It had been almost a year since Seimei had left. And Zephyraes's heart was still not the same. She felt as if a hole had opened up inside her, no larger than a pin p***k. But every single day it grew a little wider, a little bigger and swallowed another piece of herself.

Zeph was not one to deny her feelings. She knew she'd fallen head first, and hard, for the flower Goddess. She'd taught her to fly, they'd grown up together. Zeph had thought that they would be together for all time. And then Sei was gone. And Zeph remained.

She tried to hide it from Shei and the others, the fact that she was wasting away, and for the most part, it worked. She knew Shei knew what was going on inside her head. Shei was her sister, and knew her more completely than any lover could. But Taelence and the others, Zeph mostly had fooled. She went to lessons with Kiha to teach the little Priestess everything she could and she stargazed with Ariston. But nothing she did could stop that hole from getting bigger. She was dying. From the inside.

That morning Zeph found herself in one of the places she wished she could forget. She'd been flying to the shop when she just happened to look down and saw the garden she'd taught Sei to fly in. The heart break overtook her and for the first time in her life, Zephyraes, the Goddess of the Air, fell out of the sky and into a pile of flowers. Instantly she started crying, the sobs shaking her already fragile frame. Anyone who could see her now would know the true extent of what Zeph was going through. She was thin, too thin, and her wings were ratty as if she'd stopped taking care of them. There were knots in her tail and her coat had lost it's glossy sheen. Zephyraes was starting to become only a shadow of her former self.

Today was a glorious day! It was true, the heat did stifle a vixen, but soaring through the soft, puffy white clouds alleviated the sweltering. As it was, today was the first day Cerys had to herself. No one needed the Goddess of Charity's help today, it seemed, so she got a day for herself. Strange as it was to her, she didn't mind.

Her white wings, protruding from the edges of the rather large cloud she inhabited for the moment, snapped out of view. Down she plunged, the mist from the cloud clinging to her fur as she sped towards the ground. Moments before she would have struck the ground, the lushly feathered wings whipped open, allowing her to alight gracefully on the grass.

Her bright scarlet eyes, dancing with her natural cheeriness and the amplified rush of flying, bounced from one sight to the next. The Lucky Noodle shop, she had found, was surrounded with dense woods, vibrant flower gardens, multiple vegetable gardens, and mile upon mile of flowing, golden-green meadows. So far, she had only explored two meadows, one mini-forest (with Zeru, the valiant boy), and she had planted a flower garden. Though, for the life of her, she could not remember where exactly it had been. Which meant, in theory, that if she went from garden to garden and simply took care of all of them, she would find hers!

Smiling brightly, with her tail swaying and curling behind her, she walked forward. The flowers here were pretty, with lots of loud colours. Sadly, that meant this wasn't her garden, since she had only planted blue, red, and white flowers. No matter! Leaning over, her lashes falling to brush the tops of her cheeks, she drew in a deep breath of the sweet, almost overpowering, scent of the flowers. It was a bit heady, that scent, and she found herself stumbling back a step.

With a shake of her head, she chuckled, "Naughty flowers!" Another smile crossed her lips, just for a moment, before she caught the faintly close sound of sobs. Her spine straightened, stiffening like a steel rod, as her bright eyes became sharp. Someone was distressed, which meant that she was needed.

Her ears flickered back, swiveling around every direction, trying to pick up the exact location of the source. Another soft sob wrenched at her heart, causing a frown to pull at her lips. It sounded like it was coming from the other side of the tree line. Turning her head, she squinted through the trunks, barely making out the form of another fox. Mostly white. Quite large. Very likely another God or Goddess. Without a second thought, she pushed her way through the clustered trees. Branches caught at her curls, and the bright red bow that held them all in check. Vines snagged continuously on the corset pieces around her arms and legs, further infuriating her until she burst from the foliage, looking a complete mess.

Frantically, she attempted to fix her disheveled appearance, picking vines, leaves, and twigs as best she could from her fur, hair, and partial clothing. Giving up after picking numerous things from herself, she plastered on a bright, friendly smile that came far too easily before stepping closer to the sobbing creature. "Excuse me," she murmured, keeping her voice soft and low, understanding, comforting, "are you all right? I couldn't help but hear you, and, forgive my intrusion, I thought I could help."

A kind voice broke through Zephyraes barrier of utter anguish. The Goddess raised her head sightly and looked into a pair of the kindest eyes she'd ever seen. They stared down upon her without judgment, though Zeph felt they should; she knew she looked an absolute mess. Those eyes held compassion and light, and love. Things Zeph had felt once, more than she did now. Now she was too hollow.

