Hiroko wasn't eavesdropping. She was overhearing. Two of her fellow spirits were in front of her in the dim sum restaurant line and were discussing the tale of the two lovers of the Tanabata festival. Hiroko found it to be a touching story despite this thought of hers not being reflected by any change on her features. While in line, she was also observing the buzz of festive cheer that was currently in control of the street and the business establishments along it. A light, closed, and mischevious-looking smile graced her features in her enjoyment of the vibrant and lively atmosphere on this day of celebration.
As the line crawled steadily forward, she occupied herself with thoughts regarding the Tanabata lovers and the role of rain in the historic event. That rain on Tanabata made the two unable to meet in a year was very unfortunate, she thought. However, this thought, too, did nothing in altering her expression as she continued to multitask with paying curious attention to her surroundings. Her thoughts went on as she considered her existence as an Ame-onna. Her rain fell according to her responding to wishes she hears and also according to her mood. For her, she thought on, there wasn't anything currently on her agenda pertaining to having rain fall.

No rain? Excellent. Hiroko wasn't the only one considering the rain that evening. Shin was as well, but his thoughts were on how clear the night sky was. Not a cloud to be seen, and all the stars shimmering brightly above. He was pleased with this. Rain did not agree with him; too many times had the minuscule rodent found himself struggling to wade through a puddle, or pounded by surprise rain falling on his head. So in his book, rain was far from desired.
Shin had discovered there were plenty of ways to get around the bathhouse and the buildings surrounding it without getting stepped on. Currently he was skittering across a railing leading up a flight of stairs outside, his wide eyes looking for a restaurant that appealed to him. He'd just arrived at the festival, and was hoping for a decent meal to start off the evening, and some pleasant company.
It was then that he spotted Hiroko in front of the dim sum restaurant. He paused on the railing, considering. He still thought of Hiroko as slightly odd, but his acquaintances were few and he did not wish to spend the evening alone. So, scrambling down the side of the railing, he hurried towards the ame-onna, and within seconds was tugging at the bottom of her robes.

The line was still crawling. It was crawling steadily though. It was a crawl that indicated that they will eventually be inside in ten minutes, maybe sooner; much sooner with a stroke of good luck. A stroke of good luck meant if a fair lot of patrons happened to vacate seats in quick, timely succession to mirror the trend that took place ten minutes previous and even ten minutes before that. Bad luck would mean that this trend had just passed.
Yes, patience was one of Hiroko's strongest virtues, which is why she was still in a pleasant mood despite having been in this line for around thirty minutes. If she detected interest, she became curiously interested as well. Was this restaurant popular? If so, why for? Given that the line had trickled immensely since she had arrived among the earliest to the festival, it was likely that a huge factor in explaining the large size of the line in the beginning was because this restaurant was one of the very few of the earliest already set for business at that time, to have already been open when she had arrived.
Now, there were more businesses that had opened their doors during the time that had passed. Thus, there were more eatery options that left the space behind her free as her fellow spirits embraced the other options.
Then, she was pleasantly surprised. She had felt the tug on her robes and when she checked on it, she saw Shin.
"Why, hello," Hiroko greeted the mouse spirit with an attention-catching enthusiasm the was obvious to what seemed like everyone nearby with just the exception of herself. The line had gone again into one of its temporary pauses. The Ame-onna crouched down much like she had upon her first encounter with Shin. Her attention was apparently selective as she didn't seem to register the murmurs questioning her sanity from nearby fellow spirits. "How are you, Sir Shin?" Hiroko asked him good-naturedly. Would he reply to her, acknowledge that he in fact knew her, who was being glanced at with gazes that specified her as a loon, or would he pretend not to know her. Either way, from the carefree expression on her face, Hiroko seemed capable of proceeding in any situation without feeling any embarrassment whatsoever and remaining at her present state of cheerfulness. She was unpredictable, hard-skinned, and a lure for odd happenings. Anyone would be well-advised to be braced for quirkness when around her as such events and moments may suddenly erupt just as likely as not.

