What say you? Should a professor teach a class like that? Was the chalk not breaking just a coincidence? Any other comment?

That's an idiot professor who shouldn't be licensed to flip burgers, with logic that poor. Especially as a "philosopher".

What exactly is the argument here? "If God exists, God will protect this chalk upon sarcastic request. God did not protect the chalk, therefore God can not exist"- It's so full of holes, and fallacies, it's ridiculous. So this makes me question the idea that such a professor could exist- Keep in mind, he has to string full sentences together to get through a job interview.

Besides this probably being made up, I don't see how it's amazing. Amazing would be if the chalk stopped in mid air. That would be a miracle. A chalk bouncing off someone's shoe is not.

That was pointless, I would have told him that his logic was incorrect in assuming that "god" would stop the chalk from breaking. He is the real fool if he exists. Personally, I would have walked out on his class, and complained. That logic shouldn't be used as an argument against god.

I wouldn't be surprised to find the professor said more during the course then that. That was probably just a story passed on by word of mouth based on a real event. Most stories have an origin, but it easily could've happened.

On the day someone finally stands up in support of it? It's interesting if nothing else. And I don't think people usually make up stories for nothing. It's probably based off a real event if nothing else.

I really doubt that was the entire class, but yeah the chalk argument wasn't great, to say the least.

It's not made up for nothing. But that doesn't mean it's based on a real event. I mean a professor running out of a class? Not to mention a professor that stupid being allowed to teach.

This story is meant to strengthen the faith of christians, that doesn't make it true or even based on truth. Is The Turtle and The Hare based on a true event? No. Does it have a purpose? Yes.

But in any case, it's still rather unimpressive.

Word of mouth tends to wreck a story. We don't know much about the professor. And no, I wouldn't be surprised to hear he ran out of the classroom. My mom's a teacher, and I've heard of crazier stuff happening.

The Turtle and the Hare was clearly made up. It sounds like the type of story you would make up to tell. Something like this sounds more based in reality.

Then why are you wasting time talking about it? neutral

Oh, I've seen this one before. It's a cute story, but I doubt it's true.
But every time I see it I'm more surprised about the part that states that not one of his students ever stood up to him.
I would, and I'm an atheist.

LOL. I pray I never have a professor like that, what a jackass.

Everyone has a freedom to religion, and until we're dead we never will TRUELY know. All we can do is rely on our faith or logic.

And...i dont believe that happened. But its an okay story.

Interestng. But there are many factors that go into why the chalk didnt break. It wasnt a miracle. it could have been purely conicidence. I think religion should stay out of school, anyway. But I would love to have that professor! Im ecelcctic pagan, I'd enjoy a debate with him.

I agree that this professor's "argument" is a silly base to disprove God.... It's not like God is obligated to response to every mocker's request. And besides, God is more likely to find ways to reach to the people who genuinely want to get to know him, rather than to those who already made the decision that God doesn't exist and are not open to other possibilities. It's not only a matter of "proof" but also a matter of what you want to believe.

Agreed. I found the story quite unrealistic and more like the stories I heard in sunday school. It may be impressive to a child or to someone who wants to hear about the greatness of God but I am neither of those.

As would I. I would hate to see such stubborn attitude go unchallanged especially in a professor, especially when he is attacking beliefs of others. xd
