At a Glance

Name: “King” Dennis Goodwin

Nicknames: King, Majesty, Lord

Gender: Male

Age: 37

Birthday: February 12

Sign: Aquarius

Gemstone: Amethyst

Bloodtype: O

Occupation: King of Destiny City (Hobo with the occasional odd job)

Fav. Food: Warm and fresh

Hated Food: Rotten

Hobbies:

  • Making rounds -- As King, it is Dennis's duty to keep up with his kingdom. He frequently makes rounds about the city, stopping to talk to people, catch up on gossip, read newspapers, and feed pidgeons.

  • Excalibur -- Excalibur is not sword, no, it’s a harmonica; a shiny harmonica. In desperate times, Dennis will play Excalibur and hope for money. Some have teased him about it being cliché and others have told him that he’d make more money with another instrument, but Dennis refuses to abandon Excalibur. Besides, a guitar wouldn’t fit so neatly in his pocket.

  • Reading -- Dennis loves to read. Libraries are one of the few free forms of entertainment left, plus they have air-conditioning; Dennis takes advantage of this. As King, he believes in being well-read, and has read most of the classics: Homer, Ovid, etc. He's dabbles in philosophy - good to know how others think - and war history - good to learn from past mistakes. What Dennis really, truly loves are stories of fair maidens, knights in shining armor, and venerable kings. These stories of a golden age, gone but not forgotten, and Dennis is determined to see it restored!

  • Gambling -- The reason Dennis is a bum is because he gambles all his money away. He is convinced that, as King, he will hit the jackpot one day, but in the meantime he's forced to live on the streets.

Virtues:

  • Chivalrous -- Dennis knows how to treat a lady right. He opens doors and pulls out chairs. He tips his hat in greeting. Girls are greeted as “young ladies” and women as “milady” and “Madame.” He doesn’t curse, spit, or drink around ladies and would protect a woman if she were ever attacked in his presence. As for those young lads that don't treat ladies right, he'll gently reprimand them, then seek to teach by example.

  • Patient -- It’s hard to be King in this day in age. Few people are willing to actually listen to Dennis, and some even have the nerve to say that he isn’t king! Nevertheless, Dennis is patient, preferring to wait and earn his peoples’ devotion rather then to rule over them like some sort of dictator.

Dennis is patient in other ways as well. He can wait patiently both in lines and in lobbies. He can be patient when talking to nonbelievers, or when trying to explain his ideas to those that seem a bit slow on the uptake.

  • Self-Assured -- Although he's not arrogant about it, Dennis is normally very sure of himself. He's been the King of Destiny City for years, and laughed at for just as long. The laughter, the taunts, the jibes; none of it deters him.

  • Benign -- Dennis really is rather nice and harmless. He’s not prejudiced and treats his subjects as near equals rather then inferiors. Sure, on occasion he talks about hangings and beheadings, but he’d never actually do it. In fact, it’s extremely unusual for Dennis to be violent at all, unless he or a woman is attacked.

Flaws:

  • Delusional -- Dennis thinks that he’s the King of Destiny City; no, really. He considers himself a good, wise, patient, and benevolent king – how else would he account for his living conditions? – but king nevertheless. For some reason being King doesn't count as job experience, so Dennis has a hard time getting a job.

In order to continue thinking that he is King, Dennis has become very good at deluding himself. He knows that he is King. He knows that his loyal subjects will provide for him in his time of need. He also knows that eventually the disbelieving masses will see the error in their ways and shall kneel before him.

  • Stuck in time -- Dennis is old-fashioned and out-of-time. He thinks women need to dress themselves with more respect and that children should listen to their elders. He disapproves of P.D.A.'s and disrespectful children. He thinks technology is erroding social values and that the world has become oversexed. He also likes to use words such as "alas" and "ergo."

Physical Description

Eyes: Reddish-brown [x]

Hair: Gray, choppy, just past shoulder blades. Pulled into a scruffy ponytail like this.

Face: He has a 5 o’clock shadow.

