Apparently in one of Paramore's new music videos, the singer is wearing a Bodyline JSK. I don't keep up with them. In fact I despise them. But everyone else, however, eats them up. They were on the Twilight soundtrack and whatnot.
So since they're so popular, it's obvious lolita is going to spread because of Paramore. But my problem is a. I don't want lolita to be popular. It's my own happy little niche. I'm happy! b. She was wearing the JSK alllllll wrong. So not only will there be little lolitas running around everywhere, they won't be doing it properly.

I haven't seen the video, and I do not know how she was wearing the jumperskirt, but I can definitely understand frustration at someone doing something badly and the fear it might become a fad because of it. I've only really heard one Paramore song, and I liked it, and that's enough to make me sigh and shake my head at the idea of them playing for Twilight.

I hate both Twilight and Paramore. I only checked out the video to make sure it was in fact lolita. And it's an adorable Bodyline jumper. :c She's not wearing a blouse at all, and ankle socks. I'm kind of iffy on ankle socks. I almost never like them. And she wasn't wearing a petticoat. And if she was, it was flat enough that you couldn't tell, which might not be her fault. xD
But but but I'm very concerned! I hate to do it, but if I have to pull a Hatsumomo and ink every scene kid's dress I see, I will. *thinking rationally xD*

Let's not set an image of lolitas as crazy. Also, it turned out the song I was thinking of was by Flyleaf, and the song I heard by Paramore (Crush, as it happens) really did nothing for me. So I retract that previous statement.

It really didnt bother me, it's kinda old news by now the music videos been our for a while... thought when it first came out it was all over EGL on LJ. I liked them before twilight so I dont really care.
For one she's wearing it so dressed down I wouldnt even call it lolita. She's wearing a very pretty girly dress. She's not going around saying she is a lolita or that she was even dressed in lolita.
And second the music videos been out for a while and I dont see everyday girls flocking to bodyline and buying all their dresses. America is accustomed to people wearing "weird" clothing in music videos.
I was more upset about Hot Topic selling a really crappy made dress and calling it lolita. The one that was black and white stripes with red? Or even the Twilight Bella dress that was green with the black flowers, it was cute, but poorly made, and WAY overpriced.

She looks classy and sweet. I don't think being blouse-less is going to give lolita a bad name. I think it's lovely, and "rule breaking" or not, I've worn similar things in the summertime.
I'd kinda like lolita to become more well known anyway. It's not going to be some lame hot trend to be full-on lolita, not everyone is that patient and dedicated to getting dressed, especially in clothes that can be cumbersome. Girls will probably start wearing a few lolita items here and there, and I think that's good. They won't become us, we won't become less us, they will just have an appreciation and be more aware of who we are.
I've got neon yellow and orange reading glasses, "demin" tights and bright red hair, but I'm still not a scene kid. They don't hate me for looking "semi-scene", because I'm not trying to be something I'm not. I'm just me. If girls start liking JSKs, let them be who they are too. I wouldn't mind seeing a lolita item or two out there. And as far as bad lace goes and girls giving lolita brands a bad name, girls can look terrible in jeans, but levi's are still cool...
But that's just me. I'm excited to see what is unfolding from the aftermath of Lady Gaga, Lil Mama and Hayley.
Edit: It has begun. Forever 21, Love Culture, and Wet Seal. All sporting new, very lolita-like headgear and accessories. I've seen dresses around too, but I'm not sure where the gals are getting them from. They are very country lolita-ish, nothing gothic or too sweet. Anybody have an idea as to what I'm talking about? I can't seem to find them.

