Well, I happened to see a small advertisement on Gaia showing Ouran Host Club. Again wondering what all the hype is about, I searched it up on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia
Haruhi Fujioka is a seemingly apathetic and reluctant heroine who has no interest in pretty and flashy things, sweet food (with the exception of fancy tuna), or frivolous males. The members of the Host Club all have a sort of weakness for her and either openly or secretly adore her. She eventually discovers that her feelings for Tamaki have grown into love.

Wikipedia
Tamaki Suoh is the president of the Host club and the Prince type. He is extremely passionate and kind, always ready to help people, and has an interest in many things. He is considered the most attractive of the hosts. He is also very intelligent (2nd in his class behind Kyoya), and a gifted piano player.

Umm...Doesn't this sound a bit like Twilight? (Yes, I read the whole character summaries for both characters. I spotted these lines and quickly thought of Twilight.)

Anyway, I just thought I'd point it out. If you're a fan, please don't think I'm insulting it... I've never read or seen this anime/manga and I might in the future. emo

Not really......the plot is completely different.

It also described Bella as sort of "pretty" I think, but Haruhi is not pretty and is often mistaken as a boy. Haruhi is also a nerd, I think if I remember correctly, and was only at that rich high school she could never afford to go to because of her good grades.
I don't recall Bella ever being smart.

I see absolutely zero relation.

Bela is supposedly "smart," and a nerd and lame and blah blah blah blah blah.

Twifail is so generic that almost anything can be applied to it.

Twilight is a 'novel' series written as a form of mental masturbation for the author. The plot is negligent, the romance nonexistent, the characterization possibly negatively present. OHSHC is one of the most popular shojo manga in existence (Onemanga.com lists it as the 5th most popular at the time of my post, it regularly fluctuates between the top seven spots. The lowest it has ever fallen is 9th) and even I, an ardent fan of ultra-violent shonen manga like Hellsing, enjoy it for its storyline and the hilarity that ensues from the boneheaded Tamaki and the nerdy Haruhi eventually getting together.

I always thought Fruits Basket was bretty big.
Maybe not as big as InuYasha or Death Note, but still pretty big and popular...

Fruits Basket was popular in its day, but the popularity of a manga always dies down after its publishing run and any related marketing tie-ins are completed. FB was completed in '07 and the online interest has bapered off. OHSHC is still going, albeit slowly.

Haruhi is nothing like that- she's one of those dull tomboyish characters that act so lacking in any sort of bold and annoying personality that you can't tell their gender by listening to them. At the beginning she looks like a wasted male freshman, and her hair is very male in style. She also doesn't really have boobs like most anime girls.

And SPOILERS! Tamaki does NOT get her because he's a girly princessy slut who lives a lavish rich lifestyle, and everyone falls all over him except Haruhi who could not give a s**t.

These two other boys fall for her, they're basically the Anime!FredandGeorge. Like from Harry potter. And one of them ends up with her.

And there's this guy who's like domeki from xxxHolic, I think his name is Mori, and there's the Kaiba-like jackass with the glasses, and the little boyish looking one who just might have Down's Syndrome, which makes him look like an adorable little 13-year-old even though he's in like high school or something...

And my favorite is the leader of the Horror club who worships cats and the dark. There is an entire episode dedicated to him, and it turns out he looks like a really sad all the time version of Fai D. Fluorite.

meh. I just loved their reaction to instant coffee. ^^ "So this is what poor people have! amazing!"

"I guess that poor people can't grind their own coffee beans!"

Haruhi: "these damn rich kids."

I've never seen the anime nor read the manga, so I wouldn't know- shojo usually sends me running up the walls so I tend to avoid it.

I prefer shonen ai but Ouran .... is not like [Twilight] at all.

Actually, it's more like La Corda D'Oro (Golden String) or if you like smutty non-shonen ai/shoujo ai manga, it's like Bishounen no Oheya (Pretty Boys' Room)

It's nothing like that ****** series about sparkly vampires. And I don't even want to mention the title causee... It makes me sick

I hope you're saying Corda's like Ouran and not
Twilight....because if you're comparing musically inclined hot guys to sparkling cannibalistic fairies, I'm going to cry....

I didn't care for it, but it's nothing like Twilight.

I read the manga and I would definitely not compare it to Twilight.
The wikipedia characteristics might sound similar but OHSHC offers a much better story, good humour and character development which the Twifail series obviously lacks.
It´s more of a comedy/romance story and I´d say the characters are quite unique and interesting, it also has plot development whereas all SMeyer´s sparklefairytale can provide is the same old solve-a-conflict-in-seconds and repeated use of the same words to show how perfect one of her characters is. rolleyes

All in all, I´d say it´s a definite no. biggrin

One, Wikipedia is pretty much only cliffnotes for pretty much everything...So don't expect much from it.

Two, Ouran is very much not like Twilight. The characters have growth. The female lead is strong, very independent, and actually SMART, unlike what Bella claims to be. The Male lead, or at least the love interest, has personality, quircks, and emotion, He may act like an idiot sometimes, but it's usually endearing and he truly does care about Haruhi.(Also the only reason he ever sparkles is because its a shojo and he tends to be overdramatic, lol) Though I haven't been keeping up with the story much lately, I know it's infinitely better than Twilight and doesn't revolve around some convoluted "romance" that makes you want to hack up your lunch.
