Running clockwise and spiraling in~ Silence is Golden Egg – Dorath's second gold and, judging by its size compared to the rest of its clutch, this won't be another Telgar Incident. It gives off a feeling of energy and excitement, but also a distinct aura of gentleness. They need not fear the gold inside this egg, for she will do them no harm when she hatches. Unlike some eggs, this one doesn't seem to mind being touched by either gender.
Mask in the Dark Egg – Brown Brath to Zacharai This egg is the second biggest of the eggs after the Coffee 'n Cream Egg and it knows its place. It stands tall and proud with a clear feeling of attitude about it. Whether bronze or brown, nobody knows for sure, but male candidates especially will find this egg to be the spunkiest of the clutch. Whoever gets the dragon inside is in for some trouble!
Koi Pond Egg - Green Aceth to Soril A dainty, pretty little egg, the Koi Pond Egg seems to enjoy the touch of the Mask in the Dark egg. Though not nearly as spunky to the touch, candidates will feel an innate curiousity. Perhaps a want for adventure that the Mask in the Dark Egg dragonet is going to provide?
Broken Heart Egg – Blue Staff Custom This egg leans up against the Multiberries Egg, almost like the two are bumping fists. It's clear this egg just wants to have fun and has almost made a habit out of wiggling suddenly when touched just to play around with the candidates. Even though it seems to like its neighbour, there is an underlying feeling of competiveness. Best friends and rivals?
Multiberries Egg – Blue Staff Custom This egg leans up against the Broken Heart Egg, almost like the two are bumping fists. A little more stand-offish when compared to its brightly coloured neighbour, it seems a little more selective about those who touch it. When it doesn't like you, you'll know it. The dragonet inside clearly doesn't mess around.
Coffee 'n Cream Egg - Brown Sharmanyth to Gylren A surprisingly large egg, the Coffee 'n Cream is a fairly light, creamy brown with some darker, rusty-coloured splotches placed attractively across its shell. It looks extremely heavy, and is standing straight and tall at the front of the clutch, almost as if it's trying to protect the majority of its clutchmates.
Grassy Nook Egg – Blue Bayeth to Delilah Hiding behind the Coffee 'n Cream Egg, the Grassy Nook egg almost seems to cringe away from contact. It's not that it doesn't seem friendly, and it's certainly not angry. Rather, the egg seems to be a little scared, if that's at all possible for an egg. It's a little egg, probably holding a blue or a green.
Delicious Cookie Egg – Green Perditith to Lala This egg just wants to have fun! Though it's leaning away from its clutchmates it doesn't seem to dislike them at all. Instead, it feels a little playful, with an undertone of fidgety energy that seems to radiate from the egg. This one definitely wants to hatch, perhaps even before its time!
Darkest Before Dawn Egg – At first glance, there's nothing special about this egg. It's about the size of a blue and doesn't seem to give off any notable feelings to the candidates who touch it. Perhaps it's a shy dragon? Or maybe it just has nothing to say. What is peculiar is the way it leans up against the gold egg, touching its tip gently against the large egg. What could this mean?
Earthy Stains Egg – Green Cusith to Naia This egg is… well, unnerving of a better description. Instead of getting a read on the dragon inside, it's almost if the dragon is getting a read on the candidates touching it! Touching this one gives a definite feeling of being appraised, quietly, but appraised nonetheless. Could it be judging each candidate's worth before it hatches?
Curled Leaf Egg – Green Salth to Iden Right in the middle of the clutch, the Curled Leaf Egg sits just slightly to one side, almost as though cocking one leg and resting. Touching this egg gives a feeling of quiet indifference, as though the dragonet inside isn't willing to pass judgement on those touching it so soon. Compared with some of its clutchmates, the egg is rather mellow.

Even with most candidates having one Hatching under their belts, it would be hard getting used to Jilis' thundering voice calling over the bellows of the dragons. "Get your robes on! Girls to the left, boys to the right, let's get going! We don't have all day!' The humming was strong, resonating through the very core of the ancient volcano as the candidates dropped what they were doing and made the mad dash to their quarters for their robes.
Jilis straightened a few robes on the way by, not wanting to let the spectators to think the candidates of High Reaches to be unkempt. The Weyr didn't need any more speculation about them. Rumours about the plague were bad enough.
Inside the Hatching Sands, Dorath sat in her customary location, watching the eggs intently. A few had begun to wiggle, soft chirps audible to those who were close enough to hear.
Perhaps now more than ever, the empty space beside Luci where D'astel had once stood was keenly felt.

