This is one of mah favorites. The story is too awesome for words. Which is unfortunate, because words are all I have here. Well, pics, too. Anyway! Major spoilers to follow! I recommend that you read on, though. Why? It'll be difficult for you to play all the games. So I'll try and share the LoK mythos the best way I can.

--Important People--

Kain
Began life as a human nobleman, sojourning across Nosgoth for reasons unknown or unremembered by me. Unbeknownst to him, he was marked from birth as a future member of the Circle of Nine--the new Balance Guardian. More on them later. As Kain passed through a town for a quick respite from his travels, he was attacked and killed by a band of robbers. With his dying breath, he swore revenge on his murderers. Mortanius, the Death Guardian, offered him the chance to do just that, by binding his soul in mid-transit to the underworld. The result was a Nosgothic vampire. Using his newfound powers, Kain began his petty vengeance. His first onset of bloodlust satisfied, Kain was compelled by fate to fulfill his purpose as the Balance Guardian.

Raziel
Was originally a Sarafan warrior priest; the Sarafan were a group of religious zealots who sought to eliminate the plague of vampirism from Nosgoth--whether the vampires fought back or not. He was murdered by a mysterious phantom and entombed, long before the human Kain would be born. Decades after his death, Raziel (along with the other dead Sarafan priests) would be resurrected by the yet-young vampire Kain, to serve as his first son. Having no memory of his human life, Raziel willingly served his sire.

Now, then...the vampires of Nosgoth go through profound evolutionary changes every century or so. They lose a bit more of their humanity, and gain more monstrous features instead. After a thousand years of this, Raziel finally had the honor of showing a change before his master: he was gifted with a set of strong, skeletal wings. In a jealous rage, Kain tore the bones from Raziel's wings, and threw him into The Abyss. Once he reached the Underworld, Raziel found himself still alive. His vampirism forgotten, he emerged as a demonic soul-eating wraith, bent on revenge.

The Elder
Believes himself to be God, and has spent millenia gathering followers under this pretense. He is actually an immense squid-like demon and parasite, perpetually shifting between realms. He orchestrates much of what goes on in the LoK universe, in order to feed his insatiable hunger for life.

Moebius
The most loyal of the Elder's followers. He is completely unaware of his master's true nature. Moebius is the first and last human Guardian of Time. He acts as a mouthpeice for his master, manipulating Kain and Raziel into the Elder's fate-touched pawns.

Vorador
The first human to recieve the dark gift of the ancient vampire race. Designed, forged, and enchanted the Soul Reaver sword.
Fought against the humans throughout Nosgoth's history, and slaughtered the entire Circle of Nine at one time, only to be captured and murdered by a resurrected Moebius.

The Ancients
A race of servants to the one true God. For millenia, they ruled peacefully over the humans. They waged a war against their monstrous counterparts, the demonic Hylden. Using their race's most powerful magicks, they constructed the Pillars of Nosgoth to seal their enemies away in another plane of reality. Realizing that their end was near, the Hylden countered with some magic of their own. They cursed the Ancients with bloodthirst, thus creating the first vampires. The Ancients retained much of their angelic appearance, but were horrified at the thought of feeding from the humans' blood. Now immortal, they were also cut off from the flow of life and death, and were unable to return to God.

The Circle of Nine
Nine men and women...one for each Pillar, representing an element revered by the ancients: Time, Death, Mind, Nature, Conflict, Dimension, Balance, States, and Energy. The first circle were the nine Ancients who forged the Pillars. After the suicides of the distraught vampires, fate called to nine humans to replace them as Guardians. By the machinations of the Elder, the new Balance Guardian, Ariel, was cruelly murdered. Upon discovering her mangled and desecrated corpse, Nupraptor, the Mind Guardian and her lover, lost his mind at the sight. Since they nine were linked psychically, Nupraptor's insanity infected the other remaining Guardians, corrupting the pillars. At the instant of Ariel's death, her power and title were passed on to a newborn Kain. Fate conspired to bring Kain to the circle after getting his revenge. Since he was now a vampire, Kain was able to restore the order of the Pillars forged by vampires. One by one, he and Vorador slaughtered the insane members of the Circle, allowing the corruption to fade away as new Guardians sprang up to replace the ones killed. The final act to repair the damaged seal of the Pillars was for the last Guardian to die. To satisfy the magic, Kain had to commit suicide as the Balance Guardian. Kain refused the sacrifice. The Pillars broke and fell, and the spell was broken, releasing the demonic Hylden once more. They infected bloodline of the vampires of the day, transforming them into monsters. Kain was the last true vampire left. And so, he re-created Raziel and his brothers to serve as the new generation of vampire lords. After milennia of Kain reigning ing hell, and the near-extinction of the human race, Raziel was sent by agents of fate to divert Kain's tainted destiny, and repair the damage once more.