Shin found himself slightly flustered at the sight of Hiroko bending down yet again in the midst of all these people. Honestly, did she have no pride? Eager to quit making a scene, the mouse shoved aside his own price and took advantage of the kneeling spirit to gently climb up her figure, taking care not to put holes in the fabric of her clothing, and stand on her shoulder.
"You can stand up now." He mumbled, feeling his furry cheeks grow slightly red. He took some comfort in knowing he probably wasn't too visible there, so it wasn't as if the whole world would see him perching like...a bird or some other common pet. "I'm doing well, Hiroko-san. And yourself?"
Catching the scent of the food drifting out into the night air, Shin sniffed, stopping himself just short of visibly drooling. It was simply enticing. "It smells magnificent." Shin muttered, continuing to sniff.

Midori drew her body upward, observing the festivities the went on all around. The sights, the sounds, the scents - each one of these had her head wavering, eyes searching and tongue constantly flickering in and out, seeking the origin of these tantalizing threads. Finally choosing one particular trail, she began to slither along in her upright position. Travel on her belly was faster and more comfortable, but in this environment it would be suicidal with all the bumbling feet.
Remarkably, the trip occurred without a hitch, Midori only occasionally having to a warning hiss to those whose feet came a bit too close. She wan't seeking confrontation, but she still preferred to keep her spine intact, thank you very much. The destination she arrived at was the line for the dim sum restaurant, the crowd moving slowly but steadily. Each whiff of the tantalizing aroma stirred her hunger even more, right up to the point where she began to unconsciously search for prey. There, on someone's shoulder, a mouse, a simple little door mouse. Jaws began to open, teeth bared - then just a quickly snapped shut. She was certainly not going to eat another customer. No only would it earn her a good deal of ire, Midori knew that pleasant conversation with other customers would be much more satisfactory than making them into an ill begotten meal. So for now she waited in the line, tongue fluttering in anticipation.

Unfortunately, Hiroko wasn't very adept at being in tune with others feelings. Being the INTP personality type she was, she's quite slow to really picking up the depth of how others may be feeling in situations fairly quickly enough. So how her odd train of thought currently went was that she was in this line for thirty minutes but she wondered why she hadn't thought of crouching and enjoying the view like this as well sooner. Thus, she wouldn't mind staying crouched as she was a bit longer since at the moment the line seem to be about to move but maybe in just another five minutes.
These trains of thought though only took a moment as she sent her eyes scanning behind her bangs from left to right in fascination at the hustle and bustle of the Tanabata-goers' 'feet.' Even just seeing feet themselves like this, hurrying and strolling about, showed festive liveliness as much as observing upper bodies. However, in the moment she had took in the scenery at that position in fascination, she had missed Shin's blush. She turned her head to him slightly when she took into consideration to try and allot him as much space where he was on one of her narrow shoulders as she replied to him with a merry grin, "I'm glad to hear you're doing well. I'm doing fine." She included a nod of her head as she added, "Indeed, it smells fantastic. For food, I imagine it's going to be tricky to recognize and match a smell of a certain dish ordered in comparison to the mix of the tantalizing scents of the delicacies here in general."
Then, she had noticed another fellow spirit had joined the line behind them and decided to offer an invitation to join in their conversation. "Hello, I'm Hiroko, an Ame-onna, and this is my friend Sir Shin. May I inquire as to your name?" Hiroko smiled widely with her bright greeting to the snake spirit.
But just then, the line began to move sooner than expected and the movements of the line caught by her peripheral vision prompted her to stand as a reaction, "Ah, the line looks like we'll all get inside this time, would you like to eat with us?" Hiroko walked forward in a somewhat sideways-like fashion at a pace that didn't delay the line, but maintained conversational distance as she also extended her invitation of eating all together to the snake spirit.
Once inside, Hiroko waited as waiters escorted customers to tables in turns.

