I was looking up information on the environment, and I came across the Ecological Footprint quiz. It asks you some questions about your lifestyle, and then tells you how many acres your lifestyle requires. After you finish the quiz, there are links to information on how to reduce your "footprint". I had a footprint of 12 acres- half the U.S. average, but not as low as it should be. The quiz can be found here: http://www.earthday.org/footprint/index.asp

It's alright, 16 acres is 8 acres better than the U.S. national average.

15 sad There isn't any public transportation in either of the places that I live. If there was, I would certainly utilize it. And I don't really have control over my housing arrangements at the moment... I'll need to work on things though.

14. I've not much of a choice as to what I eat, what type of car I get driven around in, and walking risks me killing my back with all of my books. (plus it's a bit far, a bit dark, and I live in a bad area. rolleyes )

HERE ARE YOUR FOOTPRINT RESULTS:
CATEGORY GLOBAL ACRES FOOD 3.2 MOBILITY 0.7 SHELTER 1.2 GOODS/SERVICES 1.2 TOTAL FOOTPRINT 6
IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 GLOBAL ACRES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXISTS 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL ACRES PER PERSON.
IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 1.4 PLANETS.
I'm 4 times less the country's average, which makes me rather happy. I usually walk or ride a bike to everywhere I go: school, the mall, houses, et cetera.

That's awesome, Devin!^_^ I scored a 13. I stand by my belief, though, that what we really need on this planet is fewer people- I have severe doubts about the possibility of scoring an idea ecological "footprint" relative to the number of people currently on the planet. There comes a point where our feet just won't fit into a shoe that small. sad

There comes a point where our feet just won't fit into a shoe that small. sad We certainly need fewer people, there is no doubt about that. Though 4.5 acres is really quite enough to support every person's needs, plus some. Though of course, we'd have to give up a lot of the luxuries that the developed world take for granted these days. Plus it's always good to have redundant land for wildlife, crop failures, etc. And I don't think it's practical to expect most people to want to live at that level. For one's necessities, a person can live on an acre, in my mild temperate climate. However, it would be a hard life, and only meeting your needs. Very few people willingly live that way. I personally think we are already way over the world's carrying capacity for humans, and I would be very surprised if there wasn't a severe reduction in the world's population in the coming centuries. A growth curve like the one humans have had has never been sustainable in any animal study, and has always come before a crash. We are not all that different from animals.