The Sarafan
A cabal of human priests, in service to the human Circle of Nine. They hate all things demonic and vampiric, and will not hesitate to destroy any that they come across. They ruled over the peasantry of Nosgoth with an iron fist, until they were all slaughtered by a mysterious ghoul, while Vorador killed the Circle themselves.

Janos Audron
The last living Ancient. Waited for eons to present a very special object to the secret tenth member of the Nine. The Sarafan have spent their lives telling the world that he is a monster, but he is actually quite benevolent, and is only seeking to serve the greater good of Nosgoth.

The Blood Reaver
An enchanted sword forged by Vorador of bone, carbon, and a secret alloy of steel. It has the ability to draw in the blood of the enemies attacked with it, and channel it into magical energy for the weilder's use. It was forged for one reason alone: to be used by Raziel to realign Kain's skewed destiny.

The Soul Reaver
When the Blood Reaver absorbs the blood of a certain individual, it will meld with the same's soul to be released as a new weapon entirely. It is the key to fate's lock, and plays the most important role in restoring Nosgoth.

The Wraith Blade
In the first battle between Kain and Raziel, the solid blade of the Soul Reaver is broken upon striking Raziel. The impact destroyed his body as well, and his spirit faded into the spectral realm. There he was greeted by the very soul that the Reaver contained, still bound to a blade-like form. As Raziel touched the shimmering soul, it bound itself to him in a symbiotic coil, the two souls wrapped around each other permanently. From that point onward, Raziel carried it with him, unlocking the doors to restore Kain's destiny. At one point during a trip into the past, Raziel finds that Moebius can seal the blade away, unusable. So Raziel takes up the Blood Reaver, given him by Janos Audron, and uses it to break into the Sarafan's fortress, where they hide with the tainted Circle. As Vorador does his dark deed on young Kain's behalf, Raziel realizes the true identity of the Sarafan's mysterious killer. It is none other than he. He impales his human self, and the Blood Reaver's enchantment is fully released as it drinks in his blood. It then moves on its own to impale the time-traveling Raziel, in an attempt to force him into his fate as its new soul. He is surprisingly rescued by Kain in the last instant, who keeps the partially-aroused Blood Reaver for himself.

--Rough Timeline and History--

(the games never give any dates, so this will be very, very rough. It's more an outline than timelin. But here goes, any way: )