As spirits pooled in, more pooled out. Gaggles and groups and an equally long line moved far more quickly out of the restaurant and splintered off towards various other locations, no one seeming to have a clear idea in mind of exactly what they wanted to do except for one slowly moving spirit who appeared to float more than walk.
This spirit in particular was clad in a white kimono and kept her short blue hair slightly in her face, where it contrasted eerily with her white skin and equally white eyes. Tied to her obi with a black rosary of the Shinto variety hung a lantern that glowed a cheerful yellow, giving her a far warmer glow than the rest of her body exuded. Passing out of the doors, it became obvious that this woman was, indeed, floating as the bottom of her kimono tapered off into nothingness and if she had feet, they were decidedly invisible. She looked around briefly, blue lips set in a calm but controlled smile, as she felt a slight humidity beside her grow cold.
The Ame-onna's constantly wet hair, skin, and kimono were turned to frost, though as this spirit a Yuki-onna, moved away, they quickly readied themselves to melt. She took no notice of her, nor the mouse atop her shoulder or the snake following behind, and instead moved further up the street past crowds of giggling females and joking males, all catching up with one another with stories of their last Tanabata festival. This Yuki-onna in particular had not publicly celebrated a festival such as this to her recollection, and so the proper means to go about it were a bit lost on her. She knew something of the myth, something of writing wishes and hanging them in trees in the hopes that they would come true, but she didn't quite know how the two correlated to one another, not that it really mattered.
Floating silently over gravel, she found her way to a particularly well cared for tree that only had a few wishes strapped to its branches. Beneath it was a large flat stone with calligraphy tools and the means on which to write. Looking down at the items, her pale hands picked them up and she pondered.
What did spirits really need to wish for?* A light pitterpatter of small claws against the ground was muted to most individuals, drowned out by the many voices and sizzling friers and whatever else background noise there could possibly be. He could hear it well, though, he could always hear things well and, thankfully due to his particularly well defined sense of hearing, he was generally able to block out white noise and listen to the more important things. His running wasn't important, but his orders were.
"Low on staff, help out," Tetsushin sneered, pointy white teeth showing briefly. Restaurants weren't his cup of tea and he had very little practice on how to deal with them. In truth, he had no practice at all and this would be his first time ever stepping in for staff outside of the bathhouse proper. Well, there was a first time for everything, he supposed, and perhaps it would be easier than cleaning the tubs.
Yes, decidedly easier than cleaning the tubs.
Rounding a corner, he slowed a bit and saw what a massive line there was, furry brows upturning with surprise, lacing itself with concern. Perhaps not as easy as he thought, but still easier. Picking up his pace, he began sifting through other spirits legs and between them, apologizing all the way. It was easy to do when you were no bigger than the average human's hip, at best, and once he got inside he skittered to the kitchen area, grabbing an apron and pulling that on, then tying his sleeves tightly back so they wouldn't get in the way.
One of the nearer workers directed him to a freshly seated table and he grabbed two of the smaller menus, one of the regular sized. When one worked in such an area, you needed to accommodate for all kinds. Stepping out quickly, his nails clacked against the tiles and he bowed to the three customers before placing the menus in front of the Ame-onna, snake, and mouse. In particular, he attempted to hide a cheeky grin in regards to the mouse; such a small creature eager to wear such an important color and such fancy dress. Perhaps he was the prince of mouse spirits, or else he had an overinflated ego.
"Welcome, we do apologize for the wait. I am Tetsushin and I will serve you while you are here. Our recommendations today are," and for this he pulled some names out of thin air, as he had not actually been told what they were and even if he had, he hadn't been listening, "Somen, Yakitori and Yakizakana. May I start you off with a plate of onigiri while you wait? Perhaps some tea, Kuzuyu or Sake?" Whatever would get them out of his hair faster, but it was no wonder they needed help during festivals when they only allowed one server and waiter to a single group and they both were the same person.

He felt it, that chill in the air as the Yuki-onna floated past. It made him shiver, lose track of the conversation and proceed to hold himself briefly. His eyes followed the frosty woman as she passed them by, and his thoughts only returned to the current situation once she had left their presence and he felt warm again.
Shin had seen the snake. Oh yes, and as she took her place in line behind them, Shin felt incredibly insecure about his size, and the fact that, spirits or not, he was a mouse, and she a snake. But aside from keeping his eyes planted on the serpent, he showed no sign of fear or insecurity. Instead, he nodded in greeting at the snake, agreeing - although reluctantly - with Hiroko. "Yes, we're all about to go in. You should...join us."
As they were seated, Shin took the time to look around at the restaurant. Like everything at the bathhouse, it was designed intricately and magnificent. There was no shortage of ornaments, and specifically for the festival there had been hung many wishes from the walls, and the lights dimmed, a spell cast upon the ceiling to create the appearance of a night sky. The mouse was in awe, and almost did not hear the kitsune as he waited on them.
"Ah, tea and onigiri, please," Shin responded pleasantly, still slightly distracted by his surroundings. However, his attention was grabbed when he looked at the fox again. Surely he'd seen this fellow around the bathhouse itself? He wondered briefly if it was common for the workers to work...well, everywhere.

