It's Cool To Be Blue: Team Colon Cancer

User Image

Welcome to the Blue-man and Blue-woman group!
As part of The Daffodil Movement (TDM) (someone remind me to fix this url when Blaize has moved everything where she wants it), the gaiaonline movement to increase cancer awareness, this thread focuses on Colon Cancer. For those who don't know, The Daffodil Movement covers information on many cancers. If you feel that you want to take part in the event, but don't want to hear/talk about colons, I suggest following the above link to find the cancer support team that is right for you. If you do want to join us, post your request, and I will take care of the rest.^^

For those of you who have made this your team, here's a helpful guide to this first page.

Also, if you have made this your team, you might be familiar with colon cancer because either you or someone you love is or has struggled with it. If not, you know from last year's movement that one of the ways we try to show support for cancer awareness is to dress avatars in the color matching our ribbon, and you think you can sport dark blue for the whole month XD. As such some information on colon cancer has been provided below.
For those who don't know about colon cancer the following is some lovely info on the disease.

Colon Cancer, also known as Colorectal Cancer, is cancer that appears in the Colon (or large intestine) or Rectum. This cancer starts out as Polyps or "abnormal growths of tissue projecting from a mucous membrane (Wikipedia)." Many Polyps are benign. Occasionally, a Polyp will start out benign and then become cancerous. Left to run its course, the cancer will eat through the colon wall and then spread through the lymph vessels.

Symptoms

There is not a set of symptoms that say that a person specifically has Colorectal Cancer and not some other condition. However, here are some symptoms that generally accompany Colorectal Cancer:
* Rectal bleeding or blood in or on the stool
* Change in bowel habits or stools that are narrower than usual
* Stomach discomfort (bloating, fullness or cramps)
* Diarrhea, constipation or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
* Weight loss for no apparent reason
* Constant fatigue
* Vomiting

The best way to prevent Colon cancer is to get a colonoscopy. The first time you really need to think about getting this done is when you turn 50 (or forty if you have a family history of Colon Cancer). A Colonoscopy is where the doctor sticks a camera up your buttocks, explores your colon (or large intestines), and removes abnormal growths (called polyps) that are usually benign but have the potential of becoming cancerous. While this may sound uncomfortable, you will drugged up enough that you won't be.

Just take it from these guys:

There are a few other screenings you could do, but none are as effective as the colonoscopy.
guaiac-based fecal occult blood testing (gFOBT), fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) and stool DNA testing (sDNA), barium enema and computed tomography (CT) colonography. Still, most doctors will recommend colonoscopy to screen for colorectal cancer. [A sigmoidoscopy is a similar tool but only visualizes the first third of the colon.]

Then there are some everyday things you can do that reportedly help prevent it:

* Eliminate red and processed meats or become a vegetarian
* Eat 9 fistfuls of fruits and vegetables a day and include blueberries, which may contain a colon protective chemical
* Eat a diet rich in whole grains and high in fiber (or low-fat and high-fiber diets)
* Reduce or eliminate alcohol
* Take a daily aspirin (review with physician first)
* Exercise at least 30 minutes on most days
* Maintain a healthy weight
* Take vitamin D and folic acid
* Maintain health cholesterol profile
* Dont take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines to prevent colon cancer if you have average risk for it. (Taking more than 300 mg a day of aspirin and similar drugs may cause dangerous gastrointestinal bleeding and heart problems in some people.)
* Eat probiotics -- yogurt miso and other fermented soy products -- foods that contain live bacterial cultures that protect the gut flora

Treatment depends partly on the stage of the cancer.
* Stage 0: Very early cancer on the innermost layer of the intestine
* Stage I: Cancer is in the inner layers of the colon
* Stage II: Cancer has spread through the muscle wall of the colon
* Stage III: Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes
* Stage IV: Cancer that has spread to other organs

In general, treatments may include:

* Chemotherapy to kill cancer cells
* Surgery to remove cancer cells
* Radiation therapy to destroy cancerous tissue

Stage 0 colon cancer may be treated by removing the cancer cells, often during a colonoscopy. For stages I, II, and III cancer, more extensive surgery is needed to remove the part of the colon that is cancerous. (Colon resection: is when the diseased part of the bowel is removed and the two healthy sections of the colon are reattached, also known as end-to-end anastomosis.) If an anastomosis is not possible because of the extent of the disease or its location, the surgeon creates a colostomy. A temporary colostomy (a surgical opening made through the abdomen to provide a new path for waste elimination. ) is made when the colon needs longer to heal after surgery and the anastomosis is performed later.