Chronological
-The Ancients seal away the Hylden, and are cursed with bloodthirst as the first vampires.
-Vorador forges the Blood Reaver, as part of an effort to foil the Elder's plans of controlling Nosgoth's fate.
-Ancients begin recruiting and turning humans to be the new Guardians of the Pillars.
-Vampire prophets fill their domiciles and temples with murals depicting the advent of two champions, representing the Hylden and the Ancients.
-The Death Guardian Mortanius, under the spiritual possession of a wayward Hylden spirit (called Hash'ak'gik, and the only one strong enough to defy the Pillars' seal,) murders Ariel, and tipping the balance of fate.
-Nupraptor discovers her and goes insane, taking the rest of the Guardians with him into his downward spiral.
-Kain becomes the new Balance Guardian, and will retain this title until the end.
-The Sarafan are recruited by the deranged Circle.
-The pristine, white Pillars turn black with corruption while incarnations of Kain and Raziel from the future watch helplessly.
-Janos Audron continues to watch and wait for the champion of his people's prophecies to arrive and become the tenth member of the Circle of Nine
-Janos Audron meets the wraith Raziel during his visit to the past.
-Raziel is revealed to be one of the champions of the prophecy, but Janos is not sure which one he is.
-The Sarafan, led by Raziel's human self, arrive to do battle. Janos Audron sends the future Raziel away, and is murdered by the past Raziel, and his heart is taken from his chest
-Moebius becomes the mouthpeice of the Elder and arranged for Kain's downfall, as he knows and fears the man's destiny
-The human Kain is murdered, and is greeted in the Underworld by the still-possessed Mortanius.
-Mortanius implants in Kain the heart of the murdered Janos Audron, without Kain's knowledge.
-Kain murders prominent members of the Circle, partially restoring balance.
-Vorador kills the rest
-Raziel takes up the Blood Reaver and uses it to kill the Sarafan while Vorador fights off the Circle. Only Moebius escapes.
-Raziel fades into the spectral realm, where the Elder waits. His method of returning to the material realm is cut off. There, he is forced to "clean up" the Underworld by cleansing it of wayward spirits. He remains there for centuries.
-Kain of the future fights his way out of the Sarafan stronghold, and begins a journey through his past, in an attempt to unravel the mystery of his destiny.
-Raziel(f) learns a new way to break out of the spectral realm, and does so to escape.
-They journey together, the wraith blade and Blood Reaver in their hands, and discover the secrets covered up by the Hylden.
-Kain of the past does battle with William the Just, the tyrannical monarch of Nosgoth. Both are armed with time-twinned duplicates of the Soul Reaver. William's Reaver breaks and is later restored by the time-traveling Raziel.
-Raziel(f) and Kain(f) do battle, and Raziel gains the upper hand. He tears out Janos Audron's heart from Kain's chest, and returns it to its owner, who is immediately restored to life.
-Hash'Ak'Gik possesses Janos, and uses him in the Hylden's plot. He is transformed into a monstrous animal and used to power the machines of the Hylden.
-Raziel(f) discovers that he and Kain(f) both are champions of the vampires. He reaffirms his loyalty to his former master, and allows himself to become the new wraith blade, completing the circle of fate, and completing the Soul Reaver. The former wraith blade bonds with Kain, now. He is no longer a vampire, but a new creature designed to restore Nosgoth.
-Hash'Ak'Gik has taken physical form and taken control of the Sarafan. He begins his war on the vampires, and begins turning the wheels of the Elder's plan to release the rest of the Hylden.
-Kain(p) refuses the sacrifice, and Nosgoth is damned.
-Kain(f) watches as the Pillars fall.
-Kain(f) battles the Elder, and beats him back into the Underworld.
-At some point, Kain(f) meets Kain(p). They battle, and the Soul Reaver is captured by Kain(p.) The whereabouts of Kain(f) are unknown.
-Kain(p) loses the Reaver, as well. It is taken up by Hash'Ak'Gik.
-After a two hundred year slumber, Kain(p) defeats Hash'Ak'Gik and takes back the Reaver. He, as the last vampire, rules over Nosgoth alone for an unknown period of time before creating sons from the corpses of the slaughtered Sarafan priests, starting with Raziel.
-Raziel rules as his right-hand for a thousand years before growing wings. Kain rips them apart and throws Raziel into the Abyss, not of jealousy, but because he believes fate demands it. He has come to regret his decision to damn Nosgoth, and now seeks a way to fix it.
-Centuries later, Raziel re-emerges as a wraith, and seeks Kain out. They meet and battle, and the Soul Reaver is broken upon Raziel's back.
-Kain departs, knowing that his work is done for the time being. Raziel takes up the wraith-blade, not knowing that it is his own time-twinned soul.
-Raziel kills each of his former vampire brethren, who have all taken beastly forms due to the rampant corruption of Nosgoth. Only Kain and the remaining humans are unaffected. Ironically, he will later travel back in time to murder them each a second time in their human forms.
-Originally, Raziel was fated to kill Kain upon their second meeting, and combine his soul with that of the Wraith-Blade. He would then use it as a key to unlock the Silent Cathedral, a human super-weapon capable of destroying all vampires. With Kain dead, the Pillars would have been restored right then.
-The machinations of Hash'Ak'Gik, Moebius, and the Elder have erased that event from Raziel's future. Instead, Kain travels back through time, to an age just before his human self is born.
-Raziel gives chase.
-This is the latest relevant event. It is unknown if Kain succeeds in his attempt to repair the damage he did millennia ago.

lol it's missing some pieces. I'll finish it later. Also, it's out of order due to frequent time travel.