Late -late-late, one would think he was always late to everything the way they hollered at him! As if being turned into a mop on a regular basis wasn't terrible enough, they always had to yell, and oh his poor ears..Miyabi swore he'd go deaf one of these days, his hearing was perfectly fine! Maybe a tad sake impaired on this particular night, but otherwise absolutely fine! Now if only he could remember what he'd been ordered to do...
Miyabi was fluffy blur of brown fur and loose blue cloth as he went bounding down one of the bathhouse corridors at top speed, rushing off to fulfill an order he'd quite forgotten after sharing a few drinks with some of his more friendly co-workers. Long floppy ears neatly tied high on his head in an amusing form of a ponytail, though that hardly stopped them from flailing about behind him like a pair of windsocks caught in a storm. Tiny black claws scrabbling on the elegant tiled floor as he took a turn too sharp and found himself kissing the oriental pattered wall. A most unpleasant full body kiss that left him sprawled out dizzily on his back and cursing at the garment that was so often his downfall.
He found it hard to believe that they could not have sewn him something to fit his size, rather then handing him an outfit down from a much larger worker. Miyabi was sure that they made him wear it purely for they're own amusement, and also because it made him all the more 'adorable'. Though he'd never understand that particular path of logic. He found it annoying and troublesome, not at all adorable.
The room spinning, or maybe it was his head? Miyabi hoisted himself up and carefully wobbled the rest of the way to his destination. Little nose twitching as he made his way outside, taking deep breaths of the fresh festival filled air. The aromas of hot food clearing his senses a bit, while having the effect of making him quite hungry. But of course the customers came first, and a customer he was not. Following the scent anyways, his padded feet meeting the gravel path, long uniform dragging about his feet and hands noisily as he moved. Pausing in his aimless ambling for a moment when he spotted a lone spirit hovering beside one of the many decorated wish trees that had been so neatly trimmed and set for the festival.
Miyabi felt himself staring for a moment, his usual shyness overtaken by his curiosity of the lone female. Surely she should have been out enjoying herself with all the other customers, so why was she all alone? "Ah..M-miss! Excuse me b-but are you lost? If you n-need, Icould-I-would happily escort you to the festivity's, o-or maybe a nice bath?" He stuttered in a welcoming tone. Even if he didn't remember his previous task, he did at least remember it was his duty to care for the customers!

Looking upward, Midori found herself addressed by a somewhat imposing yet intriguing Ame-onna. A wayward drop fell onto her head, causing her to give it a startled shake, but the conversation was much too pleasant for her to be riled up by a little water.
"A pleasure to meet you rainy one, small one, I'm Midori-Hime, though you may refer to me as Midori if you wish," she replied congenially. Shortly after giving her name the line began to move forward interrupting any possible conversation for the moment, instead an offer for sharing a meal coming forward. When the door mouse repeated the sentiment, if somewhat reluctantly, she certainly couldn't bring herself to refuse, now could she? Not that she had been planning to, that is. "I would be most delighted to join you both," she responded.
On the way through the door Midori saw something approaching out of the corner of her eye, and then abruptly the temperature plummeted. Her once upright posture sagged dramatically, mouth clenched as she attempted to ignore the cold-mandated lethargy. The episode soon passed, but she couldn't help but give a snap of her mouth in irritation when motion fully returned. Curse the cold! It made her a prisoner in her own body, and she did not like it one little bit.
The path forward was much nicer, to her great relief, and Midori took her time to admire the decorations - she had to admit that the starry sky ceiling was quite a nice touch. Coming to the table, she moved around in a circle for a bit, arranging her body into a comfortable coil, sinking down with a contented hiss. And to make things even better, here was the server!
"Kuzuyu and yakitori please, with onigiri to start," she said to the kitsune, feeling that would be a good beginning to filling her belly, and a nice start to the evening itself.