Body:

Style: Mismatched, patched, and worn; whatever he can get his hands on.

History:

As a young child, Dennis had a great imagination. He could amuse himself for hours with just a couple of paperclips. He loved to dress up like his favorite characters, taking it one step further as he got into acting. He loved being on the stage, loved the artistic outlet that acting provided and the escape inherent in it and decided to make a career of it.

Things went well at first. Dennis got accepted into an acting school and enjoyed his classes. He met a sweet young girl named Wendy in one of his classes and fell in love with her. They dated for two years, marrying just before his Senior year. That same year he landed an important role in the Seniors' "Grand Finale" play at school. After the play, instead of immediately going out to celebrate with the other actors, he went to go check on his wife, who had insisted she was too ill to attend the play. He caught her in their apartment with his friend and former roommate.

Dennis was devestated. He couldn't bear to divorce her, to admit to that final reality, so instead he turned to books and booze. He continued to avoid reality, drinking his money away and avoiding his wife until she finally sent him the divorce papers. He didn't sign them until a lawyer showed up at his apartment.

Unable to hold a steady job, much less act, Dennis eventually found himself living in homeless shelters. He wandered about the city looking like a mad man, ranting about how he was Arthur and that his Queen had betrayed him. People that knew of him thought he was a loon, some mockingly referring to him as "King Dennis." Although he's never admitted to it, there's a good chance that drugs contributed to his darkest days.

One day, Dennis got a wake-up call. He was either ill, drunk, or both - his story changes - a young hooligan tried to make off with his shopping basket. Dennis didn't notice, but the stray dog that had taken to following him around - Dennis called her Mother Hen - did notice and attacked the hooligan. The hooligan shot and killed her before turning the gun on Dennis. The boy didn't have the guts to kill another human, but he did make off with Dennis' basket.

It was then that Denis realized that something was wrong with society. There had to be; why else were youth turning out like that? Slowlt but surely, Dennis sobered up, and began to try to show people by example how they should act. People found him pompous and funny and increasingly called him "King," but Dennis accepted their jeers with good grace, going so far as to act along with the title. People began to offer "tributes" to King Dennis, and while Dennis never left the streets, he wasn't so bad off anymore. In fact, he became something of a signature quirk of Destiny City, and that suited him just fine.

Oookay so this is my crit I have EVER done soo I'm just going to give you a little of my own opinions.

I noticed you couldn't figure out something for her since she has no ambition. Or more of a "go with the flow." Maybe Apathy would be the word? If not then maybe dictionary.com has something else xd

This maybe just becasue I'm tired (probably is) but as I read reliable and loyal for you're Senshi, they seems to sound very familiar. Maybe that is what you were going for, I'm not sure rofl

Over all I love the personalities you chose for both characters. Very fitting on both parts since I can see mars and yet see a different person all at the same time ^^ Oh and I adore the colors you chose for her outfit. Love all of the warm colors you chose ^^ The design you chose are also very fascination and I love the jewelery. I can so see a parallel mars wearing that.

Cool unique attacks. I like the different ideas you put that can be used in the future ^^ And I really love the "what if and why" at the end. Makes everything soo very clear about these two characters. I was going to ask you about these things as well and they were answer right at the end. Very cleaver ^^ I might have to steal this idea and use it in mine. Makes things a lot easier to explain. 3nodding

So overall, very good job and keep up the good work. I would love to see this character come to life the way you have portrayed here ^^ heart

Hey Holy,

Terribly sorry for not giving a crit earlier, but here I am!

Tammy:

I rather like Tammy, she sounds like fun!

I do have to say I think if you're going between Self-Confident or Maternal you should go with Maternal. This can help give her a deeper personality.

One virtue I'm always wary of is Charismatic though. This could really just be me but... it's a good virtue but it really depends on others more than the character with it since Charisma is more of what their outlook on someone is than someone's outlook on his or herself. It makes sense for her character, just something to think about though.