Lala and the other candidates had been hurried through their dressing, the tall, lean young woman was draped in yards of white fabric and then pushed out onto the sands, their heat burning through the soles of her shoes. Her long hair had been pulled back into twin braids, though she hadn't had time to grab her head kercheif to keep the shorter hairs around her face out of her gray eyes.
Her normally heavily lidded eyes were wide open today as the nineteen year old looked around her. There were so many people here today. More people in one place than Lauretia had ever seen together in all of her years as a trader. Then again, she never really got invited to big events at the holds they visited. Apparently a Hatching brought in more visitors than most gathers. Lala could feel a headache growing in her temples with all the noise of the people and the humming of the dragons. For a moment, she wished she was a hundred miles away on the back of her faithful runner, just her and the wide blue sky as she scouted the path ahead of their trading caravan. Out there there was only the sound of the wind and the pounding of her runner's hooves.
Lala was brought out of her wish, though, when the humming increased, and her eyes were drawn back to the shaking eggs, which seemed to shake more and more with every passing minute.

As ever, it was a struggle to get his quartet of pests to stay put in his weyr; they wanted to be where the fun was!... But between the two of them, he and Raith explained that they needed to stay in the basket, and furthermore the green dragon promised to share the going on with them. This small matter settled L'thor sprung onto his lifemate's back, and they swooped down towards the hatching sands. As ever, the humming of the dragons made L'thor's heart race; he could feel it in his body through contact with Raith, and in his soul through the excited atmosphere that was building. New bonds were about to be made.
Raith landed lightly by the riders' stands for just a moment before lofting elegantly onto a perch her eyes brilliant blue, and fixed intently on the eggs. She hoped for a good number of greens in there, and she would make sure she welcomed them harder than ever given there was a gold out there that most people would be obsessed with. She would welcome the gold too of course, but it was the smaller dragons she most looked forward to greeting; she would be far more likely to become friends with them, after all.

Time, Rath announced, addressing his rider calmly even as he took up the humming.
"As if the humming wasn't enough of an indication," the dark-skinned retiree muttered.
Will we watch now that your grandson has Impressed? the brown asked. I would like to see it. We have watched every hatching since mine, I think.
"We have," A'ram agreed. "I watched a few more than that, even. So, by all means, let us watch this one. I will meet you there."
The brown took off from his ledge and found his place among the watching dragons while rider made his way more slowly to the hatching grounds. Once he reached the stands, A'ram didn't go too far. The tiers were difficult for him to ascend and descend, and so he opted not to deal with them. He could watch just as well from higher up.

Zacharai stared at Dorath with calm whiskey colored eyes, a slight smile curling the corner of his lips. He was eager for the hatching, but also apprehensive. This would be his last chance before he became too old to Impress. This was, in effect, his last chance.
Crossing his fingers inside the sleeves of his robes, he stared around at the other candidates, offering them nods if they smiled in his direction. He wished them all luck, but he didn't know any of them enough to cheer any of them on more then any other.

Jessalie had been organizing the medical supplies for about the millionth time, trying to divert her pre-hatching anxiety. She felt a wave of relief when she felt the ground seemingly come alive underneath her feet with the dragon's rumbling. Of course, another wave of anxiety struck immediately after this, greater than before. The hatching. The hatching! Her feet were a blur as she dashed to grab her robe, pulling it on in a frenzy and not bothering to fix her hair. No time. She practically ripped her earrings out as she deposited them on her shelf, and scurried to get to the hatching ground. It wouldn't do her any good to be late, and Jessalie wanted to be in front! Of course, she'd let shorter people stand in front of her, it was the right thing to do, but...she did want to get a good spot. She wanted to see all that was happening!
She followed the rest of the candidates, careful not to justle or bump anyone. That would be rude. She sighed and inhaled deeply, counting to ten in a practiced stress relief method. It worked...sort of. She made sure to offer Dorath a deep bow of respect and courtesy, as she rather approved and liked High Reaches' senior gold. She seemed competent. Jessalie took her spot on the sands, careful to tread quickly but carefully, and to appear composed. She sent loving thoughts at the eggs, not sure whether or not they could hear her, but figured it couldn't hurt.
Another deep breath, and she stood up straight and tall and faced the eggs with determination. She was ready for this!

A'jel sat in the stands with the other riders purely out of formality. He was not fond of social situations, and with the word of plague, it only emphasized his reclusive tendencies. However, Vogieth would not let him not come. The small brown knew his rider needed to come, even if he didn't like it. Vogieth kept pushing His to join in on the social scene more, just so far it was to no avail. A'jel was only comfortable around Vogieth. Vogieth on the other hand, might as well have been a social butterfly.
I have a good feeling about today, Mine!
A'jel chuckled a bit. You always say that. He remarked back pushing some of his pale blond hair out of his tan face as the shorter layers not kept back in his long ponytail fell unceremoniously in his face. He figured he might as well make the best of this situation and write down names to remind himself of who impressed this time around. If there was anything A'jel hated more than to be social, it was to be made fun of. He had a very fragile ego.

