John Williams is amazing. <3 I also like Holst. Michael Giacchino (Up, The Incredibles, the new Star Trek movie) is creeping his way up my favorites too. n_n

Nobuo Uematsu. I liked his music before the whole symphony orchestra versions existed, but those orchestra ones really make them amazing. Don't care if it originated in video games or not, it's epic music.

I like Swearingen pieces as well. While I haven't played any Whitacre pieces, I have listened to one online-"October". It's so pretty.
As of late, my favorite composer has probably been Samuel Hazo.

One of my friends? He writes amazing music, although it's nearly all minor keys... His percussion parts are getting a lot better, although they're still ridiculously easy as long as you know the key.
Famous composers though? Percy Aldridge Grainger. All his music is so challenging that it's amazing to listen to but a b***h to play. <3 Him and Bach. Absolute favourite song of his is Fugue in G Minor (if he wrote it? I can't ever remember who wrote what with the ancient composers like them...)
EDIT: The below post made me realize I had forgotten that Danny Elfman is a composer. I don't know how I forgot since I listen to his music all the time. D'oh. Elfman is definitely my absolute favourite famous composer of all time. heart
