*Sigh* I am not going to win this one due to the vast majority of trumpet players here, but here it goes!

See... I've been having an argument with someone in my band (lalan55) about whose instrument is better, French Horn (The obvious choice) or the Trumpet.

Honestly, being a Horn player myself, I choose French Horn, and one of the other reason is because the trumpet players in our band sound like a dying squirrel. All screechy and tense. The BD seems incredibly mad at them. We sound on center as according to her. So in our band, The French Horns are the obvious winner... but here is your answer to finally put our argument to rest! (Or maybe not...)

I play both. Personally, I like the trumpet better... But I will agree that the French Horn sounds better, when you can play it. However, I've never known a dude to score by showing off his mad skills on the French Horn. (On the other hand, I know a few Trumpet-whores.)

I play F Horn, not "French" Horn.

I've been told that the horn is the most ingenious instrument ever created for orchestral purposes.

The counter melodies written for the horn are positively amazing.

Trumpets can have the melody, I'll play something behind it that makes it sound more awesome.

Yeahhh.

Being a trumpet player, I am going to try not to be biased when it comes to this topic but here it goes.....

I think that it essentially comes down to who is playing the instrument. Our band has the third best french horn player in the state, and quite frankly when he plays, the horn makes one of the greatest sounds. Phantom of the Opera's Entr'acte where the french horn takes the melody Music of the Night, blows me away. However; when some kid picks up a french horn, and fails to play in tune (according to my director french horn, like oboe, is normally out of tune, and requires a great deal of skill to play in tune and use the hand properly to tune the horn), its painful. Luckily the first chair is terrific, the second chair is one of the best in the county, and the third and fourth chair, are spectacular as well (they dont go out for bands, our wind ensemble plays college level music, so the fact they can play the music, shows their skill). Overall I think French Horn's truely shine in an orchestra, when those gorgeous overtones come out of the beautiful sounds of the strings, goosebumps arrive on my skin immediately, its just an amazing instrument.

Trumpet on the other hand, shines in its own way. When the center of a tone is hit and the vibrato comes through, or even if its just a nice clear sound, its beautiful. Also when a real monster gets behind a trumpet, and screams, its an incredible sight. However, like with French Horn, the tone the player produces is EVERYTHING. For example, myself (not meant to brag, just an example), I have a large open full sound, developed over time through listening to recordings, and with help from my BD, which is typically desired on a trumpet. Then you get a beginner, or in your case, a closed up trumpet player, and the sound sounds like something of a dying donkey. When it comes to the trumpet, its the king of jazz, and you know when a trumpet starts swinging, its going to be pleasant (unless of course you have a dying donkey).

When everything is said and done I think Trumpet and French Horn CANNOT be thrown into a cage match. Can't be done. They are two equally awesome instruments, and behind the hands of the right player, are easily proof as to why they are kings of music in their own right, along with all other brass.

So I choose both?

I like both because, well, french horn is so mellow and beautiful. It has such a large range and seems to have the perfect counter-melodies, as someone else said. It seems to mirror the it amazingly.

However, trumpet can be equally as good, but I just never really liked trumpet because it was the first instrument I played, and I sucked. sweatdrop
Also I didn't really like trumpet because, the trumpets in my school band aren't very good, and they don't play with confidence, even the 1st's. They aren't very good at all.
Either way, trumpet can still sound very, VERY beautiful, like the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASB6hFUat4g

Either way, all instruments are beautiful, it just depends on how you play them.

Tchaik 5, Brahms 3, Siegfried Horn Call, Ein Heldenleben, all of the MAhler Symphonies, Brahms Horn trio.

That is all I have to say about that.

I'm a horn player, and I agree that they cannot be thrown into a cage match because both instruments are just too different. Horn and Trombone however can both sound very similar and when both players are listening to each other can blend perfectly.

Oh well I'm both a trumpet player and a horn player so now I'm sorta torn because to me both instruments and the people who play them are pretty awesome at my school soooooo..... I'll choose both.

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed,
but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance...

Is this even really a contest? Trumpets win by far.

*waits to be torn to shreds*

But, if their only problem is tenseness, then they just need to relax. I, as a 5th grader, was always tense. Someone taught me otherwise, but I still catch myself sometimes, being tense and clenching my throat. That's not the right way to play the Trumpet. I also played a little bit of Horn a few years ago, and it is a beautiful instrument.

... In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years
of democracy and peace, what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.

If a Horn is played properly it is a beautiful instrument as well as a Trumpet(in fact this could be said for most instruments).

I prefer the sound of a horn to a trumpet, but I like the versatility of a trumpet(ie. easier to transport, lighter to march than a mello, etc.). Trumpets also get the melody more which is nice for them. Each instrument has their pros and cons to them. Personally, I love playing horn, but yeah I've considered learning Trumpet for Jazz or Marching(trumpets would be lighter than mellos and I'm already a small person sweatdrop , but I'm gonna make do in HS next year)

I don't see a clear winner here, as someone else pointed out, it's not the instrument that makes the player, it's the player that makes the instrument.

biggrin Being a low brass player I have no biased-ness!~

In my opinion French Horn ( : P) sounds a lot nicer, while trumpet has a lot of the melodies, the horn kind of just does its thing while sounds awesome.

Plus our french horns sound a lot better than our trumpets at my school, so. Maybe I am biased?

I play both as well, and it is hard to say. Horn is my first instrument, and I think that when played right, it stands out among the other instruments.
But trumpet has it's side as well. I took it up for jazz, and its great fun to play. There's only one trumpet player in my school though who really does it justice. If it wasn't for him, I would hands down say horn, because the rest of us aren't all to well at playing the trumpet.
I would say though, that the horn is truly an amazing instrument. Play it solo, its beautiful, have more than one and its just breathtaking. There was one song our band played with a horn solo, and our BD said to just have all of us play. There was six of us, and it was amazing.

I must agree though, that it not quite fair to say which is best, it all depends on your experience with each one. Personally though, my heart will always lie with the horn biggrin

Got an epic scene in a movie? The score's probably got some French Horn leading the way. :]

But jeeze, the partials sound harder for horn players to hit as opposed to trumpets.

[I'm a flute player, I have no idea as to how playing either instrument is. xD]

Being a Trumpet Playing French Hornist (Yes both), I really am torn.

I love the high notes of the trumpet, but it can sound so hoarse, while the french horn has beautiful tone and grace, but the partials are a b***h!

I really dont knwo what to do sad
