I'll keep you my dirty little secret...

I recently read in an article that if you do the same kind of exercises every single day, your body will get used to it and save calories for that exercise, causing you to burn less calories. The article stated that it would be good to change your workout, that way your body can't get used to it.

Now I was wondering; is that also true with food? I eat nearly the same thing every day, could that be the reason why my weight loss has hit a plateau?

Thanks for reading. c:

I do believe that's true. If you lift say, 15 lbs and 10 reps everyday, you muscles will tone up and it will be easier for them, which exerts less energy burning fewer calories. That's why when weight lifting it's important to increase the weight gradually.

It's pretty easy to combat this though, just change up your routine and try new things. So depending on the exercise, you can increase the duration, reps, weight, etc.

Actually, I tend to change my exercise routine, but I was wondering about eating. Does eating similar things every single day make your body get used to those calories?

I don't think it would. Your body see's it just as a fuel source nothing more. You should change your exercise routine every month to keep losing calories. Even if you increase the reps and sets for that exercise for that month, it wont do anything. Your body will be used to that "exercise"

@Kitsune: Okay, thanks for clearing that up! c:

Although now that I think about it, I stick with the same exercises, so if changing the weight doesn't affect anything, maybe that's the reason that my weight hasn't really changed. Perhaps I'll exercise at different times of the day.

I haven't researched this by any means but I find I lose more weight when I'm eating similar healthy things. Ie: hot cereal, every morning.

No, it's not that way with food. Your body just breaks it down into its component parts, and those all look the same regardless of what food it came from. Definitely vary your exercise though, because your body can get used to that and you'll lose less weight.

Can anyone tell me how varied exercise should be? What's worked for you?

Generally you shouldn't do the same kind of cardio week-in, week-out. Instead of running every day, run 2 times a week, then cycle, do stairs, swim, etc. Running is a very repetitive motion and cross-training is almost always required. Most runners switch it up and swim or cycle.

And don't lift the same weight in the same way every day.
When the weight is no longer challenging enough, add a bit more. I like water jugs for this reason. You can add a little more without it being insane or having to buy new weights for a 1 pound difference. Do arms one day, legs another, buns another, and abs another. Or pair it up and switch off like that, arms + abs and then legs + buns. :]
