Overview of Shadows Shadows are RP optional characters of the shop. While roleplaying your shadow isn't required, there are perks to making a journal for them and roleplaying them. If you choose to roleplay them, you can make a journal for them in the journal section to keep track of their progress. Shadows: Shadows are small, semi-tangible beings that attach themselves to an individual or a place, creating an almost unbreakable bond with their host. Shades: Shades are what shadows are referred to when they become tangible, living beings with humanoid appearance (( Note: A shades appearance is completely random. :3 )) Darklings: Darklings are the result of a Shade breeding with either a living being or another Shade. They are completely solid, but hold the appearance of a shadow. They usually outgrow this by toddler hood, but a rare few do not. Hosts: Hosts are the recipients of a bond with a shadow. A host can either be a person, an animal, a plant or object, or a location itself. There's no way to predict who or what will be chosen as a host; the process seems to be random and/or up to the will of the shadow.

Physiology
Size: A shadow has the proportions and size of an average toddler, ranging anywhere from 2-3 feet in height. They tend to appear pudgy, but rarely ever weigh as much as they appear to.
Eyes: A shadows eyes can range in any variety of bright colors, though the two most common eye colors are yellow and white. Rarely, if ever, the eyes can appear to be a black, brown, or other dull and dark color. The eyes may or may not give off a faint glow; whether or not they glow depends on a multitude of environmental and emotional factors.
Body: A shadows body is it's most intriguing feature. The body of shadow is consisted of a black, gel-like material, not uncommon to Jello in consistency. This gel-like tissue has the ability to turn into shadows, allowing the little shadow to slip in and out of our realm, granting them the ability to appear anywhere, anytime. It's theorized that between locations, the shadows themselves enter a separate realm, but this has not been confirmed as of yet. But, there must be someplace they go when they chose to disappear.
Hands: A shadow's hand consists of three stubby fingers and an equally small thumb. There hands, while seemingly useless for gripping, have pores on their palms and fingers that expand and contract, forming mini-vacuums that allow them to grip and pick up objects.
Pseudo-Hair: It's not uncommon for shadows to have formations that resemble hair or other appendages. While these growths are a precursor to physical traits they will have if they become Shades, they have no other known benefit or use.
Feet: Not much to tell here; a shadow's feet tend to be nondescript and featureless.

Psychology Shadows are about the size of three year olds, and they tend to have the mentality of them, too. While no two shadows are the same, most tend to be as curious and outgoing as your average two-three year olds. If it is closed, they will open it. If it is hidden, they will find it. They can, and more than likely will, get into anything and everything. While this can cause them to be a nuisance, they're adorable little voices and lovable personalities often make up for the inconveniences. The vocabulary of a shadow tends to be rather small. While they can understand everything being said to them, they tend to have a hard time developing speech skills. Some are able to reach the level of a toddler, while others are bound to repeating a simple syllable, like "Ni" or "Chu", over and over nonsensically as they try to communicate. The range of speech varies shadow to shadow. Shadows are also suseptible to mental disorders that stick with them for life, though not all shadows will be affected. They are especially prone to the following disorders: - Kleptomania - Stuttering - Phobias - Schizophrenia - Autism - Synesthesia - Multiple Peronsonality Disorder - Bibliomania - Anterograde amnesia - Psychogenic amnesia - Echolalia - Hypomania - Echopraxia - Narcolepsy - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Shadows are not limited to these mental conditions, nor are they condemned to have any mental disorder at all.

Eating HabitsShadows can and will eat, though whether it serves them any nutritional purpose has yet to be discovered. To eat, a shadow will simply bring food to its face, approximately where its mouth would be and, poof, food's gone. It's been theorized that is due to a biomechanism similar A shadow's food of choice is infinite. If they can pick it up, they can eat it. Most shadows prefer real food, however, desserts in particular. Some shadows prefer other food sources, and may be extremely picky. (i.e. only eating one sock from a pair, eating left shoes, ect.)

The Origin of the Shadows Shadows are the result of residual and unused magic. This excess magic is usually the result of a spell or charm left unfinished. While the spell doesn't cast, there is still a small amount of magic produced. When enough of these tidbits and leftovers are formed, a shadow can be born. Shadows are also the result of incomplete summonings. While the desired creature or person wasn't summoned or created, a place for them on this Earth was still carved out. Without anyone to fill this newly created space, the space gains sentience of its own, and a shadow is born. Shadows themselves can be summoned into existence rather easily. The process is so simple that someone without any magical aptitude at all can summon one. Sometimes, they can be summoned on accident without the summoner's knowledge or consent.

GrowthShadows have two phases of life. Shadows and Shades. As as shadow, it is in its juvenile stage. It's new to the world, and need the guidance of others to learn about the world around it. As it learns and experiences more, a shadow earns the ability to transcend to a Shade. As a Shade, a shadow gains a humanoid form and grows like a normal Gaian. A Shade will always start out as child, and will stop growing as it hits maturity. Once a shadow becomes a Shade, it cannot revert back to a shadow. Some shadows, realizing this, decide to never become shades, preferring their shadow bodies. When a Shade breeds, either with another Shade or another humanoid, a darkling is produced. Darklings look quite similar to Shadows, except they grow like a normal Gaian, slowly becoming more humanoid as they grow. Abilities Shadows, when they become shades, ALWAYS have a shadow based ability. It's not uncommon for multiple shades to share the same ability, or for several to have similar abilities. As of now, no shadows have reached Shade yet. As more shadows grow to Shades, this section will be updated with a table of abilities and of who has what.

Tips to Caring for Your Shadow 10 Steps to a Happier Household 1. Never, EVER let your Shadow have caffeine. Trust us on this one; they don't need it. 2. Shadows can become scared or nervous quite easily. But, you can comfort them just as easily with a gentle hug and a soothing, low-toned voice. 3. Always have cheesy poofs, or your shadow's favorite food, in stock and on hand. Shadows have irregular feeding patterns, so there's no telling when they'll get hungry or how much they'll eat. 4. If your shadow becomes a shade, DO NOT PANIC! Your new Shade-Child will pick up on your negative emotions and, more than likely, become upset and start wailing and crying. 5. Have plenty of board games, puzzles, and toys available to your shadow. They're less likely to get into trouble if you keep them occupied. Picture books are a good idea as well. 6. Shadows need a lot of loving attention to grow, just as a normal child would. Simple things like wrapping them in a cozy blanket or hugging them can make a world of difference. 7. When shadows cause mischief, they often don't realize that it's wrong. So, go easy on them. You're likely to scare them to tears if your start yelling, and you won't get anywhere. 8. Have a nightlight somewhere in your house. It'll help ensure you get a full night's sleep and keep your shadow from becoming frightened. 9. Socializing your shadow is important for proper development. If you don't socialize them, they're more susceptible to mental illness. 10. Never, EVER hit your shadow. They can become violent and down-right deadly if their mental self-defense lever is switched on.
