Andere Gender: Female Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Craft: Seacraft Rank: Apprentice/Candidate
History: Andere is the first-born child to a pair of Seacrafters. Her mother remains ashore, running the family trading business as her father captains his vessel and runs goods hither and fro. Six more children were born after herself, all in fairly quick succession, and they were all sons. It was not a problem for the family, because business has been very good and what are children if not free labor?
Once she reached her tenth naming day, Andere was taken aboard the Horizon, her father’s flagship. She was the cabin boy until her oldest brother, Axin, joined the crew, and Andere was asked what she would like to specialize in. She answered navigation without hesitation and has been training under her father’s navigator since. By the time she was eighteen, all six of her brothers were aboard the Horizon, from the youngest cabin boy to her eldest brother training to replace her father as captain when he decides to retire.
It was a good life, as far as Andere was concerned. She gets along well with all her siblings; they are crewmates and depend upon each other to survive. If they don’t get the ship in on time, the trade is lost and supporting the family suddenly becomes about ten times more difficult. It’s only happened once before, but such small meals left a strong impression on each and ever one of the seamen. If they didn’t believe their father’s preaching ‘you reap what you sow’, they certainly did after, perhaps none more than Andere.
Axin has always been her rival, but they are friendly rivals. When Andere fell asleep while on watch for sandbars, Axin made sure they didn’t run abreast. That time Axin accidentally sold their wares for about half of what they were actually worth? Andere gambled it all back. They have each other’s backs, but it’s a secret, so don’t tell anyone, okay?
When Andere was Searched at age twenty while they were at port at Tillek Hold, Axin was naturally the first one she told, and he was the one who told her she ought to give it a try, at any rate. If she Stood and failed to Impress, there was always room back home on the Horizon. That security in mind, Andere rode with the green back to High Reaches to Stand for the first time.
Appearance: Andere is just one of the guys. Her dark mahogany red hair is cut short so she doesn’t have to worry about it in her face, her bangs kept out of her eyes be a bandanna. She dresses just like the rest of the crew, in boots and work clothes suitable for wherever they are sailing. Andere does not own a dress and the only jewelry she wears is a small gold bangle, a gift from her mother. She is a woman, somewhere under all that baggy clothing, but with work to be done, she doesn’t have time for flirting and she has long since forgotten she even has curves.
Personality: Nothing makes Andere happy like good, hard work. If you aren’t sore and tired by the end of the day, then you weren’t very productive now, were you? Being raised on a ship made the woman nothing if not a team player, which means two things. One: If you are in trouble, she will give you a hand without question and expect that you will return the favor should she ever need it. Two: If you want to eat tonight, you had damn well be pulling your weight. As far as Andere can tell, a Weyr is just like a really, really large ship and everyone ought to be pulling their weight along.
She’s always been her father’s little girl (that happens when one is the only daughter), so she never had to compete for his attention. Andere is used to being in the spotlight, and she rather likes it there. She works the best under pressure and often creates situations in which she will ‘sink or swim’. The feeling of victory is such an adrenaline rush, it makes her very competitive. Andere is a very sore loser (so try not to gamble with her unless you’re willing to lose all your marks) and isn’t above losing her temper if it gets her what she wants.
Sore loser aside, Andere’s nature is usually pretty easy-going, as long as everyone is doing there work. As long as it gets done properly, she doesn’t particularly care how it gets done. She isn’t nosy or gossipy; as far as she’s concerned, that’s one good way to ruin a good crew. That being said, she isn’t afraid to confront someone when something goes awry, even if they are older or higher stationed. The good of the ship (or the Weyr, Andere supposes) comes before the good of one, be it herself or someone else, and if the whole is endangered, someone needs to say something. She rarely allows herself to be intimidated and will argue until she’s blue in the face if that’s what it takes to get her point across.
As far as men are concerned, Andere likes them well enough. She has very high standards, making a lifetime commitment a little far-fetched for the woman. However, standards aside, flirting is something Andere never learned how to do. Forget the fact that most of the men her age on the ship were her brothers, if any of the other crewmates even thought about it, Axin and her father would keelhaul them before they got a hand on her! Seduction is the one thing that truly makes Andere uncomfortable and awkward as a fish out of water. Her only true master is the sea. All a women needs is the sea.

GOLD KANALETH With a love of High Reaches rivaled only by a love for her rider, Kanaleth takes pride in being a representative for the Weyr and, for lack of better term, its main cheerleader. She is more than happy to greet any newcomers, be them guests or transfers, or socialize with any member of the Weyr. As far as she is concerned, High Reaches is the most wonderful place to be, but Kanaleth isn’t about to force her opinion upon anyone. This gold will happily share all of its wonderful secrets to anyone willing to listen, but when time comes for them to make their decision about the Greatest Weyr on Pern, the most the gold will do is offer her opinion. While Kanaleth will respect anything they decide, she will respectfully disagree with them, because High Reaches Weyr is, without a doubt, the Greatest Weyr on Pern (yes, the capitals are necessary every time).