Hiroko had only been able to respond with a thrilled smile, which coupled with the arrangement of her bangs gave her what could be mistaken for quite a suspicious and caution-provoking look, before her reply of words to the snake spirit’s acceptance was barred by the cold that froze her up for an instant. During the brief moment she had felt somewhat immobilized, her hidden gaze followed the culprit of her momentary frozen state curiously. And when said moment had passed, her attention returned to her companions who apparently felt the passing spirit’s chill as well.
In truth, the sudden cold had not been an entirely inconvenient interruption since Hiroko was always open to coming across means of keeping cool during this summer season and what had just occurred seemed to be one such encounter of among the more bizarre sort.
Midori-Hime. The name ran across her mind again once inside the restaurant. It was always splendid, interesting meeting someone new. There were many things that piqued her interest as though she possessed an internal radar that was constantly seeking out possibilities to consider enthusiastically in everything around her and that transpires. And this gathering of acquaintances and new faces was certainly no exception of course.
Just as she had done so with Shin, Midori, and virtually everyone she laid eyes on, she gave the waiter a pleasant, toothy smile as well before picking up and skimming the menu as she listened to his recommendations. The selection was marvelous and she replied with her request to the waiter with a grin, “Somen and tea for me, please. And yes, please, onigiri during the wait would be delightful. Thank you, Sir Tetsushin.”
She admired more of the restaurant’s interior after making her request for her meal. “The décor of the restaurant is very impressive,” she commented as she moved her head gradually to scan in fair detail placement of ornaments and the spell cast above them. “Midori-Hime, Sir Shin,” she next asked her companions while angling them both within her field of vision, “have you made a Tanabata wish yet?”

Onigiri for the lot of them, then, and a small set for the mouse. Memorizing this, his lip curled into a condescending grin and he nodded once all of the orders were taken, bowing, and rushing off. Words were exchanged and he even had to get his paws dirty, molding the rice into the perfect onigiri shape. Smaller spirits with small hands roughly the size of the mouse were molding their own, perfect onigiri and placing them on the tiniest bamboo tray he had ever seen, same as the tea (which tonight seemed to be a special blend called suta-yoru or Starry Night and consisted of a dark tea base with a dribble of honey and flecks of floating white herb).
All of the different smells, as good as they were, were beginning to give Tetsushin a headache. His ears were folded back as tightly as they would go to drown out most of the chatter, but his other senses were just as good as his hearing, particularly his sense of smell. Still, the amusement the little mouse customer was bringing him for merely existing was making this order somewhat worth it.
Tea set and onigiri in place, he received word on how long the rest of their food would take and was pleasantly surprised it would not be long at all. Holding the proper sized set against his chest carefully, the six onigiri lay neatly against one another in two rows of three while beside them sat two dainty cups and a hearty pourer. The miniature set for the mouse was the same, just small and only with three onigiri, this resting comfortably--if not slightly precariously--on Tetsushin's nose.
Out he went, into the wild, starry, restaurant yonder, and he came to a gentle halt at the table. "Your orders will be ready shortly. We have prepared you a special onigiri, each with a different center that we hope is to your liking." With a flourish, he set the large tray down between Hiroko and Midori, then turned to Shin, grin returning. "A specialty was prepared for you, sir," and, placing his hands behind his back, he leaned down and rested his snout against the table, grin growing. He was waiting for the mouse to retrieve his tray as his tail swished in amusement.
"Ah... M-miss!"
The yuki-onna's white eyes drifted from the blank wish card to over her shoulder, only to be met with a crowd and no one looking at her. Pursing her lips, he brow furrowed in momentary confusion until the sound continued and she looked down at her feet. There, stood a brown, fluffy rabbit in worker attire, carrying the blue that denoted males. And good for him, too, she would not have been able to tell his gender had it not been that or the slightly deeper than average tone to the rabbit's voice (or so she imagined was deeper than average for rabbits).
"Lost?" she repeated with a lilt, a slight chuckle fading after the word. "No, I am not lost." A smile creased her blue lips and her eyes narrowed as she examined the rabbit. She was new to this location, and in truth, to any spiritual bathhouse at all, so these concepts were rather alien to her. Down from the snowy mountains she had gone, traveling hither and thither where the air took her. It was rough in this Summer heat, and the offer of a bath was so very tempting. "An icy bath?" she questioned, turning to face Miyabi fully, her lantern waggling lethargically.
Yes, perhaps that was just what she needed.
"Would you wait on me?" the icy cool of her voice melted into something more sultry as she picked her chin up and crossed her arms beneath her bust. Perhaps after a nice cool down she could get to thinking clearly, maybe even find something worthy of her wishful attention.