The other was a Goddess, just like herself, the color of blue steel, with wings the color of clouds and soft crimson eyes. She wore white corseting around her legs and tail, and Zeph knew who she was. She was Cerys, the Goddess of Charity. She and Zephyraes had met once in the shop once, not long after Seimei had left. Fresh tears fell at the though of her almost lover and she tried to blink them back.

That day she'd been in bad form and hadn't been very nice to the other Goddess. And now that she should find Zeph, here, and like this. It was almost too much to bear. But something inside Zeph had......cracked and she couldn't care about her appearance, nor feel embarrassment for allowing a peer to see her in such a state.

She looked away from those kind eyes and sniffed. Still she couldn't meet Cerys's eyes again. And she couldn't say she was fine, like most others would have. Because she was not fine. She was so not fine that it wasn't even funny.

I need a long hot soak in the hot springs, she thought, but didn't say out loud. She didn't say anything in fact. What could you say in this situation. "Oh no, I'm perfectly fine. I just lost the love of my life a year ago and I just fell out of the sky, but I'll totally be okay."? Some how Zephyraes didn't think that would go over well.

So she sat there, hoping that one could actually die of embarrassment. Because she didn't know how to explain to this perfectly exquisite creature (because even in her stupor, Zeph had to admire Cerys's beauty) that she didn't know if she wasn't beyond help anymore.

Something nagged at the back of mind; a small twinge of recognition struggling to decipher if this was the same Goddess she'd met briefly before. It couldn't be. Zephyraes had been much lovelier than this poor Goddess. Still.... Her sharp eyes focused harder on her, dissecting her patterns and colours. Not long after, a small, soft gasp passed her lips. It was her! Oh, the poor vixen!

In a flutter of utterly feminine grace, she sat softly beside her. Those bright eyes reflecting sorrow, greater than she could fathom. She knew the story of what had happened to the Goddess of Air. Her sister, Shei'dalin, had been one of the first Celestials she'd met upon coming here. Shei had told her many things, for which she was grateful. But this? She was not grateful to know this. Zephyraes did not deserve such bitter despair. "You poor dear," Cerys crooned softly, reaching a paw up to brush a strand of tangled hair away from her eyes, letting her fingers brush against the tops of her cheeks.

She looked old and worn. Hollow. Uncaring. it almost brought tears to her eyes. Without waiting for an answer, or even for another comment of any kind, the darker furred Goddess took her paws. "Come," she whispered, offering another smile, "You need a good bath. And a rather large, wide-toothed comb. I promise you will feel better afterwards. I always do." A quick scan of her body made her grimace, shuddering slightly. "You need a nice, hot meal, too. I could cook something for you, but only after the bathing and the combing."

She smiled once more, leaning down to gently nudge her shoulder. "It's all right, Zephyraes. I've told you once I would not to a thing to harm you. I meant it then, and I mean it now," she murmured, staying close physically, since physical contact alleviated some forms of stress and pain. Or so she'd read.

A small part of Zephyraes told her to tell the other Goddess that her assistance was not necessary and that she could look after herself. But Zeph wasn't one to lie, even to herself and she knew deep down that she looked like hell. She certainly felt like hell. So, weakly, she took Cerys's paw and stood up, wobbling a bit. She flapped her wings making sure that they weren't broken. That would have been the icing on the cakem breaking a wing bone. But it seemed fate favored her in this one small thing and had granted her a boon; nothing seemed to be broken.

She leaned close to Cerys, allowing the Goddess to support her weight, which wasn't much, and concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other. She surrendered herself to the fem, allowing her to guide and move her in the direction she wanted to go. At this moment she wasn't under her own power and completely at the mercy of Cerys. The Goddess could have walked her off a cliff and Zeph would not have noticed until she hit the bottom. But something wasn't right.

When she'd been on the ground, she'd felt...well not fine exactly, but not like this. The edges of her vision were darkening. She tried to shake it off and concentrate on her walking. But she was tired, so very tired, and the blackness at the edge of her vision threatened to sweep her into oblivion. She struggled with it, she knew that if she passed out then it would be up to Cerys to carry her where ever they were going. Or worse, Cerys would abandon her. Zeph stumbled over a rock and then kept going.

