User Image They’d both been battered after they’d downed that wild young buck. Zale’s chest had been battered and bruised, and a hood had put a shallow cut down Dimah’s side. However, well fed, the bruises had been quick to heal, and the cut had closed before it could begin to get that sickly smell. It was becoming apparent, however, that Dimah’s traveling companion was less than skilled as a hunter. Not wanting to bicker, she didn’t mention it and tried to give more explicit orders when they were closing on prey. Besides, she liked knowing that he could listen as well as talk. She might have thought him a bit daft otherwise, despite his knowledge about the spirits.

She awoke with her nose tucked against his side to protect her face from the cold. Snuffing and yawning, she drew away from the bank of dark fur and squinted at the pale evening light winking through the trees. They should be on their way soon, and the soft sound of a songbird roosting in the trees promise the night would be profitable. Dimah blinked heavily at the trees and slope of the ground rolling away. She yawned, glanced about slowly, and tucked her face back against Zale’s side, flicking her tail to cover her legs.

A traveling companion, the attention of a lovely female, the respect of a gullible follower and the skills of an experienced hunter: Zale found all these things and more in Dimah, and life was good. How fortunate that he found her. Zale was not the type to wonder how he might have survived without her, he saw little use in thinking about what-might-have-been, but he had the sense that if not for his insight into the 'spirits' she would have no patience for him. Even that didn't bother him. He followed her commands religiously while hunting and was actually starting to develop a knack for tracking and stalking and did all he was willing to keep her happy. Dimah was useful and a pleasant companion, but he didn't need her approval.

Zale opened his eyes a fraction in time to see Dimah yawn. As she lay down again he snuggled close to her and rested his head on her shoulder, flicking his ears left to right and listening to the night. The 'spirits' seemed pleased.

Dimah curved her neck some, shifting to make them both more comfortable without thinking about. It was never really her intention to sleep against him like this, but it was usually the case she awoke to. She rarely did anything to resist her impulses anyway, and even now when she could have picked herself up and made ‘moving on’ a pretext to put some distance between them, she instead stayed put and tried to figure out why his smell was attractive. It wasn’t exactly good since they were usually hunting or making distance through the forest. Male, she decided. It was simply a male sent, unfairly enticing. It was also keeping her from drifting back to sleep.

She sighed. “Tired…” she complained groggily. “You awake?”
