I must admit, while I am a Christian writer I do put quite a bit of violence in my work, depending on the story, and there are characters of mine who curse.
Do you feel that it is wrong to put violence and cursing in your work?
My view: not at all. You may be a Christian, but the world is still the world. Many people curse, quite often in fact. Furthermore, violence is violence.
When I write a battle scene, I don't sugar coat. I make it gruesome and terrible. Why? Because that's the way it is. If you stab somebody in the chest, they're going to gag and choke, and blood is going to come up from their mouth.
You can choose to leave that out of course. But my reasons behind doing this are to show just how wicked and horrible war and violence really are. I want people to be repulsed by violence and war. I want to show it for what it really is.
My stories aren't straight violence, but violence often does occur, particularly in my fantasy stories. How do you feel about violence?
And cursing--not everyone has the same morals. It may even be a character trait that you use, somebody who curses all the time about every single thing. Either way, the average adult doesn't go "oh darn it" when they miss out on, for example, receiving two million dollars. They use a number of choice curse words.
You don't have to use cursing, of course. There are plenty of insults that can work just as well. For example, if a particular character is angry with somebody who is quite arrogant, you can have them say something like "You pompous bigot!" Or if there is a particularly vile or disgusting monster, something along the lines of "You wretched piece of filth!" In fact, this can work for just about anybody.
How do you feel about cursing in stories? Do you have any tips for other writers?
Please share. heart

Violence: It's just the way things go in the real world. It gives the book or piece a realistic touch to it. If it has violence, there still can be Christian morals. Even though murder is wrong, villains do it anyway. Like I said, it's just how things go.
Cursing: Honestly, I try to avoid cursing. But there are realistic character traits that involve cursing even if the character is happy. I really do try to avoid it. I use other words instead.

My view: not at all. You may be a Christian, but the world is still the world. Many people curse, quite often in fact. Furthermore, violence is violence. I don't honestly think so with the former, but I don't do so with the latter. Scarlet_Teardrops When I write a battle scene, I don't sugar coat. I make it gruesome and terrible. Why? Because that's the way it is. If you stab somebody in the chest, they're going to gag and choke, and blood is going to come up from their mouth.
My stories aren't straight violence, but violence often does occur, particularly in my fantasy stories. How do you feel about violence? I tone down violence in my battle scenes. Yes, people will bleed and die if not treated. No, they won't explode into gory chunks. Scarlet_Teardrops And cursing--not everyone has the same morals. It may even be a character trait that you use, somebody who curses all the time about every single thing. Either way, the average adult doesn't go "oh darn it" when they miss out on, for example, receiving two million dollars. They use a number of choice curse words. I'd probably stop at the first letter, or just use something like !*@%&$. No one needs to know what you swore, they just need to be informed that you have.

For me... being realistic is good when it comes writing stories. It may seem harmless and normal but when people read it, would they see you as a follower of Jesus, or someone who is but conformed their writings to the view of a dark, cruel world? Sorry for answering your question with a question. sweatdrop

Sorry for answering your question with a question. sweatdrop My stories are always Christian based or have Christian undertones at the very least. People will get from my writing that I am a follower of Jesus Christ.
It's not about conforming one's writing to a dark, cruel world, but about simply showing the dark, cruel world for what it is.
I do not usually enjoy stories that paint the world as a happy, pleasant place where everyone gets along because it simply doesn't work that way. People betray each other. They hurt. They steal. They murder. Wild animals will attack you and there is always somebody who wants to stir up drama and trouble.
Not to say that I don't enjoy happy stories. But--the world simply isn't a perfect place like The Brady Bunch.

for me, it always depends on the type of book. i honestly feel that sometimes cursing brings more power to the book. i personally don't curse but i feel that different kind of words brings more emotions. i also feel the same about violence. just to remind again, this is only about fiction books. sometimes, violence brings the picture and the illusions. i hope this doesn't change the way some people view me.

It shouldn't. And if it does, it's their problem, not yours.
I feel the same way. The "d" curse word is sometimes better in a situation than "darn". You don't say "oh darn" if you fail to stop a car crash.

I found a solution for cursing that comes in handy quite often. I have a character, First Lieutenant Lee Walker, Who is pbsessed with a clean language around ladies. If you curse while a female ANYTHING is present you will sorely regret it. Just stick a woman or a female dog into the scene and there you go. No cursing whatsoever. Unless you want to have a character flogged humiliated or lectured then you can let them curse.

Violence...I when I write, I do the same, I don't try to hide the fact that war is is bloody and terrible...My point to people, just as you said, is to show people through writting what it is really like...I try to make it realistic while using details... Cursing...I would avoid however because the Bible tells us we shouldn't use curse words... James 3:9-10 Quote: 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. I do realize that people in the real world do quite frequently use curse words, but in my writings I avoid it but still get my point across that my character is angry or something along that line using other words...
