Yoga has become very popular, so what do you know about it?

I was somewhat recently diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Almost every book about it I've read and almost every doctor I've seen has recommended Yoga to relieve intestinal tension.
My mom's done yoga for decades. She says she will teach me.

I have heard that it's very relaxing and good exercise, but other than that I know nothing about it.

From what I understand, yoga in its original form was a means of understanding and uniting with God or some sort of higher being. There are four kinds of yoga: nana yoga -uniting with God through through knowledge and reflection-, bhakti yoga -uniting with God through connection with friends and family-, karma yoga -uniting with God through hard work and helping others-, and raja yoga- uniting with God through psychophysical exercises. When we say "yoga" today, most people are referring to raja yoga because, while it is partially a spiritual thing, it's also good exercise which, as Lumanny pointed out, can be very beneficial for medical reasons.

I was hoping I could find a class that skipped that, and just focused on the exercises.

You might try taking a bunch of trial classes (I think some offer this) to find an instructor you like that attempts to focus mostly on the yoga. I find yoga instructors like to discuss spirituality as an attempt to express the benefits of their classes.

My most miraculous experience with yoga happened about a year ago. I suddenly found myself unable to walk, so I went to the doctor. He told me I had sciatica and that I wouldn't be able to walk for a month. I bought some crutches and, as I was sitting on my bed (I couldn't do anything else, the pain was unbearable) I skimmed a yoga book I had recently borrowed. Just the physical stuff, not the spiritual aspect. I saw that some of the poses claimed to heal sciatic pain, so I tried a few. I could barely do anything, though - I was a complete beginner, and suffering. But, I managed to persevere for about a hour and a half. And then, I got off of my bed, and stood up. I could stand. I took a few steps and the pain returned, causing me to almost fall down the steps, but the next morning, I was completely fine. The doctor didn't have any medicine for me besides crutches, but yoga cured me right away. ^^

Ulcerative Colitis, back pain, sciatica... Especially in the states. As one of my UC books says 'Americans love alternative therapies, which is both an opinion and a statement of fact.' For many people, this makes them wonder about how 'fake' the spiritual part of yoga might actually be. It's really fascinationg.

Yoga, Raja yoga, is more than just the standard "psychophysical" exercises. Yoga derives from the Hindu Vedas, and its polytheist core. Yoga is a mechanism to commune with both gods and demons.
So when you are "exercising" do you know who (or what) you are communing with? All yoga rooms have a Hindu idol present. The yoga is aimed at the god.