Almost all patients with stage III colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery for approximately 6 - 8 months.

Chemotherapy is also used to treat patients with stage IV colon cancer.

Although radiation therapy is occasionally used in patients with colon cancer, it is usually used in combination with chemotherapy for patients with stage III rectal cancer.

There are plenty of things to do here to show your support for Colon Cancer User ImageAwareness.

1. Sign up for this team by posting "I want to be part of Team Colon" in this thread.
2. Equip your avatar with a daffodil bouquet (if you can't afford one, send a trade to TDM Event Mule, titled "I would like a bouquet," and we will give you one free of charge)
3. Dress your avatar(s) in dark blue outfits during the month of April
4. Show your team spirit by chatting in this thread and participating in the User ImageTDM Contests (please read rules and FAQ's first.)
5. Participate in the team contests
6. Put banners in your signatures or post styles
7. Recruit new members
8. Remind those members who may have forgotten over the month-long event that we need their team spirit

In these contests you are competing against members from all of the cancer teams

Tektek Contest: One of our most popular contests is back! Make a tektek in your team's colors.
The best from each team (and sometimes runners-up) will win.
The prize: At least 20k. It may be more depending on donations.
Dates: The tektek contest will open Teusday, April 20 and will be closed for entries on Thursday, April 29.
Where to send entries: Pm them to Blaizekit. Entries posted in the thread or entries sent before the contest is officially open will be ignored.

Recruiting Contest: Invite your friends to join the guild!
Recruit people to the guild and have them put in their join request "referred by (your name)" whoever has the most wins.
While we are trying to promote TDM, please do not resort to spam. If you are unsure whether something you want to do could be considered spammy, ask me or pm Blaizekit about it and one of us will share our thoughts.
Anyone can win. This contest is completely unrelated to teams. However, all Crew are ineligible, as they have the ability to accept join requests.
The prize: At least 20k, may be more
Dates: Ends on Thursday, April 29

Spirit Contest: This is TDM's most important contest and where teams really become a factor. throughout the event, whichever group has the most enthusiasm will win for their cause a real-life donation of at least 10 dollars. This will go up depending on how many people I know IRL I can rope into this thing, for I am poor, but the amount will be at least that much. If I can’t find a way to donate directly to the cause, I’ll submit a general donation to ACS. Of course, you are welcome to make donations of your own. icon_blaugh.gif
So get out there and show your team spirit!! This will be done through the guild, where you can chat with your team, organize get-togethers, and post your art/avis/and photos.
The spirit contest is based on how organized and enthusiastic your team is. There are a lot of ways a team shows their spirit. They take the initiative to recruit more people, hold their own contests, and organize meetings in Towns and basically act as if they genuinely care about awareness of their type.
Due to the nature of this kind of contest, we want to make sure that the people doing these things aren't out for personal gain. Because of that, there is no Gold prize for this. The team deemed "most spirited" will receive a real-life donation for their type.

Nartian Raffle:
This raffle will be a part of the TDM Farewell Party that will be held at the end of the month. This is a formalwear event that will be held in Towns, with a door-prize raffle of sorts. This is a time-sensitive contest: it will begin and end the same day. While we are hanging out together, a thread will be set up on the main forum where people that want to participate can post their lucky number. A number will be randomly drawn at the end of the event and the winner will receive the most fantastically daffodilly item of them all, Nartian Rock!

The Prize: Nartian Rock

Dates: Saturday, May 1

Event

Cancer Walk Through Towns:
Last year this event was done as a TDM event. I was, however, just informed that this event is now going to be handled by the individual teams. In this event members meet in towns at a given time and place. Then members walk through how many ever sections of towns they want/can spreading cancer awareness. To share the fun and have the walk count towards the team spirit contest, some members should take screencaps and post them in this thread or pm them to me so I can post them on the front page. Something really fun to do is while doing the walk, take some time every now and then to form the avatars into cancer awareness shapes, words, etc. Since this is now a team event, we can set as many walks as we want to.
ONE THING TO CONSIDER: while walking through towns, trolls will be on the loose saying rude things. Whoever sets up the walk needs to encourage members to ignore the trolls and keep things from getting out of hand.
As I am a student, and I work a job that tends to get busy during the end of the semester, I probably will not be starting or participating in many of these walks. Team Members who would be so gracious as to set up walks can pm me the dates, time (make sure to include the timezone), and place, and I will post the information on the front page.

