Calypso wandered the far side of the sister river, scuffing at rocks with a paw as she went and knocking them into the water. Life was unfair... everything was unfair. She hated this sneaking around... always with her head down, her eyes down, trying to stay out of sight. It wasn't fair that she should have to, while all the boys get to run around and laugh and play. She hated them, she hated the lionesses that just gave way for them, and most of all, she hated the males that had chased away her mother... a lioness she could barely remember as just a dark form with ruby eyes. The dark cub gave a viscous swipe at a rock, sending it splashing into the rippling water. Everyone else had a mother... everyone else got to do as they pleased... It wasn't fair.

This was Grendel's first time out of the den by himself. Usually when he went out he had his father beside him. Whenever his father was there, Grendel felt as if he could do anything. Nothing ever frightened him, nothing ever made him worry; life was good, so long as his father was there. Even when his mother took him out, which was rare, he felt confident because she belonged to him. His mother had to do what he said and she would protect him, because her life depended on that. It was a feeling of power.
Now Grendel felt upset, he felt worried. When he tried to play with a group of male cubs by the river that were chasing a mouse they wouldn't let him into their game. Why? Was there something wrong with him? He had never been rejected before.
If his father was there, he would have made those other cubs play with him and then they would have been friends. Instead Grendel found himself walking alone with his shadow and his hatred beside the river. He would have gone home by now, but he felt too ashamed of himself. Suddenly something splashed into the river. Grendel lifted his head and saw a young lioness walking toward him, unaware of his presence. For a moment he thought she was Mihr... but no, this lioness was too pretty.
She was also a stranger. His father told him to beware of females in groups, but this female was all alone. Grendel hid himself in the bushes just in case. He would watch her for a little while, then decide if he wanted to play.

The dark female flopped down grumpily to sit and watch the water, glaring at it as it rippled merrily, light flashing on the surface. What right did it have to be so dang happy?
Reaching, Calypso heaved another rock into the water with a bat of her paw, adding a little umph to it as though she could punish the river for being happy and carefree. Life was so hard for the young heir... so few friends, so much anger and fear. She hardly knew what life was like otherwise... as far as she knew, it had always been like this.
She'd heard whispers, though... things that comforted her. Everyone said she was so young, too young to need to worry so much, but... she still heard things. Things like how the queen was out there, preparing and gathering allies. That she was coming back, that she wouldn't abandon them all to this fate. 'Course, it didn't help on days like this. It just seemed like a story.

Gradually he started to gain some confidence over the situation, especially as he realized they were alone. When the young lioness came near Grendel popped his head out of the bushes with a loud rustle of leaves. It wasn't meant to frighten her. Grendel was still curious. Once he was sure she'd noticed him, he smiled a little nervously and said, "Hello!"

Calypso jumped and layed her ears back as the head popped out of the bushes, hissing at it through her teeth. When he did nothing, she relaxed a little, just glaring at him as she gave him a once over with her old-gold eyes.
"What do you want?" She said grumpily, though her tone was tempered by the fact that she didn't really want the attention of the males on her. It made things harder when she was noticed, and snapping a cub would do that.
"I thought I was alone." Calypso said quietly, turning back to the water, but keeping him in the corner of her eye. This place was supposed to be empty... now she had to share it and that did not please her.

Grendel clumsily freed himself from the bushes. The twigs stuck in his fur and he had to shake them off. He glared back at her even as she turned away from him. "You should be nice to me. My dad is the biggest, toughest male in this pride and he wouldn't be very happy if you were mean to me."
He came closer to the girl and looked her up and down. "You know, you're really pretty. Red and black are good colors."
He meant that sincerely, but there was something wrong in the way he said it, as if he'd decided she was too pretty not to belong to him.

Calypso made a face as he spoke, mouthing his words supposedly where he couldn't see them.
"Well, MY mom is the biggest and best of the lionesses. And that's way better than some stupid dad." She said over her shoulder, her words holding a distinctly childish tone. It wasn't often she got to really interact with other cubs, besides maybe Lulu, and she hadn't seen her in a long while...
She glanced sidelong at him with her old gold eyes, a frown pulling her face into a pout. Pretty, huh? No one had ever told her that before... well, some of the lionesses had, like Kannon, but they took care of her and it seemed just something you were supposed to say to your cubs. To have him say it took on a new meaning for her, and while she still hated him with venom, she was perversely pleased. He was one of THEM, and yet she found she cared what he thought of her.
"Yeah well... my mom was black with red eyes, so OF COURSE they're good colors. They're the best colors, because she was the best." She felt a sly smile spread over her face, noting that Grendel was more purple than red and black... which pleased her almost as much as being told she was pretty.

Grendel's mouth hung open. No one had ever spoken about his father like that before. He felt angry and confused all at once, but mostly angry. His tail whipped around as he clawed the ground in front of her. "Y-you can't talk about my dad that way! I want you to take back what you just said, right now! Take it back, I mean it!"
He felt so awkward having to defend his father. If Soro was here, he would eat this other cub up for talking about him this way. Grendel was too small to eat her. He fought his siblings all the time and he wanted to fight Calypso, but he wasn't used to being around other cubs and the idea of fighting a stranger made him uneasy.

His sudden agitation both pleased and frightened her, though she'd never have admitted it. Her ears pinned back at his words and her eyes widened, making her look more wild than afraid.
"I can talk however I want!" She hissed at him, feeling a thrill for defying one of those dastardly males. Had it been an adult, she might have thought about playing nice, but this young male... the odds were good that they were evenly matched and there was even a chance she could thrash him if she wanted to... and that made her feel bolder than normal. If anything, this was rather fun. "Males are bad! They took over the pride and made all the lionesses sad! They're mean and stupid and I hate them!"
Her body shifted into a crouch as she tensed, her eyes wider still. If he was going to try to enact some sort of revenge for her out-spoken ways, she was going to be ready for anything.