...shardit. Just about to eat when the dragons began their humming, Fellendar knew exactly what this meant. He'd stood twice before, he knew the drill by now. Of course, that didn't mean he wasn't cringing as Jilis bellowed, somehow outdoing even the chorus of dragons. The youth couldn't help the surge of excitement, starting in his stomach and slowly working its way across his limbs. His entire body tingled, from his fingertips to his toes. Getting into the flowing robe was hard enough on his own, but-
"SHARDIT CLOUD!" Fell swatted at the buzzing blue irritably. The lighter of his blue flits soared overhead, trumpeting loudly as the candidates quickly changed. Rain, on the other hand, was sitting quietly nearby, watching his boy with a steady curiosity. Neither had been around long enough to witness the event before, though Fellendar thought it was obvious which one has handling it better. "Okay. Cloud. Rain. Stay here."
He took a step back, huffing softly when Cloud buzzed after him. "No. Stay." He pointed at Rain. "Stay with him. I'll be right back."
Fellendar took a few more steps, and Cloud leapt forward again, screeching as he dived for Fell's head. "NO. CLOUD. NO. STAY." He held both hands up. "Stay. Stay." And just when it looked like the young firelizard might understand, the former Harper made a wild dash for the Hatching Sands. He arrived out of breath, stumbling over his bow to Dorath before he took his place with the males. This time, however, he stood on his toes and began to watch the female candidates. Where was Roni?

Julian was getting something to eat when a humming went through his head. He looked around trying to obtain the source. Then it dawned upon him, Hatching. The eggs are hatching. Barely a night there and the eggs picked now? Quickly he jumps up leaving his plate and races back to where he was sleeping.
There he finds a man yelling. Taking the direction from him and following other male candidates Julian gets into the changing room. Hurriedly he dawns a white robe. Fumbling a little before getting it on right and pulls the sandals on afterwards. Glancing around he follows a couple of the other finished male candidates out.
Out on the sands, he pauses. Hot, I can't believe how hot it is out there. Suppose they need it to be. Wish I could have worn my leather boots on these sands. Mincing his way onto the sands and looking silly Julian crosses towards the eggs. Part way there the looming presence of the Queen makes him stop.
For several long minutes he stares at her. Belatedly he preforms an awkward bow to her. Then moves a little closer to the clutch, but not too close. Watching as several of the eggs are wobbling, he wonders what will happen now.

The Mask in the Dark Egg's wiggles begin to escalate, causing the egg to rock back and forth as it struggles to get out. Two rocks and a well-placed wiggle later the egg cracks and the dragon emerges. A brown! And a rather motley looking fellow at that!
If dragons could grin, this one definitely would be as he makes his way around his clutchmates towards the group of boys. On the way, he seems unable to resist bumping his snout against a few of the eggs. He almost succeeds in nudging the Multiberries Egg right onto its side before a warning rumble from Dorath stops him.
Judging by the soft noises coming from the brown he seems to be laughing as he trots away from the eggs, whirling blue eyes now focused on the gathered boys. Who was His?

Tanda didn't have anyone special to watch this hatching, but she went anyway. She liked to watch hatchings. They were usually happy occasions, even with the odd dragon going between. That was tragic when it happened, but it hadn't happened recently at High Reaches. She'd heard about Telgar's fiasco and B'shir had written her about the hatching in Ghenza the last time she'd sent Shibra to him with a letter - Tanda was very good about writing to him, even when she really had nothing new or interesting to report - but it hadn't happened yet at High Reaches. Not recently anyway.
She moved to a place near the front of the stands, but not too near. She was certain now that she was pregnant, though she wasn't absolutely certain who the father was, and she didn't want to take any chances by being too close to where the dragonets might decide to wander in search of their riders. She'd seen violent things happen to people in the first few rows, and she wasn't going to expose her baby to any risk. She just wanted to watch. And maybe expose her baby to Weyr life as early as possible.
The first egg was a brown! She grinned and leaned forward in her seat, very glad that she wasn't so pregnant that leaning forward was difficult.