Kanaleth will never be hostile or cruel, and she thinks poorly of those who are, especially golds. In her mind, the golds are no different from other dragons, they are just a wee bit bigger. They are all dragons, and therefore, they are all equal. (Honestly, Kanaleth says, it’s a simple concept.) She does not prefer anyone’s attention because everyone’s attention is valuable in its own way. The word ‘stranger’ has no meaning to the young gold, even those she’s never met are greeted like old friends. She is exceptionally patient, making her a very good listener. It is not hard to talk over Kanaleth; without an aggressive bone in her body, she is satisfied to take the back seat and allow others to express themselves. In heated situations, she is hard to rile, often leaving her as the unbiased party, which is not a situation the gold would prefer not to be in. Every solution she comes up with is some sort of compromise, because she hates to disappoint any of the parties. Life is rarely pictured in black and white for her and the shades of grey make her indecisive. Kanaleth is also easy to take advantage of; she assumes the best of everyone and believes whole-heartedly in second chances.
Intelligence is another pitfall for Kanaleth. She’s very clever, even as far as golds are concerned. Her lessons rarely need repeating and she usually comes to her own conclusions very quickly without consulting her rider. With no problems being independent, she enjoys a good challenge and doesn’t seem ruffled by failure. Where the hardy dragon gets herself in trouble, however, is when she starts to jump the gun. Once she sees a pattern, Kanaleth assumes she’s got it down, and while she usually does, life throws curveballs every now and then, and the gold ends up making a fool of herself. She is also prone to over thinking the important decisions, especially those posed to her by her peers. (Using the term ‘friends’ is a little meaningless as far as Kanaleth is concerned everyone is her friend.)
Her work ethic is something legends will be made of. Just one of the crowd, Kanaleth will insist she work just as hard as everyone else and frown upon those golds who on the pretense that they are Queens. Full of energy, work is something she truly enjoys and she goes stir-crazy if asked to sit and be patient for too long. If not watched carefully, she will work herself (and those working with her) past exhaustion and often needs to be reined in once enough is enough.
As far as Flights are concerned, well, Kanaleth isn’t really concerned. Her love for the blue is bittersweet; Weyr hierarchy dictates he will never Fly her. Therefore, Kanaleth can truly chose the best suitor on any given day without being influenced by strong feelings which means, of course, she can barely make the decision at all, unwanting to hurt anyone’s feelings. She will need her rider’s guidance and trust she is making the choice for the good of the Weyr, not herself. Afterwards, she will apologize to each and every bronze, often trying to find ways to make it up to them. It wasn’t their fault, really! They can still be friends though, right? WHY ME? A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!
Kanaleth adores Andere’s work ethic and her dedication to her family. She knows that, given time, Andere will come to see High Reaches as her home and family and that fierce loyalty will be directed to the Weyr Kanaleth so loves. Her rider understands the sacrifice of one for the whole. Andere is not nearly as gullible as the Queen and will be able to protect her from getting taken advantage of (even when Kanaleth insists everything is fine). She is not afraid of confrontation and will be the first to step up if someone starts abusing the gold’s good heart nature.
A generally good-natured young woman, Andere will tolerate Kanaleth’s secret love for the blue, but she will also insist they try to keep it on the down low. She might not be Weyrbred, but she’s not an idiot; blue-gold pairings just aren’t kosher. She will not, however, break up true love, and that’s incredibly important to Kanaleth. Her blue is the only selfish wish Kanaleth will ever have, and even then, she knows she can never really have him.
Andere is quick to judge; where Kanaleth’s desire to make everyone happy leads her to indecision, Andere’s independence allows her to direct her dragon in a new path. Hopefully the pair will learn to consult each other over time, learning that each method has its perks. Kanaleth is certainly much more diplomatic than her rider, but her patience allows her to run damage control for Andere and teach her without ever losing her temper.
Both of them insist on an even playing field. Neither dragon nor rider is someone you will want to debate against; while Andere is the one who will incite the argument, Kanaleth is the one who will politely refuse to back down.
Watch out, High Reaches, here comes service with a smile!

Kanaleth is based off of the ...
Golden Labrador
The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, or Lab for short) is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. They have webbed paws for swimming, useful when they retrieve their prey, hence the name retriever. The Labrador, once known as the Lesser Newfoundland, is the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is, by a large margin, the most popular breed by registration in Canada, the United States (since 1991) ,and the United Kingdom. It is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in Canada, the United States, Australia, United Kingdom and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities. Typically, Labradors are athletic, and love to swim, play catch and retrieve games, and are good with young children.
Labradors are a well-balanced, friendly and versatile breed, adaptable to a wide range of functions as well as making very good pets. As a rule they are not excessively prone to being territorial, pining, insecure, aggressive, destructive, hypersensitive, or other difficult traits which sometimes manifest in a variety of breeds. As the name suggests, they are excellent retrievers. Labradors instinctively enjoy holding objects and even hands or arms in their mouths, which they can do with great gentleness (a Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it). They are also known to have a very soft feel to the mouth, as a result of being bred to retrieve game such as waterfowl. They are prone to chewing objects (though they can be trained out of this behavior). The Labrador Retriever's coat repels water to some extent, thus facilitating the extensive use of the dog in waterfowl hunting.