It was hard. Every moment was agonizing as Zephyraes didn't know where she was going so there was no way to tell herself how much longer she had to be on her feet. Step, step, step. She lost track of how long it had been since she had fallen out of the sky. She almost stopped to ponder that, the Goddess of Air falling out of the sky, but then realized that if she didn't keep going that the blackness would claim her. So instead she pondered it in her head. But only for a moment. Because this was also around the time that Zeph realized that she was starting to ramble in her mind and decided that it was just better to concentrate on her steps again. She was definately too tired for this.

But it seemed that they were already there. Zeph raised her head and smiled faintly. It was then that her strength finally failed her and her head kept rising until it tipped all the way back and Zeph crumpled into an undignified heap on the ground. She never even felt the impact. But she did think, just moments before, of how proud she was of herself for keeping together for so long.

A slight frown fluttered across the corseted Goddess' face. The way the female had hesitated struck her deeply, echoing in every atom of her being. She was not used to people hesitating when she confronted them. Then, however, Zephyraes took her paw, allowing her to gently pull her up. She noticed immediately when she wobbled, and her bright eyes were all-too knowing as she watched her flex her wings. Poor darling. She must have done something awfully not like her if she has that look on her face. Her expression, full of bitter thankfulness and dark, dark sadness, was enough to make a fresh wave of tears come to her eyes. She wanted to wrap her arms around her and hold her close, telling her that it would all be okay. It would all be okay.

As the lighter Goddess concentrated on her pawfalls, Cerys busied herself with looking over her. Physically, she definitely needed a lot of attention. She could see the large mats in her fur, the grime clinging to her once pristine feathers. Quickly, she looked away, choking back another round of tears on her behalf. Mentally, she knew Zeph needed someone to care. To love her and be there for her.

I could do that. Cheerfully, she centered on that thought, manipulating it into a sweet, promising day dream. Though, when the Air Goddess stumbled, she jerked back to reality with a small gasp. "Are you all right?" She questioned, bending her head to quickly examine her ankles. Satisfied when she found nothing to worry over, she straightened again and began forward once more. "Do be careful, please. I don't know what I'd do if you got hurt anymore under my care," she murmured, squeezing her arm gently in a make-shift hug.

Sooner than she thought, they were at the hot spring. The bubbling water sent rising steam gliding over the two Celestials, bringing a clean, pure scent with it. With another smile curving her lips, Cerys turned her head, focusing her gaze on her charge. “The water must be phenomenal,” she purred, her long corseted tail flicking and swaying behind them as she examined the pool’s surrounding. Pretty blue flowers, many different kinds--some completely unknown to her--peeked out from tree branches, bushes, tall patches of grass. The fallen petals of said flowers were wind scattered; strewn across the lush ground, the water of the spring, some still danced on a breeze of steam above the water’s surface. It was enough to take her breath away.

Happily, she turned to Zephyraes. Her smile, however, did not last long. Zeph looked pale, weak. “Zeph? Dear, are you--” Horror spanned her features as the other Goddess’s legs went weak. She tried her best to keep her companion from the ground, but she was no Goddess of Strength. Even with her wings spread, her claws digging into the ground, and how tight of a hold she had on her, it was no use. All she managed was to keep her from thudding to the ground. “Zephyraes?” She called to her, moving quickly to prop her head up, patting her cheek frantically. “Zephyraes!” She hissed, after waiting a moment for her to answer, as she gently shook her shoulders. Still, she did not answer.

Panicking, she looked up, realizing exactly how close they were to the spring. As she twisted her body, trying not to drop the head that was propped on her leg, she reached with her paw to try and dip some water out. Her effort was commendable, but it didn’t work. She was too short. Or too far away. With a growl, she huffed, the feathers of her wings fluffing as they unfurled from her back, stretching to dip a few inches into the spring on one side. Her eyes brightened as she clutched Zeph to her, scooting back barely so she dip her wing further into the water before bringing it over the other Goddess’s face, letting the rapidly cooling water drip slowly off her feathers.

The water splashed Zephyraes's face, and she stirred ever so slightly. But her mind wasn't in the present. Instead she was almost two years away. There was air under her wings, and she was still a kit. She swooped, turning summersaults over and over again. A glance behind her to make sure that the other Goddess kept up with her. Her constant companion. Her love.

Seimei.

The hole in her heart opened just a little wider.

Oh how that name cut into her like a sharp, jagged piece of ice. Where it once brought sunlight and warmth, now it brought resentment, self pity, and the never ending question of why?