Blue Avatar Themes

For anyone who might be struggling to come up with fresh blue looks, here are a few themes that might spark some ideas. (You do not by any means have to stick to these themes, they are just aids to help keep any blue boredom away)

Week 1 (April 4-10) Diagnosis: during this week dress up as doctors, nurses, cancer, family, anything you can think of that might surround someone being diagnosed with cancer

Week 2 (April 11-17) Fight: Put on your best battle gear for this week because we are not going to let this thing beat us!

Week 3 (April 18-24) Party!: We beat the cancer! Time to Celebrate! The party can be formal or casual, doesn't matter because it is your party!

Week 4 (April 25-30) Support: Dress your avi to look like Colon Cancer Awareness merchandise or events.

User ImageRULES--------------------------------
----O
ne of the reasons why the Movement is being held within the guild this year (aside from the obvious
benefits of organization) is that here we will actually be able to enforce our rules.

►Don't spam. It'll just get deleted.

►Follow Gaia's ToS

►Do not quote any large blocks of text, such as any of the posts on the front page of the main thread or a team's thread.

►Please read the FAQs before asking a question. That way we can be sure that we have plenty of time to answer any unusual or specific questions, instead of answering the same common ones over and over.

►Contacting Blaize/crew: We are likely to be very busy around this time. Questions and Yellow Wall entries will have priority over any art or banners you send, or affiliate/Turn TDM requests. Please be patient with us.

►Be supportive of one another! Try to get along.

►And most importantly, strive for positivity. I encourage you to share your stories and feelings concerning cancer, cancer awareness, and the like, but this will not be a pity-party. Many people may be going through cancer themselves or seeing someone they love dealing with it. We’re here to hope for the best. heart

Blaizekit
User ImageFAQ--------------------------------
----F
requently asked questions from previous years of the Movement

Please read these before asking Blaize or crew

---------►Where do I send my entry for the Tektek contest?
---------------PM them to Blaizekit. Entries posted in the thread or entries sent before the contest is officially open will be ignored.

---------►Do individuals send in their Tektek entries, or is it one entry for every team?
---------------Individuals enter. The best from each team will win a prize. Sometimes there will also be runners-up, depending on the number of
---------------entries and the closeness of the judging.

---------►Can I be on more than one team?
---------------You are more than welcome to post whatever ribbons you want in your signature or around the site to show your support.
---------------However, when it comes to official teams, you have to pick just one. This is especially important for the spirit contest. You can only
---------------follow your team's events.

---------►How do I join a team? What do I have to do for my team?
---------------It's not all that scary. All you have to do is post in the HQ of the team you want, saying you want to join. Make sure the team
---------------Captain adds your name to the list, and voila! You have a team. Depending on what your team's Captain wants to do, there might
---------------be events or contests that your team is doing. None of these are required for membership. They're just for fun! The important
---------------thing is just to support your team with a whole heart. Put its ribbon in your signature. Dress up in your team colors. The team
---------------that's deemed the most spirited wins a real-life donation for that type of cancer, so shake those pom-poms!

---------►Do I have to be on a team to be a part of the Movement?
---------------No. You don't even have to post in the thread. The most important thing about the Movement is making the cause visible. All you
---------------really need to do to be a full-fledged participator is to wear the bouquet and point our way if anyone asks about it. (:

---------►I want to help the Movement. Where do I send my gold, items, and daffodils?
---------------Donations should be sent to TDM Event Mule. Donations of gold help us give better prizes in the contests, and yellow items give
---------------the mule something cool to wear. (Items are sold at the end of the Movement to go toward next year.) Please do not send us
---------------daffodils unless they are already made into a bouquet. It is too expensive and time-consuming for us to turn hundreds of daffodils
---------------into bouquets by ourselves. We'd rather use our gold pool for prizes, so please only donate bouquets. (:

---------►I wanna show my support by wearing a daffodil bouquet during the whole month of April, but can't make or buy one. What's
----------------this about free bouquets?

---------------You're in luck! Many generous Gaians have donated daffodil bouquets to us, so that we may pass them along to whoever needs
---------------one. To request a bouquet, just send a labeled trade to TDM Event Mule.

---------►Do I have to wear a *yellow* daffodil bouquet?
---------------No. You can wear whatever color you want.

---------►Why can't (insert name of cancer here) be a team?
---------------This is only the second year that the Movement has had teams as part of the event. Chances are the number of teams and which teams
---------------are chosen will change a little from year to year. I am always listening out for which teams have the most demand. (: There are a couple
---------------of teams that are relatively small, like Melanoma, that I will never toss out just because of personal preference.

~For men, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer after prostate and lung cancers.
~For women, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer after breast and lung cancers.
~Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, but it doesn't have to be. If everybody aged 50 or older has regular screening test, as many as 80% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented.
