animated or bay who did a better job of updating him?
i would say animated dont care for instruments but being a tricked out van work for me plus its like his cybertron alt mod.
as being a satellite is cool and all but it was done for ShockWave in enrgon and that was a lot cooler.

Bay From a purely aesthetic standpoint I'd say Bay, at least the toy. Since you really didn't get to see much more then a giant satellite raping another satellite with tentacles. I mean, you saw his face and the interesting detailing there, but for the most part, to see the full picture, I'd still have to point towards the toy.
I think the satellite, while a b***h choice for now -- since I hope they don't just shove his aft into space and forget about him or have useless. "DECEPTICONS, GO LEFT." Type crap. . . is a great choice for him. Mainly due to the fact that he's SOUNDWAVE, the name screams something technological outside of cars.
Though, all 'looks' to the side. He was sorta boring and useless other than a major role in taking out the Autobots -- in which I thought was 'godmodding' but, hell, no one really looks into s**t that much. Not like anyone can blast him off the satellite anytime soon, he's kinda all powerful up there with his tentacles raping it.
Animated I think the instruments in animated was an interesting touch. His alt mode is interesting, but still -- while it might sit right with you, just doesn't for me for some odd reason. It wasn't horrible, but I was raising a brow at it, due to the fact of his original... well 'line'. Basically, this version wasn't horrible -- I just didn't like the design as much though. Maybe it was the fact his aqua features didn't sit well with me, when I prefer it to be darker in color rather than "oh god, undersea time".
Again, with looks aside. I think I still like him. He has more screen time and he plays a fraggin' 'keytar'. It's amazing. Not to mention, I love Animated and the storyline, so -- yeah.
SO, IN CONCLUSION: I think both are 'equal' in their own way.
--- Now if this was about Shockwave ( Since he's in anything but Bay almost -- aside from the game -- but also in Animated. So like any other storyline x Animated ), hands down I'd pick Animated Shockwave ---

If there was an option of neither, I would have picked that LOL. Given the circumstances I will go with Bay just because Soundwave looks awesome in it despite his pathetic role of communications only.

In Animated, Soundwave wasn't anything but a glorified Furby.
Bay-Soundy all the way.

Agreeing with Pumpkinn here. The 'Wave cons have always struck me as the creepier of all the Decepticons. Bay's Soundwave was cool, but since he was given little to no lines I have to give the credit to Industrial Light and Magic for making him that way(Love that company, they put out the best CG! heart ) As for the Animated, I love the series, but haven't gotten very far in watching it (only on episode 22 right now). Does he ever come back after being whupped by Bulkhead, or were we just show a cassette for nothing?
To sum up: -Bay Shockwave wins for aesthetic value -Animated Shockwave wins for actually having a threatening part.

Soundwave is so much more then just the Communications Officer he was always in the thick of battle not on the sidelines or floating in space having his way with random space junk.
the whole satellite thing watching everything and not really doing anything is more a Shockwave thing to do and lets face it his alt form is a big gun and whats cooler then a satellite cannon?
also when you think of sound satellites don’t really come to mind at all, but a van blasting music on the other hand. and when pigs, fbi or who ever is spying on some one what do they us a van.

Personally, I liked the Animated Soundwave. Soundwave from ROTF really didn't do much. At least in Animated, Soundwave did so much more. Plus, TRANSFORMING GUITARS!

Both do have good points...
Bay- Very creepy and tentacles are always good... (fangirl), even his toy makes him seem like he is raping that satellite... I did very much appreciate getting Frank Welker to do the voice. That man can seriously make any noise or voice ever....
Animated- A bit...is campy the right word? Here he actually used music (lol, literally) to fight. I don't really like his design, but the art style is growing on me, like Animated is in general.
I would have to side with Bay on this one...but only for Soundwave. I agree with Junio on the Arcee front.
