Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It begins in skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, which gives skin its color. Melanin also protects the deeper layers of the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.
When people spend time in the sunlight, the melanocytes make more melanin and cause the skin to tan. This also happens when skin is exposed to other forms of ultraviolet light (such as in a tanning booth). If the skin receives too much ultraviolet light, the melanocytes may begin to grow abnormally and become cancerous. This condition is called melanoma.
The first sign of melanoma is often a change in the size, shape, or color of a mole. But melanoma can also appear on the body as a new mole. In men, melanoma most often shows up on the upper body, between the shoulders and hips and also on the head and neck. In women, melanoma often develops on the lower legs. In dark-skinned people, melanoma often appears under the fingernails or toenails, on the palms of the hands, and on the soles of the feet.
Although these are the most common places on the body for melanomas to appear, they can appear anywhere on the skin. That's why it is important to always examine your skin to check for new moles or changes in moles.
The chance of getting melanoma increases as you get older, but people of any age can get melanoma. In fact, melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults. Each year, more than 50,000 people in the U.S. learn that they have melanoma.
Melanoma is a serious and sometimes life-threatening cancer. If melanoma is found and treated in its early stages, the chances of recovery are very good. If it is not found early, melanoma can grow deeper into the skin and spread to other parts of the body. This spread is called metastasis. Once melanoma has spread to other parts of the body beyond the skin, it is difficult to treat.
Early-stage melanoma can usually be treated with surgery alone. The treatment for melanoma depends on three factors:
* the age of the person * the general health of the person * the stage of the disease
Surgery is the first treatment for all stages of melanoma (IA through IV). The tumor is removed entirely, along with some surrounding tissue (usually about ¾ of an inch all around). The surgery may be done by a dermatologist or a surgeon, and it sometimes happens as part of the diagnosis process. In some cases, a skin graft may be needed to replace skin that has been removed. If the melanoma has spread to the nearby lymph nodes, the affected lymph nodes may also be removed surgically.
Surgery is usually the only treatment needed for people with early-stage melanomas (thinner melanomas that have not spread to the lymph nodes). However, these people still need regular follow-up visits to the doctor, to make sure the melanoma has not come back and that other moles do not need biopsies.Once a person has had melanoma, there is a higher chance of getting it again.
For later-stage melanomas (thick melanomas or those that have spread to the nearby lymph nodes), other treatments besides surgery may be needed. These are called "adjuvant" treatments, and they may take the form of:
* immunotherapy * chemotherapy * radiation therapy
Melanoma that has spread to distant sites in the body, or to other organs (such as the lungs or liver) is known as Stage IV. For these patients, treatment options may be available, including clinical trials. Please discuss your options with your health care professional. The best news about melanoma is that many cases of skin cancer can be prevented by following these straightforward precautions:
~Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Because the sun's rays are strongest during this period, try to schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day, even in winter or when the sky is cloudy. You absorb UV radiation year-round, and clouds offer little protection from damaging rays.
~Wear sunscreen year-round. Sunscreens don't filter out all harmful UV radiation. While sunscreens block UVB rays very well, most don't block UVA rays. For this reason, sunscreen should be just one part of your overall sun protection strategy. Sunscreens that contain ingredients such as titanium dioxide and mexoryl do a better job at blocking UVA rays. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Use a generous amount of sunscreen on all exposed skin, including your lips, the tips of your ears, and the backs of your hands and neck. For the most protection, apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply it every two hours throughout the day. Also be sure to reapply it after swimming or exercising. Apply sunscreen to young children before they go outdoors, and teach older children and teens how to use sunscreen to protect themselves. Keep a bottle of sunscreen in your car as well as with your gardening tools, and sports and camping gear.
~Wear protective clothing. Sunscreens don't provide complete protection from UV rays. That's why it's a good idea to also wear tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs, and a broad-brimmed hat, which provides more protection than a baseball cap or visor does. Some companies also sell photoprotective clothing. Your dermatologist can recommend an appropriate brand. Don't forget sunglasses. Look for those that block both UVA and UVB rays.
~Avoid tanning beds and tan-accelerating agents. Tanning beds emit UVA rays, which may be as dangerous as UVB rays — especially since UVA light penetrates deeper into your skin and causes precancerous skin lesions.
~Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications. Some common prescription and over-the-counter drugs — including antibiotics; certain cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes medications; birth control pills; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others); and the acne medicine isotretinoin (Accutane) — can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the side effects of any medications you take. If they increase your sensitivity to sunlight, be sure to take extra precautions.
~Check your skin regularly and report changes to your doctor. Examine your skin often for new skin growths or changes in existing moles, freckles, bumps and birthmarks. With the help of mirrors, check your face, neck, ears and scalp. Examine your chest and trunk, and the tops and undersides of your arms and hands. Examine both the front and back of your legs, and your feet, including the soles and the spaces between your toes. Also check your genital area, and between your buttocks.