I feel your sympathy... I feel similar about the explosion of Alice in Wonderland popularity.
OPINION AHEAD. It is NOT MY INTENTION to offend anyone, please do not take anything I'm about to say personally.
Tim Burton's film makes me nerdrage. The Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts are not the same character. The Queen of Hearts is the one that yells "Off with her head!" and the Red Queen lives in a world of chess that exists through the looking-glass. And yet, 'The Red Queen' is the name given to the character in the movie, who fills the roll and behavior of the Queen of Hearts, even though they are separate characters that exist in different universes.
Furthermore, half of the characters depicted living in Wonderland (Tweedledee and Tweedledum among them) are also supposed to exist through the looking-glass and not in Wonderland. It's not as if there wasn't enough content in the two books to fill up a movie, but the two separate works of literature are so often condensed together that I can't help but let it aggravate me a little bit.
Which is not even to mention the fact that neither book is called "Alice in Wonderland."
Bringing the topic back to lolita, and including the Hot Topic point as well, this newfangled and butchered interpretation of the literature (and its merchandise) is the version that reaches the attention of the masses moreso than the original material, so the point of view of the newcoming fans is inevitably a skewed one. That's kinda like what we're talking about here. ...Right?
Uh, sorry if I went off on a tanget. sweatdrop

Well done. While I'm excited to see the movie, I do agree that even though the story may be mashed together in a creative way, not enough people even know about the original work to appreciate it correctly. And yes, that relates to the topic. If pop stars mangle lolita and make it overtly sexy or the wrong silhouettes and styles and pass it off as lolita, instead of the possibility of understanding from the general public and maybe new US based shops, people may see us as even more of a fetish and Bodyline will become a sex costume shop again to compete with supply and demand. I hope it doesn't go down that way... I'd like to see more ensembles like Hayley's, and not the over-the-top-with-ganguro-makeup thing Lady Gaga did...

I just looked up the video and watched it, I was not impressed with her look, though it was not terrible, I actually wear ankle socks myself on occasion so I wasnt bothered by those, but the dress did need a blouse underneath so as to not be so reveiling. Other than the lack of petticoat and blouse it wasnt so bad, and is Paramore even popular anymore? I never hear about them, hopefully this video doesnt get too popular! XD

Yay, I'm glad I didn't upset anybody. xd
I would further like to point out that something can be enjoyed and appreciated as its own separate work of art (case in point, Alice in Wonderland film) and doesn't have to be 100% true to the original.
But I think that movies and fandoms in general are more deeply appreciated when one is also familiar with the original concepts and recognizes the changes that have been made to it as it has evolved over the decades. heart
So why is a raven like a writing desk?

Lolita will never be "Mainstream".
This is old news.
How many girls do you think are REALLY going to look into the source of Paramore's dress? None, they're just going to flock to Hot Topic and buy the closest thing they can. That phase will last a year or two at longest, and then they'll be over it.
I don't get why people are so concerned. neutral

I think this is the truest statement pertaining to the matter at hand... However, I disagree that the phase will be over in a year. That fakey costumey Alice dress (you know the one) has been on the market for a several years at least, calling itself 'Lolita' and besmirching our good name! >_<
lol it really seems like I'm on an anti-Alice vendetta in this thread or something. xd
To be fair, there are countless other examples of such costumes. And there are so few of us true, modest lolitas to correct the masses, there isn't much we can do to affect the worldview that Lolita = sexy costume dress.
That, I firmly believe, is what upsets me moreso than anything else.

Understandable, Yossy. I mean when it comes down to it, Alice has a lot to do with lolita. So tying them together isn't crazy at all. xD
To everyone who said it was old news: I was unaware. Like I said, I don't keep up with Paramore. I hate them. Why bother stalking their videos? And I don't keep up on EGL. often times communities just make me angry -___- So I was unaware and apologize for making you (?) have to read the same thing over again. I was unaware. Again. ~
it's been said this fad will pass in the course of a year. The whole scene kid emo kid whatever trend started when I was in 7th grade. It was cool to be a scene kid out of nowhere and it's STILL popular where I am. So if I'm stuck having to look at bad head dresses, flat dresses and blouseless jumpers in the winter (lord knows they all walk through snow in flipflops, why not wear a shirt?) I will probably have to put up with it for a few years longer than one. DX
I was only concerned because lolita is a very intense (no other word for it) interest of mine. It's what I put all of my time and money into. So to see it being tossed around and thrown out there in the wrong way upsets me. I'm sorry I've pissed almost everyone off for voicing my concerns. :
