I was reading through this old Catholic Newspaper (well only a month old) and I came across an article discussing how the U.S. Postal service is going to issue a stamp to honor the humanitarian work of Mother Teresa.

This isn't without controversy, the Freedom from Religion Foundation is against this because they believe this goes against restrictions dealing with honoring religious institutions or those whose achievement are associated with any religious beliefs.

For those of you who don't know, Mother Teresa has received both the Nobel Peace Prize and the U.S. Congressional Medal of Freedom. I'm not sure how things have played out since February but it seems like M.T. is being discriminated against by the Freedom from Religion Foundation because of her religious background. What do you all think about this?

I think she is. I think people take seperation between church and state too seriously, to the point where it's become a negative to be affiliated with a religion, especially if you're something like a teacher.

I heard about this too. I cant believe they're boycotting Mother Teresa...Really? REALLY!?
Yes she was Catholic, but she is also someone who we should all aspire to be like. If there was ever any 2 people with seats right beside God, it's her and Gandhi. Just my opinion.

And we already have religious stamps.
Eid stamps year round for Muslims. Minora stamps for the Jews. And crap loads of Christian stamps around Christmas time.

There are people who are critical of Mother Teresa.
Watch the P&T Bullshit episode called "Holier than Thou" episode (S3E5).

I don't know how solid the facts are in this episode, but I do agree with this point: a lot of people think that Mother Teresa and Gandhi are these perfect, spotless people and it has become taboo to criticise them in any way. Which is stupid.

But they aren't objecting to Mother Teresa being on a stamp because they think she's a monster, they're critical of her because she's religious...that's the problem here. I think EternallyBlue summed it up well enough the separation between church and state is being taken to the extremes so that it is becoming a negative influence on society and not a positive one helping to aid our freedom of religion.

Definitely. I didn't even find her to be much of a humanitarian, mainly due to the abstinence indoctrination, as though that really works especially in third world countries. Knowledge of condoms and how they work can go along way, religion keeps plenty of useful and scientific things in the dark, and in that way I'm in favor of being critical of religion.

As for Gandhi, he was selfish and inconsiderate, see how his wife died, and the role he had in it, if someone wants evidence.
