___________________________Strix, also known as striges, are witches who transformed into screech owls at night and, in this form, preyed upon infants by drinking their blood and sometimes eating their internal organs as well.
* The earliest recorded tale of the strix is from the lost Ornithologia of the Greek author Boio, which is partially preserved in Antoninus Liberalis's Metamorphoses. This tells the story of Polyphonte and her two sons Agrios and Oreios (their father being a wild bear), who were punished for their cannibalism, like Lycaon, by being transformed into wild animals. Polyphonte became a strix "that cries by night, without food or drink, with head below and tips of feet above, a harbinger of war and civil strife to men".
* The first Latin allusion is in Plautus's Pseudolus dated to 191 BCE, in which a cook, describing the cuisine of his inferiors, compares its action to that of the disembowelling a hapless victim.
* Horace, in his Epodes, makes the strix's magical properties clear: its feathers are an ingredient in a love potion. Seneca the Younger, in his Hercules Furens, shows the striges dwelling on the outskirts of Tartarus.
* Ovid (Fasti, vi.101 ff.) tells the story of striges attacking the legendary king Procas in his cradle, and how they were warded off with arbutus and placated with the meat of pigs, as an explanation for the custom of eating beans and bacon on the Kalends of June.
The concept of the strix was nonetheless vague. The scientific Pliny, in his Natural History confesses little knowledge of them; he knows that their name was once used as a curse, but beyond that he can only aver that the tales of them nursing their young must be false, since no bird except the bat (at the time commonly and wrongly classified as a bird, with the exception of Aristotle who considered the bat as halfway between bird and land animal) suckled its children.
Roman poet Ovid, by the way, suggested three possible theories as to the origin of Striges. They were either:
* born as striges
* enchanged
* hags put under a spell
The Synod of Rome, dated 743, outlawed offerings to Striges. In 744 “A list of Superstitions” drawn at the Council of Leptinnes renounced “all the works of the Demon and all the evil beings that are like them”. Many laws were then passed forbidding belief in pagan spirits, punished sometimes (as in Saxony, back in 789) with execution.
In the Middle Ages striges were said to be servants of Satan and his demons.
The appearance and sound of the screech owl influenced Roman ideas of the blood-drinking strix. The strix or striga (pl. striges; occasionally corrupted to stirge) was an Ancient Roman legendary creature, usually described as a nocturnal bird of ill omen that fed on human flesh and blood, like a vampire. Unlike later vampires, it was not a revenant.
Appearance
A strix is depicted as a blood-drinking bird, with huge talons, misshapen heads, breasts full of poisonous milk.
Behaviour/Features
* Striges were said to be very fond of livers and internal organs.
* They fly by night and no barriers may keep them out.
* A Strix could prey upon sleeping men (by turning into women and had sexual intercourse in order to suck their life-force off) and children (by offering them the poisoned milk).
How to ward off a Strix
Crane in Ovide’s sprinkles the door way with "drugged" water and places a branch of hawthorn in the window. In much later European lore, hawthorn is often considered as effective as garlic for the purpose of warding away or confining the undead vampires and the best material for stakes to pound through their hearts.
Etymology
The word has a Greek origin and means "owl", with which bird it is usually identified. The Latin feminine plural form of "stryx" is "striges". In the modern Italian language, "striga" has become a general word for "witch".
The association of Striges with screech owls gave rise to the term owl-blasted, meaning wasting-away spell cast upon a man. The term was popular in Britain through the 16th century.