~Have regular skin exams. Consult your doctor for a complete skin exam every year if you're older than 40, or more often if you're at high risk of developing melanoma.

Even though this is not the actual TDM thread, the same rules apply here. So be sure to follow them please.Blaizekit RULES--------------------------------❧----O ne of the reasons why the Movement is being held within the guild this year (aside from the obvious benefits of organization) is that here we will actually be able to enforce our rules.►Don't spam. It'll just get deleted. ►Follow Gaia's ToS ►Do not quote any large blocks of text, such as any of the posts on the front page of the main thread or a team's thread. ►Please read the FAQs before asking a question. That way we can be sure that we have plenty of time to answer any unusual or specific questions, instead of answering the same common ones over and over. ►Contacting Blaize/crew: We are likely to be very busy around this time. Questions and Yellow Wall entries will have priority over any art or banners you send, or affiliate/Turn TDM requests. Please be patient with us. ►Be supportive of one another! Try to get along. ►And most importantly, strive for positivity. I encourage you to share your stories and feelings concerning cancer, cancer awareness, and the like, but this will not be a pity-party. Many people may be going through cancer themselves or seeing someone they love dealing with it. We’re here to hope for the best. heart In addition to those rules, here are a few more that apply directly to our team thread:
1. Please attempt to type normally. (aka no txt talk please! Spelling errors are understandable. I make them myself all the time and I'm in college. ^^;; ) 2. Please don't spam or advertise in the thread. If you'd like your art shop, charity, etc. to become an affiliate of the team, simply pm me and I will be happy make it known by adding an affiliate section. 3. Keep bumping to a minimum. If you're the only one around and our team thread is at the bottom, feel free to bump it up but don't obsessively do it. It will not be rewarded. 4. Please don't beg for gold. Instead enter one or several of the team or event contests. ^^ They all ask reasonably simple things of you, you have a chance to win gold or an awesome prize and you won't annoy anyone.
Note: There is a chance that other rules will appear if problems occur. Welcome and Contents <> About Melanoma <> Rules <> Team Information <> Links <> Banners <> Memorial Wall <> Contests <> Contest Entries <> Contest Winners <> Members

Follow this link to get to the guild sponsored contests. In addition to those, here are a few team contests we will be having throughout the month...All of the Team Melanoma Contests, expect the First Post on Page Contest, have ended. Look for the winners to be posted soon!Contest has ended. Winners posted below!
Create a banner for Team Melanoma. I'd like it to include our support ribbon but it doesn't have too. Entries in this contest will be judged based on how well it is put together and fits with our team. So even if you don't have a lot of experience creating banners (like me), you could still win. PM me entries with the Subject: Team Melanoma: Banner, and include your banner (via photobucket or some other online photo hosting site). Since I think fewer people will enter this one, I will allow team members to submit 2 different entries at this point in time. Winners will be chosen by me and several other team captains.
Prizes: 1st Place - Black Body Dye + Deluxe Yellow Daffodil Bouquet 2nd Place - Long-Stem Black Rose + Yellow Daffodil Bouquet 3rd Place - 10k + Single Yellow Daffodil Bouquet Contest Begins: April 1 Contest has Ended.
Draw your avatar or your OC or whoever you'd like in such a way that it represents Team Melanoma or The Daffodil Movement. Please keep the artwork PG-13. Again send a PM to me with the subject: Team Melonoma: Art with your entry included in it (hosted via photobucket, etc.). One entry per team member. Winners will be picked by me and other team captains. Note: Do No Commission Someone Else To Draw Something For You And Then Submit It. You Will Be Called Out And Disqualified!!!
Prizes: 1st Place - Nitemare Sash + Deluxe Yellow Daffodil Bouquet 2nd Place - Black Heaven Unmentionables + Yellow Daffodil Bouquet 3rd Place - 10k + Single Yellow Daffodil Bouquet Contests Begins: April 1 Contest Has Ended.
Use TekTek to create an avatar that represents Team Melanoma. Our team color is black, so I would suggest using it but it is not required. Since TekTek does not have it so that you can be hold a daffodil bouquet, you can edit the avatar so that it is. But keep edits to a minimum (color changing is fine). I'd like to be able to tell most of the items you used are actually real Gaia items. Send your entry in a pm to be with the subject reading: Team Melanoma: Avatar with your tekteked avatar in it. One entry per team member allowed. You can edit your entry a maximum of 2 times. Winners will be picked by myself and several other team captains.
Special Note: Avatars submitted to the team avatar contest can also be submitted to the guild contest. For more information follow this link.
Prizes: 1st Place - Uncanny Form + Deluxe Yellow Daffodil Bouquet 2nd Place - Superior Form + Yellow Daffodil Bouquet 3rd Place - 10k + Single Yellow Daffodil Bouquet Contest Begins: April 1 Contest Has Ended
