, Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT and Dragonball Kai, which is basically DBZ without a bunch of filler. I've only watched it in Japanese because the changed some of the voices in the English version and I hate that. So yeah, there's more but I forget. Anyway, I looovvveee anime. I think a meet-up to watch a ton of anime would be awesome. Gah! One last thing. Sort of a live-action pseudo anime I saw. It had a name like Devilman but it wasn't the Devilman anime. It was something else. Really strange. Anyway, ribbit!

Magic Panda of the West

xxxHolic is a good one too.

Cardcaptor Sakura is my ALL TIME FAVORITE ANIME.

I forgot about xxxHolic. That was a great series, too.

I used to watch a bit of Cardcaptor Sakura when I was younger. It may be for girls, but I watched it anyway. 'Course, I watched even more of Sailor Moon... watched tons of it... xd

You made me feel the need to update my list above... >>;;

The first one you mentioned is "Mobile Report Gundam Wing". It actually isn't the original Gundam series, the original was simply called "Mobile Suit Gundam", written by Yoshiyuki Tomino and released in Japan in 1979. Gundam Wing was a series taking placing in an alternate timeline and released in Japan in 1995.
Yes, I'm a total Gundam geek. razz

The two mobile suits you mentioned are the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam or possibly the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero. The other is the XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe or the XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell. There was also the Gundam Heavyarms, Altron Gundam, and Gundam Sandrock.
There was also a movie called "Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz" that had the Wing Gundam Zero and Gundam Deathscythe Hell with a different appearance. The other Gundam suits did, too.

And yeah, G-Gundam was awesome. I loved all the wacky designs in that series, and the story was actually pretty good, too.

My Bride is a Mermaid is a pretty funny series from what I've seen of it, though I've only seen the first episode. It's currently On Demand on Comcast. wink

On another note I just read that Bandai announced a US release of ∀Gundam (Turn A Gundam). Friggin' epic! I've been hoping for a US release for years. I watched the Japanese version, but I've been wanting a US release, too! ><;;
