I was in the store the other day and came across the new selection of Barbies. I was astonded , they are now trying to make cheap , poor quality ,non-stringed BJD knock offs. They do indeed have ball shaped joints in their shoulders , wrists , elbows, hips and even knees. And doing it wrong. I was just wondering what everybodys thoughts were about this. Matels new Barbies.

The new barbies actually remind me more of 1/6 Volks or obitsu. There are a few play lines in stores right now with jointed dolls like the Harujuku dolls and Liv dolls. Actually Liv doll are closer to a ABJD with all the wigs and accessories.

Personaly I think it's great that these doll exist. Young folk can get the same joy of "playing" with a possible doll with out the crazy price and danger of breakage.

I haven't seen any barbies lately but I know that this isn't new for them.. they've made barbies with different joints before, whether they were ball joints or not. I vaguely remember playing with jointed barbies when I was younger..

A friend in need's a friend indeed, a friend with weed is better,

I've had jointed Barbies, at least I remember the knees and elbows being jointed and I think I had one with the shoulders too. So this had to be in the 90s and 00s so it's not that new. I don't see it as a bad thing either, unless they're marketing them as "the new alternative to asian BJDs!"

I also had a jointed barbie when I was little, so the concept of joints+barbie isn't a new one.

I personally have no problem with it. I don't think any other kind of doll (jointed or not) can ever compete with ABJDs. I don't think we all love bjds solely because of their strung ball-joints. To me, the asian-aesthetic of the face and body is really important. You won't find that aesthetic on Barbie, or any other American doll. I just don't think the two are in the same league at all, regardless of joints.

I never liked barbies. My sister used to have a jointed one, and it would always pinch me.
D:
I have seen those Liv dolls, though. I think those are quite neat, although not as neat as real bjds.

I had a jointed barbie when I was little. She even had shoes that stuck to stuff. I was like Excersize Barbie or something like that. XDD

My sister and I both had jointed barbie dolls.

My friend and I both now own the Moxie Teen dolls, since they are a cheap version of what we drooled over the internet at.

The Moxie Teen has all the joints of an expensive doll, but less possiblity of breakage.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I collect many kinds of dolls and have more Barbies than any other type, and "ball joint Barbies" are nothing new. Mattel also made a type of "ball joint" doll called Spectra in the late 80s or early 90s. I only have a couple but they are quite lovely; you just have to be careful because their skin is painted over in metallics. There's a similar doll called "Aurora" that not only had ball joints and metallic skin, but rhinestones for eyes. The metallic paint tends to peel though, especially on the joints. :

I can recall ball jointed barbies as well and to my knowledge they had been around for a while. No they're not ABJD's but they are alright. I find that there are details I prefer more than Barbies. Interesting fact thought read somewhere yesterday Ball Joint dolls started somewhere in Germany first and branched out? Can't take it for sure though since it was on wikipedia and that's not too reliable these days. But yeah I don't care where they came from first as long as they're here now.

Are you talking about the "I Can Be..." line?

I look around at dolls in regular stores a lot. I've noticed a weird inconsistency in what joints are actually articulated in Barbies, even among entire lines.

Now, Monster High and the new Ever After stuff, those are very consistently articulated.

While they may have ball-joints, I usually just refer to them as "articulated" since "ball-jointed doll" refers to something so specific nowadays.

Barbies have had joined arms and legs way before Monster High Dolls. I remember having a jointed ballerina barbie, note I'm 22. So my assumption is now that jointed commercial dolls are so popular such as MH, they need the competitive edge for the market. Now I feel old haha,

I had a BJB (ball jointed barbie) when I was little. I am in my late 20s now. It was the first doll I had ever gotten but sadly my uncle ran it over with his truck and broke it... Afterwards I received my first porcelain doll and I have never had another barbie since.