For flaws "Innocent" seems to be sticking out. When you think of someone that gossips and loves to have fun and go clubbing you often don't think "innocent". I can see gullible working on it's own which can add to why she gossips, after all if you think something is the truth, why not talk about it? The other flaws flow together and I can't find any conflicts there.

White hair = lovely.

Ares:

I like the brashness you have going here. C: It really shows the "God of War" part of Ares, I'd almost like to see more of that come out in her.

For virtues, you should expand on "Loyal" and "Reliable" a bit. What makes those traits unique to her? Many senshi share these virtues. "Soldier, not a lady" is a little confusing... Does this mean that she's skilled or...?

Flaws check out, though "More bark than bite" is also a little confusing. Does it mean that she's all talk...?

Overall I love the direction you're going in. It does need a little fleshing, but you've got a good solid ground to build up from. The colors and ideas for attacks are great, I can't wait to see what you decide on! Also, good work on the expansion bits, it's good to read on her relationships and how Ares would affect her and how she would affect Ares. <3

her virtues are all very good, but I find them very generic. Sure, they are all relatively logical, but they don't really give me a sense of a strong personal quality. What makes Tammy's maternal instinct any different from another character with maternal instincts? How is she more out-going than any other socially adapted person? I dunno, I just feel as though she needs a more personal-ness to her.

Her flaws seem a little weak (but then again, I might be leaning toward flaws that are serious-er issues in a person's life) they all fit quite well, and to be honest her major character flaw seems to be that she's vain (which isn't odd at all considering she is a social gal) the fact that she doesn't worry about the future doesn't seem like a flaw so much as a typical young girl.

Ares wise, I like the soft inner gooeyness and the hard outer shell, but all her other flaws seem to be just extensions of this one first flaw. Does she have any other flaws? Something that isn't just she's hard to deal with/tell when she's joking? Other than her social disposition what defines her?

I dunno-- this is all just my personal thoughts. I could be quite off. But I hope some of this helps

Start crits for His Majesty, King Dennis.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 31, 2010 2:14 am

King was a supar-fun rofile to read~ /attracted by your title *A*

The only thing I have to offer is that the confidence that he must maintain to keep the idea that he is 'king'~ I'd like to see that elaborated on! Or the fact that he sounds like he would push his habits onto others if he doesn't approve, such as his politeness to woman. Is it confidence, or even arrogance? I'd imagine that he'd have a lot of people laughing or demeaning, or plain out being skeptical over what he believes in! However, I imagine that he must be very confident to maintain his ideals!

As a side note; the flaw 'king of destiny city' also implies that he overlooks his own flaws in favor of seeing a image of himself that he likes. In a way, he might be denying himself, does this denial extend to others?

And secondly, I'd love to see a reason / hobby for the way he thinks. I don't imagine his personality was totally engrianed in him from the start xD~~ Would he have read picture books / fairytales / movies with kings/princes? What did he model his behavior from? Does he still like things with that type of influence?

Just thought I'd toss some stuff out there~

Good points! I think I've touched on all of those now. Glad you like King Dennis. :3

I think "delusional" and "King of Destiny City" are too similar to be separate flaws. He looks like fun, though.

I also want to express concern that his profile right now teeters him into mental illness played for laughs territory. Dennis's delusion that he is really truly King of Destiny City is a major delusion, and that really makes me a little uncomfortable if you're going to play that trait as humor. Thanks!

I'll merge those two flaws then.

I do get what you're saying, but I don't see it that way. This is a shop full of teenage serial killers. Not only that, many of them think that by hurting and killing others, they're doing something good. To me, a man that thinks he's King hardly compares. neutral

I must confess, my idea isn't completely original. I got the idea after reading Christopher Moore's "A Dirty Job," which features a character that fancies himself the Emperor of San Francisco. Now that I think about it, I should probably give him credit somewhere.

Hey, have you read about Emperor Norton? I think he's the man that book might be mentioning--he's a real life figure =)! I figure that it could probably help you some in fleshing out Dennis a bit more.

Ooh, so he was a real guy? Neat!

I doubt King Dennis would be as into politics as Emperor Norton was, but it does give me some ideas.
