Well, you also have to make sure that you put in a male and female.
Also, each pokemon has an egg group. What an egg group does, is it tells you what pokemon can be bred with who, which is how you get some of the egg moves that pokemon can have.
Cross breeding is one of the best ways of getting powerful pokemon.
Also. The female pokemon, will determine the type of offspring that will hatch from the egg. If you put in a female charmander, and a male bagon (they have similar egg groups; the dragon egg group) What will hatch from the egg will be a charmander.
The male is also important, because the moves that the newborn will know come from what the male knows, and it works out like this: Tackle (most babies start off with this) Level up move that both the mother and father know TM move HM/TM move
Let's take my Garchomp for example. His moveset consists of Dragon Rush, Stone Edge, Earthquake, and Crunch.
If I were to breed him again, with say a Ditto, the baby's moveset would be Tackle, Dragon Rush, Stone Edge and Earthquake.
Why didn't the baby learn Crunch? That's because Garchomp learns that move as it levels up. It also learns Dragon Rush as it levels up, but at level 1, Gible will only know Tackle. But, because of where the move is on the move list, the baby retrained Dragon Rush, but lost Crunch.
I hope this wasn't too hard to understand... But that's just the basics of breeding. There's also the transferring of Natures, and IV's, using certain held items. But once you get the hang of breeding, then you can experiment with the different held items.

I honestly didn't know that. But, now I do. :] Thank you. I knew about the mother being the species, but I didn't know about the father making the move sets. But, if you do a male Pokemon with a ditto, will it still be the male Pokemon's species, and not another ditto?

But, if you do a male Pokemon with a ditto, will it still be the male Pokemon's species, and not another ditto? An interesting question. And here's your answer! When you breed a pokemon with a ditto, the ditto will transform into the opposite gender pokemon. So yes, when you breed a pokemon with a ditto, you'll get whatever species the male is, along with part of the male's moveset.

Here's a basic rule of thumb when it comes to which pokemon can breed or not.
First thing, ask yourself "Can I catch more than one of these?" If the answer is "No," then you won't be able to breed it, as those pokemon are one of a kind and are the legendaries.
But, if a pokemon is genderless, like magnemite or staryu, ditto fixes that problem.

I need to learn to not read old threads. Not all pokemon are like that, though. You can breed Rotom and Riolu, and you can only receive/catch one of those in-game.
