Mishiko's room is completely decked out like a cave-because it is a cave. The walls are made of stone which is now smooth from use and curve into the ceiling and floor. The floor is perfectly flat and level while the walls and ceiling have a curve to them. The stone her room is constructed of is dark grey and from a volcano. The ceiling is actually rather tall and usually lost to shadow far above. At equal intervals, "chimneys" run up through the rock and out into open air. The largest chimney goes to the fire pit which is the only area of the floor not level.
Since Mishiko is such a hothead(pun completely intended), her manipulation of fire is limited. She is only allowed so much in her room and her room alone. The only exception is in the unlikely chance that the Kitsunes' home is invaded. Due to her limitations, Mishiko is forced to make do with a great deal of candles and a fire pit. The fire pit is lined with sand and ash and has a removable iron barrier in order to assuage her guests. Generally, Mishiko keeps it to the side and out of her way. Around the cave at certain vantage points are clusters of at least 10 candles. The vantage points were chosen to spread the light equally and to allow their smoke to leave the cave as quickly as possible. Towards the front of the clusters, the candles are shorter than the back. But they are not surrounded by wax.
The fire pit is located at the exact center of the cave and has a diameter of three feet. It is about three feet deep. The rest of the cave is furnished with tatami mats. Close to the entrance is a low table where Mishiko typically socializes with guests, writes, or uses her computer. The use of this table is usually considered a courtesy because it is closest to the door and thus the coolest place in the cave. More serious or personal matters are discussed around the fire. Mishiko’s bed mat is on the opposite side of the fire against the wall. Her bed mat is located in a very shallow alcove no more than seven feet deep. It is just big enough to form a three-sided bowl around her. Mishiko’s bed mat is unusually thick and rests atop a soft layer of sand. Another unusual feature: it is round and curves up with the walls. In truth, there is one more depression in the cave floor and it is Mishiko’s sleeping hollow. It too is three feet lower.
There are several alcoves which branch off from the main cave. They all turn in on themselves which hides their contents. One such alcove is actually a tunnel which leads to another cave directly below the main one. This cave is always cool so Mishiko uses it as a refrigerator. Another alcove is used to store extra cushions, sand and candles. The third and final alcove is devoted entirely to firewood.
