Ok so I'm sure we've all heard Earth has been visited by Aliens. But the point of this isn't to actually discuss Aliens themselves but rather a What if scenario I found controversial. So the Story of this goes One day as i sat in my room listening to the radio, they happened to be talking about the Pope that day and I happen to hear them quote the Pope saying something along the lines of "If Aliens are discovered then it won't disprove Christianity." Now the What if scenario that spins off this is Say one day we discover Aliens, they say they've been to Earth countless times before. So what do you all think? Would your religion be disproved if Aliens were discovered and claimed to have visited Earth time and time again.
My thought on this is yes it would disprove almost every religion but Buddhism. Why because the Aliens would have been considered gods back in ancient times and would have been revered. So now adays they would disprove religions but Buddhism, only because it doesn't really have gods.

I says no.
My mother believes that Jesus left Earth, to tend to his flock.
On other planets.
So, it wouldn't disprove her beliefs, at least.
And it wouldn't disprove mine, as I believe in something similar to Buddhism.

God is God of all. The Bible doesn't say they exist, but it doesn't say they don't either. I figure if it was that big a deal, it would have made its way in.

"OH SHI-SCIENTOLOGY WAS RIGHT!"

Jk jk, calm down xD

I believe in "aliens" but not like...9 foot green creatures.
I think moon cats or some other type of animal exists out there..But I dont think an Alien will fit the mold we've made at all.

I also DONT think that alien-creatures will disprove religion.

It depends a bit, but for the most part no, it doesn't. Take the Avatar movie-they had a female god. The weird thing is her name sounded a bit like YHWH. If those types of aliens were found, you could argue that God revealed Himself to them in a different way, but it was still Him. An evil race you could argur He abandoned, and an animal-like race (which would be the most-likely to be found) you wouldn't reall have to worry about it. The only way it might be absolutely disproved is of they were a good race who believed, as a whole, something entirely different, and even then you'd have people saying it didn't matter.

Reinterpretations would be made of the religious text would be made if we ever established an extended communication with the aliens.

You're making a very large assumption, or group of them- Namely, that the aliens would have interfered, that there interference was what the people saw as the basis of their religions, and that the people took what the aliens said.

so, essentially, if aliens came down and said "Yeah, we ******** with you about 2000 years ago or so and made you think we were gods", that would probably disprove christianity. Their existence or prior visits would not, at all.

in Japanese religion, the whole creation story only deals with Japan, and does not even bother to discuss the rest of the earth!

our religions tend to focus on what concerns us most, what is closest to hand.

but if some new information comes from outside, i would not feel threatened at all.

i doubt that it will, though. why should some superior race give a hoot about our little backwater world?

To all those who say it wouldnt and most of you have. Defend yourselfs. Why wouldnt it if they said they came to Earth Before and did w/e with us.

Ugh...
Them saying they have come to Earth wouldn't make me believe them, first of all. Second of all, it's entirely possible they won't claim to have ******** with us 2000 years ago, and if they did, what about the religions that came before it? ((Islam, Judaism, Paganism, Shinto, etc.))
How early are you claiming they have come?
PostPosted: Tue Jan 12, 2010 10:08 pm

Of course it would effect religions but it wouldn't wipe them all out. Who says the aliens aren't great liers who only want to enslave the human race and claim to be our gods in order to do so. That's what I would do if I was an alien and came upon gullible earthlings....

jk...

Here's what I think would happen.... about half of the people in different religions would find that it disproves their religions. Some people may joins the aliens religion if they have some and are peaceful enough (this is many many decades after we get over the prejudices that are bound to happen, of course a few people might join almost immediatly...) There will be those (that are already claiming today that aliens are in the bible and possibly other religious texts) that will only have their faith strengthened by this because it would prove their different theories. And so on and so forth there will be new religions, new versions of old religions ect...

Now time for my beliefs which I am forming and Avatar actually reminded me of this idea (I came up with the theory like five or more years ago but am not entirely sure its an original thought or something I picked up from elsewhere) Perhaps every planet has either a single god or pantheon of them. Maybe each species has their own special connection with their gods and have varying degrees of actual REAL communication with them based on the personality of their dieties.

Of course like I said earlier this is still being formed within my mind....

My defense (remember I'm still forming this thought so it might not be as strong as I feel it to be) is that so many cultures, despite their different names for her, often refer to mother earth.... This would make our goddess feminine, which are normally more mysterious than men and would explain the mystery surrounding the relationship and sometimes lack thereof with the (can't think of the proper word... something that describes diety, planet, spiritual world, ect...).

As someone who is searching for religion and is thinking they might have made a breakthrough tonight I would greatly appreciate any input maybe sent in pms if it isn't on topic. Please and thank you.

1. Even if aliens did visit the earth thousands of years ago, that doesn't mean that people would just assume they were gods. And even if they did, it implies that humans would have had some sort of concept of gods before aliens came in order to associate the aliens with being gods.
2. There have been plenty cases where humans were mistakenly thought to be gods. Just because it's aliens and not humans doesn't really mean anything.
3. Most religions teach that gods created the world. Unless these were highly, highly, highly advanced aliens who had the ability to form whole worlds and create life, then I imagine most people who believe in gods would still believe in gods. And even if the aliens could create planets/life, there would still be the issue of who created the aliens and their planet, making me think that at the most people's religious beliefs would just shift, not die out.

Anyway, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I really don't understand what you mean when you say it would disprove nearly all existing religions. I mean, it might disprove certain parts of any religions which claim there aren't aliens, but besides that I don't think it would really prove or disprove anything.

i was a teenager when i was told that there are'worlds beyond number' out there, and that some of those worlds contain life, apparently similar to ours. so it wouldn't discredit the religion i grew up in.
our records just cover earth; it doesn't necessarily imply that earth is the only source of life

Ok to clearify since most don't understand what my What if is saying. Im asking if Aliens came at a point in are History when the world was only Pagan and ******** with us then. Came back when Noah, Jesus and other Worldly prophets were around and ******** with us again.
What I mean is say that they did come when Jesus was said to be alive or Noah or whoever it doesnt matter so much the person but it just has to be a famous religious prophet. Well the Aliens being MUCH MUCH more high tec than us would have done things to prove they were Godly. Maybe some wanted to be worshipped over other so they did "miracles" like Make rocks into bread, cure a blind man of his illness or w/e else Jesus did. Maybe they were the Light Moses saw and they gave him the Commandments not God. That's how it would disprove most Dualistic Religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam intended there). As for Pagan religions it would disprove their gods like Oden or Thor, Isis, Ra, Zeus and so on by the Aliens being said gods. While I'm completely aware this is a big stretch it is a possibility since WERE NOT THE ONLY LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE!! But anyway now that i hopefully cleared up the fogginess please defend your views.