One year. It took Zeph a year to stop looking for her. A year to stop perking up every time the door opened at the shop. A year to stop staring relentlessly out the window, hoping to catch sight of large pink wings. A year to stop hoping. A year to start crying. The tears hadn't stopped.

Had Sei even loved her? Zeph had been aware of Seimei's personality. She'd known that Sei was flaky and flirty with others. Zephyraes had been willing to accept that. Because at the end of the day Sei would have come home to her, and no one else. Wouldn't she have? Zeph was no longer sure. Sei had kissed her on the cheek. Smiled. And then flown off. Zeph had stared at her longingly until she was little more than a speck in the distance. Flying off for home.

"I'll see you tomorrow Zeph! I promise! We'll go flying!"

The last words Zeph would ever hear from Seimei. Had she meant them? Or had they been said to soften the eventual blow when Zeph would find out that she was gone? When Sei didn't turn up days later Zephyraes had gone to the little cottage Seimei and her family had lived in. The place had been boarded up, and any trace of them was long gone. No note taped to the door, no furniture left in the house when Zeph had managed to pull one of the boards loose. She'd stood in the living room, on bare wooden floors, sunlight streaming in through cracks in the boarded up windows and had known in her heart of hearts that Seimei wasn't coming back. And she was all alone.

Back in the present, Zeph coughed and her eyes fluttered open. Up Zeph, an inner self commanded. Get up. Pupils dilated, lungs breathed shallowly, heart rate sped up, pumping to get her circulatory system up and running again. She flapped her wings uselessly, a sign, however small that she wasn't dead yet. More coughing. Another useless flap of her wings.

"Where am I?" She managed to croak out, as her eyelids fluttered again, opened, and then managed to focus on her surroundings.

"Zeph, darling, please wake up," Cerys murmured, panic echoing through her sort voice. Gently, she stroked the other Goddess' hair, her bright eyes shining with fear. What would she do if she didn't wake up? She knew she couldn't--wouldn't--leave her.

Her eyes focused on Zephyraes's face. She looked so hurt. So lost. Broken. Without a second thought, she ran her fingers slowly across her cheek, mesmerized by how soft the fur was despite how dingy it looked. A soft sigh escaped her lips, carrying with it the breath she hadn't known she'd been holding.

The last droplets of water slid from her feathers, splashing loudly onto her companion's face. With a soft rustle, she folded her wings, draping them over them both. Quietly, she sat with Zeph's head propped on her lap, stroking her hair, watching over her with loving care.

The moment of the first cough, her heart leapt. "Zeph? Zephyraes?" Cupping her paws, she held the other female's face, tears welling in her eyes, leaving dark tracks on her cheeks as they fell. More stirring, and her heart squeezed in her chest. "Yes, that's it, come back to me." When her eyes finally focused, Cerys felt she would be the next to faint.

"You are at the hot spring, dear," she whispered, a small smile struggling at her lips.

"Hot springs?" Zephyraes croaked in confusion. "How did I get here?"

Cerys's form blocked the sunlight and for that Zeph was grateful, as her eyes were still adjusting to the light. It took her a couple seconds to realize where her head was. She colored immediately and tried to get up, but her head swam and Zeph decided that it probably wasn't a smart idea. She weakly wiped the water that glistened in her fur, felt the grime that was caked there. She needed a bath. Desperately.

But she was comfortable where she was. Cerys's fur was soft and warm and smelled good. But a small part in the back of Zeph's mind told her that she was disgusting and dirty, and that she was, by extension, transferring her filth onto the Goddess who held her.

So Zephyraes tried to sit up again, and while she did manage to stay upright, her head did that swimming thing again. She struggled to her feet, her legs wobbling, and plopped herself into the hot springs with a large splash and without her usual grace. She sunk to the bottom for a moment before resurfacing slowly like an alligator or crocodile. She blew bubbles contentedly for a moment then leaned back onto a sun warmed rock that jutted out of the water.

"When was the last time I ate?" Zeph mumbled to herself. She honestly couldn't remember. That would account for most of the weakness. The rest of it she was quickly hiding in a dark corner of her mind. Thinking of Sei wasn't going to help her, so Zeph pushed her from her mind. Denial would be a blessed release from the pain.

Zeph cocked an eye at Cerys. She onced the other other Goddess over and felt warmth grow in her belly; the long forgotten feeling of attraction to another of her species. Cerys was very beautiful, and Zeph couldn't remember the last time she actually looked at another Goddess with unbridled appreciation. It was sexual and pure at the same time. Like a first kiss, sweet and innocent, but with strong undercurrents, promises of more to come. It was intoxicating and completely pain causing. She'd felt that way once. And this was the result. Zeph forced the feelings down.

