Going to Fred may have been a mistake, but where else could he had gone for this kind of advice? Melfina was far too innocent and Gene wouldn't understand. It wasn't like Jim could write to his dead beat Father, even if he DID have an address to write him at. Aisha and Suzuka would just laugh at him.
Who else could he tell that he had gotten far to drunk on his 17th birthday and kissed a boy in a Space Bar? Who else could he tell that he liked it, and that it scared him? Who else wouldn't judge him?
Telling someone over video phone was unthinkable. Jim knew how easy it would be for Melfina to find the audio file. He had gone in person to Fred, telling Gene he was visiting some girl. Gene had given him a handful of condoms and a good luck. It was embarrassing, but the way Fred's eyes lit up like he had won the damn lottery as Jim sat there, blushing while he retold his adventurous birthday was worse.
“I kissed a Boy” The words heavy in his mouth. “I liked it.” His face burning, “Fred I...I think I'm..how am I going to tell Gene?”
Fred had laughed “I knew this would happen some day, darling James.” He chuckled. Jim blushed even deeper. “Look James, dont rush yourself. You're Young. You're in an age of discovery! Self exploration! Don't worry about telling Gene yet.”
“Thanks Fred.” Jim had said and sighed.
Then the wine came out and they were drinking and Jim couldn't help but think how....pretty Fred's hair was, how nice his eyes were, how smooth is skin was, and he was such a good listener and he felt better already.
Hell, he was young. This was his age of discovery. Self exploration. Right? And Fred....Fred was....so.....Well he was here, for starters, and good at listening, and dependable in a jam, and he was rich....
So he kissed him.
It really wasn't his fault.
He was drunk.
And Fred...was....a really good kisser.

They fell asleep like they, curled up on the sofa with an bottle on wine on the floor next to them. Jim's head resting under Fred's chin in a deep and drunken slumber. The morning didn't matter. It was the age of discovery after all.
