Day of Silence, just a short summary for those who don't know about it, is a day that students (highschool or college) do not speak to make a stronger point about anti-LGBT harassment in schools.
You don't have to have the t-shirts or anything flashy to show off the cause. All you have to do is be quiet for a day.
In my highschool, because I live in a small town in Tennessee, we would never have done anything like this. I was openly gay, but I took harassment from not only my fellow classmates, but also some teachers and authority figures. If I would have led anything like this in my highschool, I would have had to pay. It wasn't until this past semester at my college that I was talking to one of my straight friends who's participated elsewhere, that I decided that I finally wanted to do this. I was afraid to be an activist in highschool. I come from an area where they still have KKK meetings regularly. That's why Day of Silence seems so interesting to me. It would help greatly, especially in my area, spread the word about anti-LGBT harassment and the need to stop it. It'll be my first year participating.
Do you think any of you will participate at your schools?