--Raziel's Story--

Raziel began life as a human nobleman, excelling at sword combat. Not long after coming of age, he would go on to join the ranks of the vampire-hating Sarafan.

Together with his comrades, Melchiah, Zephon, Rahab, Dum'ah, and Turel, Raziel leads the vast armies of the Sarafan to all-but eliminate the "plague" of vampirism. Only two remain alive--the last of the Ancients, Janos Audron, and the very first human-turned-vampire, Vorador. At long last, the Circle of Nine direct the Sarafan, and they soon discover Janos' stronghold.

Raziel himself slays the Ancient, tearing his heart from his chest, and stealing the Blood Reaver as trophies to take back to their stronghold. Shortly thereafter, Vorador and a second mysterious figure appear to avenge Janos Audron. While Vorador fights off and then slaughters the entirety of the Nine, his dark compatriot tracks down and destroys the six highest-ranking Sarafan warriors.

In a coup de grace, the creature saves Raziel for last, impaling him upon the Blood Reaver it had stolen from the Sarafan vaults. Moments afterward, a third, previously unknown vampire arrives to take the Blood Reaver and abscond with it as the mysterious wraith disappears into thin air.

Centuries later, the young vampire Kain would discover the tomb of the vampire's most hated nemeses in their history--the six Sarafan priests. In a delicious twist of cruel irony, Kain used his powerful vampiric gifts to give flesh and new life to the old bones. Raziel, Melchiah, Zephon, Rahab, Dum'ah, and Turel are born again as vampires one-by-one, with no memory of their lives as humans.

For a thousand years, they spread their dark seed, and managed to subjugate nearly all of the Nosgothic world. One day, true to the new vampire breed's nature, Raziel goes through an evolutionary stage, as his kind often do every decade or so.

Instead of mirroring one of his master Kain's existing powers or characteristics as normal, Raziel expressed a new change before his sire: a set of skeletal wings. Upon presenting this change to Kain, Raziel is shocked and horrified when Kain tears the new wings off in a fit of jealousy.

As further punishment for this "insult," Kain commands Turel and Dum'ah to cast Raziel into the Lake of the Dead, which swirls about a portal to the Underworld.

Waking up to find that he still lived some way, Raziel discovered that his new body, though frail and decrepit, exhibited immense superhuman strength and augmented vampiric powers. His bloodthirst had been replaced by a darker need: the appetite for freshly liberated souls.

The Elder speaks to him, and convinces Raziel that he spared him. In reality, Raziel's unique nature is what prevented his soul from returning to the Wheel of Fate.

Raziel then embarks on a quest with his newfound powers, killing his former brethren one at a time and absorbing their dark gifts (Melchiah's ability to phase through solid matter; Zephon's ability to cling spiderlike to any surface; Rahab's resistance to the vampire's weakness to water; Dum'ah's ability to concentrate and direct concussive energy.)

After tracking down Kain, Raziel is defeated in battle, and attacked with the Soul Reaver, an upgraded version of the Blood Reaver. The blade breaks upon touching Raziel's flesh, revealing that a deranged, chaotic ancient soul is its core. Raziel and this soul touch, and the core of the Reaver attaches itself to him as the Wraith Blade.

Thus armed, Raziel follows and confronts Kain in the derelict Sarafan stronghold, in the chambers of the last, long-dead human Time Guardian, Moebius. They do battle, and Raziel wounds his former master. Not wishing to continue the fight as such, Kain activates Moebius' ancient time machine, the Chronoplast.

The two tumble through the timestream, to emerge in the era of Moebius' last crusade against the vampires. The Sarafan are long dead, and the armies of Moebius fight in honor of the six who fell after the killing of Janos Audron.

Raziel finds that the device is now inoperable, and Kain has fled. Exploring the old, still-lush and beautiful Nosgoth as it was before Kain destroyed it in his future takeover, Raziel begins unlocking the secrets of the ancient world, and discovers that he and Kain are both a part of something much larger than either of them could imagine.

Finally, Raziel finds Kain at the Pillars of Nosgoth, and the two exchange words, but do not fight. Kain reveals that he has been the new Balance Guardian since his birth, and Raziel looks upon the Pillars in perfect condition for the first time. In the next instant, the two witness the Pillars crack, break, and turn black with corruption. The Mind Guardian has discovered his lover dead, and gone insane. He has spread his infection to the remaining guardians as well.