Veyes slipped onto the sands looking over at the gold and following what he had learned at the other Weyr, he made sure to pay his respects to her right away. Fortunately, this time he was quick to get into gear and had been able to work his way into his robes quickly without incident. He prayed that bad luck would not have followed him to this Weyr.
As he looked at the across the sands at the eggs, he sort of wondered what to expect. He could guess at colors to pass the time at least it would keep his mind focused for a bit. At least, the gold egg was easily identifiable. He smiled a little thinking it would be funny if the gold chose a man. Of course, she wouldn't but he always played around with stories in his imaginary world when things unsettled him. Hatchings made him a little nervous since his days at Ista.
Every time he had been on the sands at Ista, things had always gone poorly and well since he had arrived here, this Gold and rider had lost their Weyrleader. He guessed by things he had heard they might have been close but well he never really met the Weyrleader. At least, that hadn't been his bad luck....but...still the plague was a terrifying thing in itself.
Refocusing back on the eggs...Each egg was another opportunity that caused his mind to wander again and dream about possibilities of the future mixed with the ideas of what he could do if he were a rider. But he had to snap out of it because he didn't want to be blindsided by a wayward hatchling. Even as his eyes studied the eggs and the brown dragonet that was now walking across the sands; he crossed his fingers. Would his match finally be among these?

Onyal set the riding strap she had been repairing down beside her, as the sound of the dragons filled the air, she could hear Eshuth as he joined them and felt his elation through their mental bond.
It is time mine, there will be a Hatching! Eshuth's excitement bubbled over in his voice, I do hope there are a lot of powerful Browns in this clutch...what am I saying, all Browns are powerful.
I have ears, Eshuth, Onyal answered back tartly, and then felt sorry for snapping at her bonded, the young brown rider was feeling moody and on edge. Her sister had come to High Reaches Weyr and Onyal was still coming to terms with the feelings the young Telgar candidate stirred in the brownrider. Her sister had turned away from her upon impressing Eshuth..and now she wanted to meet him.
I hadn't noticed, he answered, Go find a place in the stands, Mine. Eshuth wanted his to feel more comfortable around her own kind, it seemed that she was always stuck in their room or pushing herself into more duties and chores. ---------------- Onyal had found a seat as far in the back as possible in order to not be spotted, she wasn't comfortable around so many. Happy? I am here.
Eshuth answered jovially, I am! And look! A Brown first! that's more lucky than..well than a bronze hatching first!
Olla was scuffing her boots on the ground as she trudged through the lower caverns going about a chore that one of the woman had set her to. The slender couldn't believe her ears or feet when the rumbling started. Olla was not allowed to stand at Telgar, her mother strictly forbade it when Onyal Impressed..but now? Now she was free to make her own decisions and that just wouldn't do for the sixteen year old candidate.
She rushed to the candidates barracks and to her trunk in order to grab the white robe, the dark haired girl was inhaling and exhaling heavily, this would be her first time on The Sands..she'd made the decision to come this far, might as well actually don the robe and get her butt in gear. ----- Olla stepped onto the sand moments before the browns hatching, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched with amusement. This will be a good day, she reassured herself.

Had been relaxing in his cot when the shout came making him jerk up with a start and abruptly smack his head on the low shelf. Damnit Jilis, what a pain in the a**, and the head. Although when he tuned in enough to actually listen the enanimity felt for the grumpy old man quickly faded. Ohh the hatching. What he was here for and the small hope that had mended his shattered dreams just a little and given him a direction. He quickly jumped up and pulled on the robe, before pausing and looking down at himself with a sour expression. With his long hair it made him look like a women. But well if anyone was going to wear a man dress it might as well be him, after all...he could work it. He tied the simple cloth belt round his waist to hold the thing together and slipped into the sandals for the sands.
Hot sands and open toed shoes? Who's bright idea was that? If he ever found out he would sure to drop a lump of firestone on their heads to test if it was empty as he suspected. Smoothing the robe over his hips he found that he looked pretty presentable and joined the thong of other candidates onto the sands. It was his first hatching, but from the way he acted you would have guessed it was his third, forth or even fifth. He followed the crowd somehow creating hiw own space in the mass, bowing to the queen as he entered and taking a good post at the front of the boys and slightly to the side, eyes glancing around the rest of the people gathered cool as the peeks of the high reaches mountains.
Not that he hadn't taken some harper teachings aboard and his training was sure to try and grasp even the smallest details for mental storage. Plus such observations were very useful for flashing a dazzling charming smile at any girl or boy he caught looking his way, he even tossed in a wink to the best looking. How he pulled this off without looking incredibly corny is another one of those small mysteries of life that will likely never be solved but in the end, as soon as the eggs started to show real activity his eyes were right back on them.
Like all the rest he was still only here for one reason, the dragons that would grant them passage into the world of riders.
And then. crack! The first egg had hatched and out tumbled a brown, a small pang of disappoint would no doubt be felt by some that he wasn't a bronze which was a good omen for a hatching but the cheery little face and rumbled laughter instantly put the small inner quake that trembled Efrains heart a little more at ease. It was a very good start in his eyes.
