Japanese must learn ___ chinese characters (kanji) to be literate.
If someone could fill in the blank for me, that would be great! ^.^ I'm doing a scavender hunt and I found every single problem, but that one. ToT
Help please?!

Does anyone know how many kanji students learn throughout school? I think its the number above but I am unsure. My sensei told the class once, but I forgot it sweatdrop PM me if you know. Thanks

uuh I'm not sure but I think I saw somewhere that to understand a basic text, you need to know about 500, but to be "literate" I don't know.. :/

In order to get into the high school, Japanese students have to know about 1200 kanji...I only know about 400... cry Man! I have a long way to go!!

For the ikuy nouryouko nihongo kentei (Japanese Proficency Test, Level 1) the official number is just below 2500 kanji and associated bushu (radicals). News papers often require over 2000 complete (by complete I mean knowing all reading and all dictionary forms). Ateji (kanji with irregular readings like tabako, couhee, azuki, etc.)
The highest level of the zenkoku kanji tentei (National Kanji Certification Test) required over 3000 modern and classical koutengo kanji and all the bushu and their names and meanings.
I can`t say if these numbers are the most up to date because the language ministry reivses the written language almost every year but I think they are fairly current.

There definitely are that number official Kanji, but I do vaguely remember reading something about there being a certain number of them that were required to be learned while in grade school... I think it was 800, but I can't be positive...