Kain goes on to explain that somewhere, miles away, his human self has just been born to replace the newly-dead Balance Guardian, Ariel. Raziel leaves the Pillars and speaks to Vorador, and explores the ruins around Vorador's domicile. Murals created by the ancient vampires depict a power struggle, and Raziel begins to realize that somehow, he is a major part of it.

He leaves to return to the Sarafan stronghold to find the Soul Reaver laid across the tomb of King William the Just, a nemesis of a much younger, time-traveling Kain. The incarnation of Kain that Raziel has been chasing is here, waiting. Raziel takes it up, and is presented with a choice: Kill Kain now, and restore balance, but leave the secret plot of Moebius in motion, or wait a while to see how things play out.

Raziel, to everyone's shock (particularly Kain's) spares his former master's life, and departs the stronghold by way of a second Chronoplast. He arrives 100 years in the future to discover that the vampires have been very nearly driven to extinction once more, but not by Moebius or the Sarafan; a race of hideous extra-dimensional beings have torn their way into Nosgoth and done the deed themselves.

They speak to Raziel by name, and seem to have intimate knowledge of the goings-on of Nosgoth, in regards to the corruption of the Pillars and Kain's fate.

Finally managing to escape, Raziel uses a third Chronoplast to travel back to the age of the Sarafan: the very time of his forgotten human life.

Horrified by what he and his brethren did to the benevolent Janos Audron, and shocked to find that all the old stories about the man were completely fabricated, Raziel chases the Sarafan to their stronghold, and slaughters the whole of them with the Blood Reaver, which he stole back from his human self.

Vorador arrives as well, and kills nearly all of the Circle of Nine for revenge, and the time-traveling Kain sneaks into the stronghold, now following Raziel.

Realizing that he was the mysterious murdering phantom of the legends, Raziel renounces his human nature, and murders his past incarnation last. As his human blood touches the Reaver's blade, the enchantment upon the sword is activated, and it attempts to merge with the soul of the phantom Raziel.

He is spared in the last instant as Kain grasps the hilt of the Blood Reaver, and tears it out of Raziel's broken body. Raziel fades from physical existence to return to the spectral Underworld, where the Elder waits to enslave him.

After centuries of serving the parasite that thought itself God, Raziel escapes from the clutches of the Elder, and returns to the world of the living, seeking the heart of Janos Audron, in hopes of restoring the dead Ancient.

He eventually discovers that the heart was used by Mortanius, the Guardian of Death, to turn Kain into an artificial vampire, at the beginning of his life. Raziel seeks Kain out, and finds him in Avernus Cathedral, a former haven for vampires.

He and Kain battle, and Raziel manages to tear the heart from Kain's chest, in exactly the same manner that his human self tore it from Janos. He travels to Vorador's estate and returns the heart to its owner.

Janos takes Raziel to the place where he must fulfill his destiny: the city of the Ancients. At the center of the complex, there is a spiritual forge intended for Raziel's use. He activates the device, and the souls of all former Balance Guardians are drawn from the Underworld to Raziel and absorbed by his Wraith Blade.

The blue glow is replaces by a white light as the vampiric element of Balance transforms the weapon into a new creation: the Spirit Reaver. Raziel realizes its true purpose, and reveals that he has always been the soul at the core of the Reaver. He tricks a resurrected Kain into impaling him upon the Blood Reaver, by possessing the murdered body of Moebius. The body realigns itself to take Raziel's form, and Kain tries desperately to undo what he has done.

Raziel refuses, and forgives Kain for what he did at the end of Raziel's vampire life. He reaffirms his loyalty to Kain, stating that had always been and would always be Kain's right hand--his sword.

Kain reveals that it was not jealousy that motivated his actions, but fatalism. He had Raziel killed because it had to be done to set things in motion to restore Nosgoth. In fact, Kain implies that it hurt him to have to perform such a horrible act against his own son.

With his dying breath, Raziel tells Kain he is free to fulfill his true destiny, and passes the Spirit Reaver on to Kain. The time-twinned soul of the blade combines with Kain's incomplete vampire soul, to create a new being, fit to restore Nosgoth.

Raziel himself is merged with the Blood Reaver, creating the Soul Reaver. Thus his story ends.
