So I decided to take advantage of going to the gym at school (for free heart ) , but I don't know what to do! I went for the first time today and the only thing I did was get on the treadmill because that's the only thing I was familiar with stressed
Any advice for a beginner?

My advice would be ask someone who works at the gym. I'd imagine it was their job to know what machines do what and show you how to properly use them.

If you're interested in freeweights (reccomended - getting stronger muscles helps you burn more fat when you do cardio!), you can pick up a book at any bookstore with exercises to do. 3nodding

You school should have a program where you can get a free fitness test with a trainer who will show you how to use things in the gym.
There's not an option for working out at the gym and at home, so I picked gym, but I do both.

Yeah, there was like only one trainer there and he was helping somebody. I wasn't there long enough anyways. I'll ask them next time =D. __penguin__ If you're interested in freeweights (reccomended - getting stronger muscles helps you burn more fat when you do cardio!), you can pick up a book at any bookstore with exercises to do. 3nodding OH Yeah! I forgot I had some books at home with exercises in it. xD. Thanks. If you don't know how to do something and someone's busy, then watch what the other people do. And on weight machines, there should be some sort of diagram. You can study that too.

I go to my university gym three times a week with my girl friends. We always start off with 30-40 minutes on the eliptical machines and chat, then we do some sit ups and stretching as our cool down. And that's it. We never use the weight machines because we don't want to get muscles. So, just cardio and sit ups.
When I work out at home I usually skip for 20 minutes or so, do 120 crunches, do basic weight lifting with my 5 pound weights, and throw in 20 or so push ups.
As long as you're being active and eating right, you should see some results.

I could have more time there, but I wait on my friend to get out of class so we can go together =D.

I go alone on Fridays because they get out of classes two hours after me, and I find myself a lot less motivated and I count down every minute. If you do end up going alone, I would recommend bringing a magazine. I've seen several people with them and I imagine it'd make it less tedious, I think I'm bringing one with me tomorrow.

I read books for fun. I find it hard to full out run but I can do a nice paced speed walk and read.
I would also recommend music, especially if you don't like/want to read. I've also started looking into audiobooks, something I'll enjoy and then listen to while working out. I hate just walking on the treadmill. I get bored. So anything to distract me is a good thing.
