Okay so according to Genesis God created the world (sometimes the Universe) in six days and then rested on the seventh. In Exodus it rained manna for six days but none on the seventh. The seventh day is supposed to be a day of rest.

What I want to know is whether or not you think this idea of A Day of Rest is still practical for society today?

Now, I'm not saying that people should never have a day off, but for entire offices to close every week is really inefficient. For example, I was supposed to call and schedule an outing for my Girl Scout troop at this particular organization. However, I was so busy yesterday that I wasn't able to call until after 5:00pm, by that time the office was closed.

My knee-jerk reaction is then to call the following day (today) but I can't because its Sunday and the office is still closed. So, in today's corporate world is it still practical to have a day where everyone rests?

To be honest, I think that the impractical thing is to live in a corporate world.

...But that isn't answering the question.

I think a day of rest is practical beyond religious purposes. You could argue that in a historical context when much of a society's infrastructure was based in agriculture and other more "primitive" (or what are considered so) economic systems, a "day of rest" served as a much needed time for workers to relax and recuperate for the next sequence of work days. I think that same logic applies today. So long as the most essential services continue to operate, I think that at worst a day of rest is an inconvenience for some and at best a necessary opportunity to, well, rest for the hard workers that maintain the system as is throughout the rest of the work week.

I don't think it has to be derived from any kind of religious scripture, however. To me, it's only sensible to give people a break, because a happy worker is an efficient one.

I'm not saying that people don't need a day off, a day to just kickback and relax and rest. Everyone needs a day off. But I think that should be an individual thing. Its entire offices taking an entire day off. A single employee I have no issue with.

Well, I can see your point...why it is that Sunday is the near-universal "day of rest" I don't know (probably the most simple or popular of the various "religious holidays" to fall back on), and I agree that it isn't highly practical. But as I said, so long as the necessary services still run, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Maybe a bit of an annoyance at times, but it's not like the world falls into chaos every Sunday.

A big percentage of people working want Sunday off for church. If nobody went to church, then we probably wouldn't have that day almost universally off.

Hrm, I'm just saying. A god sounds like someone who does not need to eat or sleep and therefor does not need to rest.

i suppose since i don't do much on sunday except clean up a little, it can constitute as a day of rest. the bigger one for me is probably saturday, and it's not because i'm jewish, but because that's when i do all my sleep catch up from the week (i don't know why it does that, but it does. i don't wake up until like 3 pm)

I think it depends on what is meant by "rest." If "rest" means merely "to cease from motion or stop," then I guess he rested because there wasn't anything else he wanted to create. But if you mean "rest" as in "to refresh oneself or relax" then I have no idea; it doesn't seem like a perfect being would need to relax.
