Do you believe the end of the world is nye, and if so then why?

( The only reason I brought this up is it can usually be religious AND you know there will be a hell of a lot of arguments being thrown around here. However, that is not the case. )

Even if there was some actual proof that the world would really end in 2012 outside of the word of a few people who are waiting for the apocalypse, I would still say that there's no way that the apocalypse will come at 2012.
Think about it. If I'm wrong, who's going to be around to call me on it?

Most of the 2012 thing revolves around sensationalism based on the Mayan Calendar, which is hilarious.

There is evidence that the Mayans based their long count calander on Galactic events, and the 2012 is the year that their calender ends (5125 I believe), it doesn't mean that they thought the world would end. Their calender is a recyclable calender and so 2013 would just become year one.

They held that every end holds a new beginning and so if they were still a major civilization they would be celebrating 2013 like we celebrate every January 1st.

The Ancient Mayans seemed to understand things that we are just beginning to relearn, like the fact that somewhere in this vicinity of time we are going to cross a galactic "equator", and their long count calender seems to reflect the "galactic seasons" (for lack of simpler term). There were predictions that there would be major changes, which are coming to pass, like polar shifts, and the natural upset that causes, but not the utter end of the world. In fact, there were also predictions of a new golden age that set in after 2012.

It is only a reflection of our times and our morbid society that there is such a glorified doom attached to it.

There are other arguments brought up to reflect that 2012 is the end such as I-Ching, some sloppy interpretation of old Sumerian texts, and web-bot projects, but if anyone really tried so hard, they could come up with the same reasons that next month would be the end.

I think with all the c-r-a-p that's going on, the end will be soon, but I know it's not gonna be on the day all everyone thinks it will be...

No frickin' way.

As I understand it, even the Mayans didn't believe that. 2012 the world would end in 2012. 2012 was just when their calendar ended and a new one was to begin. Does your wall calendar last forever? Or does it end on December 31? Do you think the world's going to end on December 31 when you run out of pages?

There's ALWAYS crap going on. You can't tell me that those people who lived in 1348-50 had less crap going on for them than we do now. During the Black Death Europe lost nearly 2/3 of its entire population.

The 1300's was marked by worldwide hardships. There were droughts and famine in North America for over 20 years. Earthquakes in the Middle East, China, and southern Europe. There was too much rain in Europe causing crop failure, and malnutrition. Not to mention wars, religious and ethnic persecution, and political upset and unrest....Does any of this sound familiar?

I could point out similarities throughout each century. The only reason there seems to be more crap now is because there are more people, and we have means of instant communication now, so we hear it almost as soon as it happens. If we base disaster per person affected, and we apply that ratio throughout history, then we see that less people are being killed by said disasters than ever before.

My calendar is not a magic calendar that can predict the future.
Also, I'm not sure if you own a PS3, but a few weeks ago a calendar problem caused all of the old systems to go crazy and for that day the world did end for gamers across the country. Think about that. XD

True. The early Christians thought the world would end after Christ was crucified, but obviously that fear was useless.

Personally I could care less when the world is going to end. It doesn't affect me. As for the whole world ending in 2012, that's bogus! That belief got started because that's when the Mayan calender ended. Why are people thinking the Mayans predicted the end of the world? If this civilization was so advanced why did they die off? They practically brought their destruction upon themselves.

The Christian Bible states that the end will come when no one expects it.
That is why crazy people are my heros, they are always saying how the world will end tomorrow or the day after that.
There is always going to be SOMEONE who believes the destruction of the earth is near and a day wont pass by that some crazy myth like Planet X will start up.
