While on one side of the coin LGBT schools offer a nonthreat environment where the students can feel more at ease, it also deprives them of real-world experience. Not everyone is going to be pro-homosexuality and maybe it is a bad idea to place children in an environment where there is no exposure to homophobia. What do you all think?

Hmm, interesting question. I've been thinking about this since I read Rainbow Road ^_^;; I read all the time, such a nerd. But oh well!! Anyway, I wonder often how different my life would be if I had been able to go to such a school. I mean, if my parents were more accepting and everything. I don't see what's so wrong with being g/l/b/t but I've be brought up to be taught it is and everything so I've had a bit of stress in my life (still do).
I think that the school's a good idea because by the time the kids are sure of themselves and their sexual identity and are going there, than I'm sure they've experienced some homophobia. And besides, I haven't seen much at my schools (though they don't know about my prefrences) other than the normal word shouting. And the calling my ipod gay but that's another weird story.
I've seen much more homophobic behavior when I've visited my friends or when my girlfriend and I used to go out. School isn't the real world as it is. I'm sure when the kids are out afterwards or on the weekends, they'll experience homophobic people. But these schools could help them be more comfortable with themselves and who they are and everything, so more power to them!!
Ooh, wow, I actually came to a conclusion. I didn't even have an opinion when I started writing this ^_^;; Thanks for making me think about it and write down my thoughts!!

It sounds good but I dunno if that is such a good idea. But imo I think it would be good in the long run for LGBT children to stay in public schools with the rest of the other children. We shouldn't have to shelter our kids from homophobia, instead we should be demanding thought and acceptance. I mean, I would hate to think that my kid would have to deal with teasing if they were LGBT, but that's life. We learn from the situations we face. Plus, I dont like the idea of seperating our kids and labeling them to make them seem even more different.
And I think this might be in the wrong fourm too. sweatdrop

I have a hard time with this one. I've thought it over alot and had a huge dicussion about it last year at GSA.
One problem to me is that what age would you start at? YOu can't start right away in elemtry school, its far to young. Middle school isn't that great of a idea either because of when it comes to purdity. And we all need that 'trama-drama' growing up no matter how hard it is.
GLBT high schools I think are a good idea, but hard to imagen. Mainly because of alot of up-tight parents I know. And how do you think it would feel like being a kid and coming up to your parents saying 'Mom, Dad, I want to go to a GLBT high school.' I would be scared s**t-less.
Collage, is another level of its own. It makes perfect sence. By then your 18 adult age and (In most sutituations) can chose yourself if you want to go to that collage or not.
What makes more sence is 'Gay friendly schools' but I don't know how that would work.
All in all, its a good idea, though it will be a long time, most likely not in my generation that this will happen. I would say it would at least take 2 or maybe even 3 generations after me for this country to be open enough for that.

I agree with you completely. The real world is there, yes. THat is undenible. But having confidence when going into the real world is always a plus. In fact, i think that the only problems would really be found in political situations in which now a conservative private school may declare the right to kick out a gblt student on the premisis that it is an all straight school.

I think it's a good idea. It will help to cut down on bullying, and give them a safer environment to study in. A safer environment will allow for harder concentration on studies. And, these school seem to be doing well in NYC, so I guess they've taken off pretty well.

I'm not sure it's such a good idea, I think haveing anti-homophobia/-the other word for homosexual hatrid that tulip found- rules in schools/collages are ok.
But I think a just LGBT school/collage could enforce the idea that LGBT people are diffrent, strange people that should be avoided and sepirated. Which is wrong. we should be teaching that LGBT and straight people are practically the same. We're all people.

extreme_velocity ...Ooh, wow, I actually came to a conclusion. I didn't even have an opinion when I started writing this ^_^;; Thanks for making me think about it and write down my thoughts!! I have had the exact same transformation (if I can use that word and I really don't think I can! xd ) with other threads. Especially on cruelty to animals. Whether or not pet-abuse should deserve the same prison-time as domestic abuse. Interesting topic.

neoncode But I think a just LGBT school/collage could enforce the idea that LGBT people are diffrent... Yes, I believe that myself. By intergrating LGBT and straight teens, schools are forcing everyone to face the facts: there are gay people in this world, get used to it. wink

And we will never be able to move foward if that happens.

AkureiKnight Oh I had a thought. They have certain all-(insert ethnic.. etc here) colleges. Maybe there could be an all LGBT college. 3nodding Yes, they exist, but they're a piss-poor idea. stare Honestly, I'm going to hav to go no on this one. Just because the school is only for LGBT teens, doesn't mean the homophobic twits aren't going to come just to be assholes. And, if one of them happens to be mentally unstable/have a gun or other weapon on him... I think you know where I'm going with this.

Further more, I don't think many parents would dish out money for that. Also, I feel that we should be with heterosexuals to help build tolerance. razz

I think that while it would pose a less stressful/prejudice environment, believe it or not it'd still be there. Gays/lesbians who say bi people are just stupid and indecisive etc. Also, it removes the possibility of the people who go there making friends with straight people who are perfectly open to friendships with another sexual orientation, which could deprive them of a meaningful relationship.
