We need to think of ways to eliminate players from the Main Contest based on their OCs.

First of all we'd be having a standardised application form with a question or two thrown in for more depth.

Then the obvious methods we have at our disposal are more questions, scenarios, puzzles, events and rule-driven games.

This thread is to discuss the above methods and think of new ones. Players are judged on whether their OCs are interesting, fleshed out well, etc. This is not to be confused with the RP events, where players are judged on their RP skills.

We can try to incorporate some ideas from Woe in this thread.

Heya, Im here to make trouble! I mean continue the discussion Hee.

Basically, I feel strongly that the contest should have judges. Maybe people you trust from Legends, or the people here who you trust. I don't trust myself to be unbiased, I mean I even let my biases decide how I feel about authors for pete's sake. And also, I really want to be a part of the excitement of wondering who is going to move on to the next round, and judging takes that part away and turns it into stress, haha!

Even if it has judges though, there can definitely be very creative events to display characters. Even as eventful as rp combat or other confrontational issues. The basic idea is:

Each round characters compete and may lose the scenario/setting/challenge, but the judges still judge the characters by the way they behaved in the competition.

So, if we had a competition (theoretically here) for round three, which involved two teams doing some kind of survivor type rp, even if the character was eliminated during the rp, the judges would still decide what they felt about the character, and they could move on to the next round, regardless of whether they 'won'. After all, sometimes the best characters are the ones that lose, right?

From OOC, what I felt worked:
1- the application (although it should be standardized, which we all agreed on earlier).
Eliminate like a percentage and move on the others.
2- The questionaire
People filled out a set questionnaire regarding their character. I felt these were fun to read and gave a lot of information about the characters, their philosophies, their goals etc. I believe it also sparked the most highly charged debate about who should move forward in the judging panel.

What I wished I had:
Something more dramatic, like a final combat, or pitting the players against each other in an RP situation or some other challenge. I had intended to have Dar'Shuvere attack and the players go against him, but I was tired (like Ive said haha!) and I was also nervous about it being accepted by the players.

Also, I wanted to make sure I didnt focus too much on RP skill as a way to display the character... but then in hindsight, what other way would there be really?

What other ways could the characters be showcased without way too much work on the part of each player and judges reading or interacting is what we need to think of now.

Judging:
For the first round, due to the potentially large number of applicants, I was thinking of staff doing a vote on their least favourites. This would be quick, as it's easier to choose dislikes. The next few rounds could be by a panel of judges, ie people I trust here, to speed things up.

For the very last round, I'd like all the interested staff to do a quick top 12 vote (hence optional if you'd rather wait in suspense) to determine the final standings. This reduces bias and gets everyone involved.

Rounds:
Yup, we should do some sort of survivor type event, using the Technomagination talisman thing with Woe's idea, and judge on performance rather than who 'won'. Since this isn't real life Mafia, after elimination they still don't know who the thieves are, meaning they can discuss with those still in the game.

A dramatic final combat scenario sounds awesome. It'd probably have to be done over 2 weeks to give players time to respond? Real combat-style RP shouldn't be required, more like giving them the situation and they make their choices.

Quote:
Example:
The Unholy Contraption of Hullabaloo has risen! It rears its ugly mechanical head and points its twin doom eye lasers at the gathered group. The faction leaders rally their men (including you recruits!) and issue out various commands.

You have the choice of:
Rushing for the teensy legs the machine is running on.
Taking cover behind some wall.
Standing your ground and aim any weapon you've got at it.
Sing a heroic song to bolster morale!

When making your choice, please write a line or two, describing why you made it, how you intend to do it, and anything that you feel necessary.

Players then make their decisions in thread, an outcome occurs and a next challenge follows. To avoid players making the biggest impact, we have the faction leaders (owned by us admin) drive the main action.
Quote:

Continuation of Example:
While the majority of you cower like the pansy arses you all are, XXX jumps into action and clambers on top of the machine, distracting its laser while the others plant explosives on its legs. Boom! goes its legs and as it topples down, a countdown sequence is initiated.

Do you:
Help your leader disarm the possible self-destruct mechanism?
Rally everyone to safety?
Laugh at your impending doom?

And so on so forth till it's complete and we have enough data to judge on. Players have the option of RPing it out, or just writing their thoughts like how you had it in OOC.

But yeah, I can't really think of methods to avoid a lot of reading and interaction...yet sweatdrop

:3 Really like it Thorn! heart I LOVE the technomagination stuff, I think that is really a nice touch, and immediatly sets up to show off who and how the players can be creative.

How many rounds are we potentially going to have? I think we said four in another thread, but sticking to it?

Round one works, simple and easy. And I think the way you have the action set up is pretty perfect for dramatic RP events. That way not too much is decided by RP quality... or at lease give those without a lot of writing skills a way to show what their character would do.

But do you think it will be ok for players who don't RP much? And will it still display the characters more in depth for those who dont? I think you have a great idea of showcasing specific characters and forcing others to respond to the actual scenario, should help keep things from being chaotic or from some characters going overboard.

Also, maybe it will be too long... I think we should try hard to make the events timely, especially since we have to wait for the judges to submit decisions before moving on to open the next round.

I was just using the survivor idea theoretically cause someone posted it in the RP thread somewhere and It seemed like a good example to use. It sounds complicated, but Im sure you can make it work and it would be really fun!

Do you want to drop the questionnaire round or morph it into a more creative way to delve the character?

I would still like to see some event/round/competition where the player has to make up something new about their character incorporated into the round. /thinking still.