"Why are you here Cerys?" She asked curiously. "Don't mistake my directness for ingratitude, but we're not even friends. We barely know each other. Why help me?"
PostPosted: Thu May 05, 2011 12:24 pm

"How?" Cerys echoed, "Well... I found you a short while ago. That way," she lifted a paw and pointed back in the direction they'd come, "we established that you needed care, and so we came."

She sat back, still cradling her companion's head, as she waited for her to process that information. A moment later, she watched as a flush of colour spread like wild fire over her cheeks and she tried to sit up. "Careful, dear, careful," she murmured, helping to support her as she lowered herself back onto her lap. "You just fainted, Zephyraes; you should take things slowly for a moment."

As they sat, Cerys gently combed her nails through Zeph's hair, dislodging the worst of the mats and tangled, as she hummed a soft tune. She honestly didn't care that the other Goddess was filthy. She only cared that she was safe and okay. Though, the more she thought about it, the more she was sure that the other was far from okay.

After a moment, she watched as Zeph sat up. Instinctively, she moved a bit closer. The last thing she wanted was for her to pass out or faint again; she'd nearly given her a heart attack the first time. It seemed, though, that she was all right for the time being. Slowly, she relaxed, not expecting her next moves to be so... jerky.

The splash from the spring showered her with warm droplets of water, pulling a small laugh from her as she reached up to pull her ribbon from her curls. Carefully folding the silk, she watched as Zeph blew little bubbles. She laughed delicately again as she bent to tuck the neatly folded ribbon into a piece of her corset. Smiling, she shook her head, flinging excess water around her, as she lifted a paw to pat at the damp curls.

"The last time you ate? I honestly don't know, darling," she turned her soft crimson eyes to the other Goddess, that soft smile still on her lips as she lowered her paw. "Once you finish up here, though, I'm going to make you whatever your heart desires. If I can manage it, that is," she chuckled.

She then reached into a small bag she kept at the springs, pulling out a comb and a small bottle of a thick pinkish liquid. "I made this myself. Well," she blushed, amending herself, "Lilura helped me. She used some kind of magic herb that makes it smell differently to every person." She sat both things on the rocks between them.

She began to turn in order to give her a bit of privacy and faltered. The questions had caught her off guard, and for a moment, she was speechless. "Wh-why? Zephyraes, do I really need a reason? I helped you because I could see that you needed it. Not all people are self-centered, my darling."

Zeph stared as Cerys tossed her head about, letting her curls bounce up and down. And stared. And stared some more. Watched her tuck the ribbon into her corset. And nearly lost it. The Goddess plunged her head beneath the water again, out of sheer embarrassment. Bouncing curls. Cute Goddess. Zeph decided that she might never come up, content to just stay under the water for a while. But she didn't feel like dying, not at least in front of this exquisite creature. So she popped back up, in front of Cerys and sniffed at the liquid in her paws, as if she hadn't just been embarrassed or tried to semi-commit suicide from said embarrassment.

"Really? Because you could have fooled me. And you wouldn't have been the first," She bit her lip and tried to keep the cynicism out of her voice. Not too damaged and broken to be polite, Zephyraes. She scolded herself.

Besides, Cerys's paws had be comforting, and Zeph couldn't deny that what she wanted most in this world was the contact of someone who wasn't a family member. She wanted to feel something again, to not be dead inside. Maybe she was using Cerys as an escape. Maybe it would just end up hurting them both. The practical Zephyraes said that she should march her little Goddess butt out of the hot springs and find a way home so that Shei could feed and clean her up. No soft gentle paws that made Zeph want to roll over and expose her belly, no bouncing curls that were perfect to be swatted at playfully. No deep caring eyes in which Zeph could swear she saw more than just friendly concern. Not a mouth that begged for a thousand and one kisses to be stolen.

She was selfish. Seimei had made her incredibly selfish. Created a monster, had let it build up and take over, stroked its ego and let it loose on the world. The good part of the Goddess didn't want to take. But that was the part Sei had taken. This selfish creature was all that was left. And so Zephyraes lost the last bit of her dignity, and curled up in Cerys's arms.

"You can go back to cleaning me," she murmured. "It felt nice. Who is Lilura?" She sniffed the bottle again. "Smells like a cold north breeze."
