Donald fumbled through his bag for his keys and opened the door to the Studio. He shared a studio loft with a roomate in his Printmaking classes. He was in his second year of a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking- etching to be specific. He had met Monica when they were both BFA students, and recently they had decided that it was time for him to move out of his piece-of-s**t apartment into something with room to work. The room was littered with half finished work, sketches, work areas. There was a couch and two beds, a kitchen area and the rest was a shared space to create. The far wall was brick with a small fireplace across from the couch, and the adjacent wall made up mostly of a large window.
He threw his bag down onto the couch and went to the stove to make himself a cup of tea. Monica was crosslegged on the table, filling out a crossword puzzle and gave him a half smile as she looked up. He filled the kettle and turned on the stove, pulling back a chair to sit down on while he waited. "How's it goin', partner?" she asked as she set her paper down on the table.
He reached into the his pocket and pulled out the necklace. "I got this for Emma", he showed her, passing her the necklace. She ran it between her fingers, looking at all the charms. It was a strange necklace, and she reflected that on her face. It peaked her interest, and she slid it over her dreads and onto her neck.
"This is right dope, man." She fiddled with it absentmindedly. "It's got a really confortable feel to it. Where did you get it?"
"This little shop. Like a second hand place- a pawn shop or something." He shrugged. "I've seen it before but never really checked it out. Some okay s**t." Remembering his conversation with Switch, he added in, "She gave it to me for free. Kind of sketchy lady, but whatevz'."
The kettle went off. He poured himself a glass of hot water and went through the cupbords for teabags.
"All we've got left is loose," called Monica as she walked off to the couch, placing the necklace back on the table.