Namakula was tired of her play on the large saraha's and plains of the African continent. She too tired of her large pride of lions and wished for the comfort of good food, good service and a well managed shop. None served better then the Bathhouse or so she had been told by the many spirits that encompassed her homeland.
As she shifted from animal into a more humane form, one she was usually quite pleased with. Her fire orange hair was hidden by the large black hat, little flickers of light dangled around illuminating her predatory orange eyes. Her face seem to look at others like prey, intent on the slightest bit of fear would entice her to attack. Her body too was covered in a gold armor most common for the Lioness's highest warrior class spirit, and she not only prided herself on it but took glorious fact that it made other the other Lioness's shrink from her.
Quelling her nature though, for she wasn't in her pride lands now, she took steps into the bathouse where a restaurant was set up. A small spirit animal took one look at her and bowed low.
"Welcome Namakula of the Rajini Pride, We have been expecting your visit," he jumped from his spot before leading her to a table situated off to the corner of the restaurant, "We have many specialties going on right now with the Tanbata festival happening, i shall leave this hear for you to look and go over your choices."
Nama smirked pulling her hat off, removing the large cape she wore as well and using it to sit on, regardless of where she was, she would not sit among anything but the softness of her cape. She looked down at what passed as a menu, reading over the Tanbata's beginning. How crass, she smirked again, such lovers in her pride would've been killed for food at the first sign of such weakness. Not a romantic soul in her bone, she let her gaze wander over the fellow customers, her eyes landed on a few of interest before she leaned back, she was not on the prowl tonight, she thought.

Miyabi fidgeted slightly, shifting from foot to foot, his beady black eyes wide and staring as the icy looking spirit finally caught sight of him. If he'd had the option he would have wrung his fingers together, but the lengthy overly baggy sleeve's prevented him from doing such. It was a wonder he could use his hands at all the way the things twisted and always caught upon his little nails. "O-oh! We'll that is good to hear, being lost i-is quite unpleasant!"Lost, stepped on, stuck in dark or wet places, all unpleasant things to have happen, and if anyone knew best it was him. Because somehow those very things seemed to happen to Miyabi on a regular basis.
Miyabi's little nose twitching, furry lips and whiskers tugging into a tiny graceful smile "Icy or hot, with salts or scents or scrubs! A-any type of bath at all Miss I will happily f-fetch for you." If his blush could have been seen beneath his fur it would have been a bright shade of pink. A bit awestruck as the beautiful spirit asked him to wait on her, and with such a melodic voice."W-w-wait on you" The little rabbit stammered for a moment before dipping his body forwards, giving a low bow to the newest customer. His little nose touching the gravel, wild ears flopping comically over his head to lay across the stones.
"I-it would be my pleasure to wait on you Miss! Any-anything you request I will happily bring, as I am a most wonderful worker!" Miyabi chirped excitedly while staring at the stones beneath his feet, his little heart fluttering away with the joy and luck of it all. He never got the beautiful ones! Well never got any ones really..he was a bath scrubber..the mop of the place. Always got stuck cleaning up after the slimy ones, not that he minded..but still, it was so nice to finally meet a decent customer. "I-if you would, the baths are..umm.." his head whipping up, nose twitching furiously as he spotted the wide doors that led to the bathhouse. "They are right this way, I-if you'd like I can also arrange for a room? If you plan on staying th-the night that is."
