For those of us who do not have/ can't afford a fully Japanese compatible keyboard I found a virtual keyboard that works wonders. It is an online application and it is free. http://www.gate2home.com/?language=jaGood things about it: 1. It is free 2. It works really well with other programs and doesn't slow down your computer(That I know of) 3. It also has other languages 4. Also has kanji Bad things: 1. You should probably know the general kanji that you want to use. 2. Does not have dictionary, so any words you don't know you may want to have a dictionary available.

They don't really use any special keyboards in Japan except for a couple of keys that control the input method, and there are alternative keystrokes to do that on a normal 104-key keyboard.

I don't think my computer has Japanese as it's setting... I know it has Spanish, and Dutch, but...
Does this translate what you say? Like, if you post a sentence in English, will it translate that, and then put it into Hiragana and Kanji? I'm still studying, and trying to memorize so I can read. sweatdrop

It will type your stuff in hiragana, katakana and if you press space after typing your hiragana it will turn it into Kanji. To change your keyboard to Japanese or add a Japanese option onto your keyboard, go to control panel, clock, language and region-> change keyboards or other output methods-> change keyboards -> then just add the Japanese keyboard. (Vista, dunno for other stuff) You switch from English to the Japanese keyboard by clicking on it at the bottom right (or wherever you decide to put it) or use the shortcut alt + shift.

That's pretty useful! I can't really change my language settings, because I'll probably forget to turn it back... ;/

Wow, thanks. biggrin Yes, I have Vista, so that is very helpful. smile And I agree with Dizraeli-Croix... Haha, I might forget how to turn it back. But I'll write down what I did so that I can change it when I'm done. smile Thank you!

Yeah a virtual keyboard isn't actually necessary. It's built into most computers. I'm sure it's already been explained a dozen times.
btw. shift alt will switch you from english to japanese when using it. I found that much nicer than using the mouse all the time. and f7 changes it to katakana.
