User ImageWater, something Teagan had just realized was just as amazing as the trees that lay behind him. It flowed so smoothly and the slimy yet shiny things that went with the current went by so quickly that quite often Teagan couldn’t even see them go by. His neck was beginning to hurt from trying to see them.

His crystalline eyes were transfixed on the dark azure color watered as the wind began to become fierce, making the once smoothly flowing rapids quick and choppy. Some of the creatures within the water started flying out of the water and into the air. How are they able to do that? Do they have wings like the wind soquili always talks about? Upon closer inspection, no, they did not. Than how were they able to fly like that?

Looking at his back, he imagined wings sprouting from him. Would they look like the birds he had seen flying above, going from tree to tree and floating on the water? If Teagan had wings he would do those very things. He would fly from tree to tree, and let his wings and head float above the water before taking off into the air. He would fly into the sky and touch one of the fluffy white things that lazed about in the sky all the time. But he didn’t have any, and for now he would be on the ground.

Turning his attention from his back and many spots and back to the river that had once again turned into the semi-slow moving river, he noticed that the shining creatures were still shooting out off the waters. Perhaps they didn’t need wings. Maybe he could learn to fly too. He could be the first non winged soquili to fly! It would be monumental, and all the other horses would be so jealous.

A large grin appeared on his spotted face and he looked to the sky, ready to begin. “I will learn to fly!”

The soft sound of the trickling river filled the angeni’s ears; the day was quiet and nothing disturbed the peace. But soon a strong gust of wind blew through the threes, and buffeted the black winged Soquili, making his long black mane whip behind him. His cape flapped in the wind, making the distinctive sound of cloth straining and slapping itself. The wind continued its way through his thick black feathers, cooling the lone Soquili; he enjoyed being alone. When he is alone, he does not feel the burdened of other soquili’s distaste; they take one look at him and believe him to be a monster, an evil beast that is ready to strike. Háidēs’ chocolate brown eyes looked down at the long grass that grew around the river; it was tickling his muscular legs. His eyes shifted to the river before him, fish where flying out of the river and landing back into the water with a tiny splash, their scales flashing in the sun. They continued to do this, jump in and out of the cold river, aiming for the sky, a place they would never meet, only dream of.

It was down the river some that a young voice carried; a colt was talking about how he wanted to fly. Háidēs raised one of his black eyebrows and went to see the yelling colt; he soon stopped before he got close enough to the young creature. The foal was a light purple, heading into white, and had lots of black spots upon its body. His mane was blonde and contained a purple streak; if Háidēs did not know better, he would have said this boy was a girl because of his feminine features. But the strangest thing was that this young foal, who wanted to fly, had no wings.

To Háidēs it was much easier to talk to foals, because they had yet to be corrupted by the world around, “Excuse me Little One, how do you plan on learning to fly?” His voice was smooth as velvet and held a tiny bit a humor in it; he waited for the answer expectantly, wondering what this tiny foal would say in response.

Teagan jumped from the voice that appeared from out of nowhere, and it seemed like maybe he could fly if he really tried. Maybe his wings just hadn’t grown yet, which was possible right? “Who’s there?” He yelled to the surrounding area while turning in a big circle. He then saw the Soquili that had spoken. It was a demonic looking creature with black midnight wings. It wanted to take his soul, he knew it did, and he took a step back into the river. His blue eyes widened as he let his eyes rove over the menacing thing, and his back hoof joined his other hoof in the river.

“Monster?” He squeaked out the word, for he knew it was a monster already, but he just didn’t want to admit it to himself. He now wished that wings would spring from his back, maybe as many as the dark creature had, and he would fly away from him. Maybe if he wished for them, they would appear? “Let me sprout wings, please…” He muttered so the creature would not realize his intentions.

He was not sure if he should be amused or angry at the foal’s reaction; it had been a while since he had encountered someone who reacted that way towards him, not since he was a little older than a foal had it happened. Monster was what he was called by those who were afraid of his pitch black wings and the closeness he had with Death. Those who were smart were right to be afraid.

The purple colt was wishing to spout wings, perhaps so he could fly far away from here; Háidēs’ mouth gave a small twitch, the little one had not realized that the so called Monster had wings as well, “Little one, there are worse monsters out there than I.” The God looked at the foal again, his back was blank of any signs of wings, the foal would never be able to fly.

“You panicked before you could answer my question. How do you plan on learning how to fly if you do not posses wings to do so?” Háidēs had a soft spot for foals, because they were still innocent and not yet corrupted by the malevolence of adulthood.

He kept his eyes closed while the creature with giant black wings waited for the answer which his brain was unable to process at the moment because of his fear. Seconds later, he peeked one open to see if the creature was going to come at him, and when another second later it seemed he would not, he opened the other. Staring at the monster critically, he began to remember the question that was asked of him.

Was this creature saying that he couldn’t have wings? Well, that was rather presumptuous. Teagan believed that they just hadn’t decided to grow in yet, nevermind the fact that his parents didn’t have them. Maybe it was a sudden mutation that he was waiting for. But he felt the need to have wings. He wanted to jump as high as the fish from the stream, and they didn’t have wings. “I am going to grow them!”

Fear seemed to emanate from the young wingless light purple and black foal; Háidēs gritted his teeth, he was used to others fearing him, but it still stung to be thought as a creature worthy enough of fright. He tried to picture himself and did not see anything worthy of fright, but then again others had opinions formed that have been warped with rumor of how a monster should appear.

Brown eyes looked at the foal incredulously, “And how do you intend to grow these nonexistent wings of yours?” The black winged stallion knew that he should sway the colt away from the idea of flying, least he do something stupid, like jump of a cliff, believing that the wings will sprout from his back when he was in danger.

His fear long forgotten all Teagan could focus on was the fact that this guy didn’t think that he could do it! Frustration built inside his chest and he began breathing heavily.

“I just haven’t had my growth spurt yet!” He argued back, his voice getting a higher pitch as he tried to prove himself to this creature. He might have been frightening before but now all that the foal could see is the fiery anger he suddenly felt. He would get wings and show this guy! What did he really know anyways? Looking behind him he saw a hill. Huffing, he stomped his way over to it, determined to prove that wings would happen.