LOOKS : Jade looks mostly like her mother. She has a slender form but is soft in the middle after having two children. She tried to jog everyday to keep her girlish figure. She has golden blonde hair but she's not one to fuss about her appearance. The one trait she inherited from her father were brilliant emerald colored eyes. They are her most striking feature.
PERSONALITY : At a young age Jade realized she just didn't have it in her to follow in her father's footsteps. With magic and all things extraordinary ruled out of her future, she became a regular girl. She enjoys shopping and talking on the phone, watching stupid television, and trying to redecorate her house on a regular basis. Over time she became rather comfortable with herself though all mentions to her sister Halo sow seeds of inadequacy. It's something that she has never managed to shake.
HISTORY : Jade comes from an unorthodox family. Her father, Algernon Michelin (he changed his last name upon his moving to town) is a powerful and well known wizard (well known if you run in those circles). Her half-sister Halo followed in his magical footsteps and always was the preferred child because of this. Jade tried her best in her younger years to use the mystic arts and dabble in the darkness of spells and curses, but never seemed to get the hang of it. Unwittingly, during one of her magical attempts, she attracted the attention of the Strix. Due to its unique feeding habits she hasn’t realized until recently that the demon has been affecting her for her entire life.
With her magical endeavors seemingly failed, Jade resigned herself at a young age to not be the prettier or more interesting daughter. She distanced herself from the family and started the most normal life she could. By 25 she'd been married and now at 30 she has two small children. Of course along with a 'normal marriage' came a 'normal divorce'. She's stayed in contact with her family but she doesn't often see them. Most recently she found out that Halo's been on an extended vacation and that their father Algie was staying in his daughter's home and keeping an eye on her teenage sons. Facing some troubles of her own, Jade has come to town to stay and with her sister out of the way for a while; she secretly hopes to bring about a closer relationship with her father. Not wanting to take them out of school, but still needing her own life change, her children remain in her old home town and are living with their birth father.

First summoned: Twenty years ago
Reason for Summoning: Acquisition of Magical Power
Personality: Thus far Strix has revealed itself to be mischievous and slightly playful. He isn't overly aggressive and prefers to just be around. He never strays far from Jade and it's unknown if this is because he can't or if he just prefers not to be. He has a strange fondness for her that he had yet to explain. Strix seems to be a natural trickster and a natural liar. He will never admit to lying, but rather calls it 'leaving out certain details'.
Needs: Strix feeds off of Jade's life force. This will leave her in a tired and weakened state. The more she utilizes the magic powers he's giving her, the less of the effects she will feel.
History: Nothing is yet known about Strix's past, but Jade intends to find out.
Powers:
*Shapechange :: Strix can slip back and forth between a humanoid and bird form. He takes the form of a grey Stygian Owl. He can also be all things inbetween. Sometimes he will appear only as a smiling mass of feathers. Even in his humanoid form (so far only a torso) he seems to flicker in and out of the mortal plane with the ruffling of feathers.
*Absorb Life Force :: Strix gains strength by sucking the life force from living things. This particular Strix has not yet displayed this on a grand scale so it is unknown whether he could kill with this power.
Because his original summoning twenty years ago was interrupted, Strix is not at full strength and seems stuck between the 'planes'. He is always sort of halfway 'here'. As he grows in power he will become much more solid and 'real'.

LOOKS : Algie is a good looking, middle aged man. Even though he is retired, Algie really isn't very old. He has light brown hair that is graying at the temples and a salt and pepper 5 o'clock shadow the majority of the time. As a retiree he feels no need to dress up unless on a special occasion. He's mostly seen in plain shirts with cardigans along with his standard pair of glasses. The only remarkable things about his appearance are his brilliant emerald colored eyes and a tattoo of a green dragon he has on his chest. This tattoo is rarely seen by anyone but himself.
PERSONALITY : Algie is a very laid back sort of man. His exciting lifestyle as a younger man fulfilled most of his life's goals and so now he is a pretty content sort of fellow. He is very giving, always willing and eager to help. He's very knowledgeable on various different subjects as a learned person would be. He doesn't have a significant other so he has a lot of love to give those in his family. He has seen his share of nightmares in his lifetime and he doesn't do much talking about his time "in service". He's quick with a smile and laughs at almost every joke. All around, Algie is just a very nice man.
HISTORY : After an exciting life through his twenties and thirties, Algie settled down. He spent some time teaching, a part time job, and even worked a bit in a book store owned by a friend. Most recently his daughter asked him to come and stay in her home to take care of her children while she went away to search for her missing husband. Algie, happy to spend time with his grandchildren and eager to help in any way, moved into her house where he has been living ever since. His grandsons are growing fast and need less and less attention. While Algie is an experienced and skilled wizard he usually only uses magic for everyday activities. Having spent most of his life with an emphasis on powerful magic, he now just avoids it unless it is a dire situation. He certainly wouldn't be someone you would want to threaten, though he avoids confrontation as much as possible. He may even be a bit of a pushover. He mostly reads and enjoys the garden while taking care of his kitten, Fizzgig.
His kitten is literally a fuzzy lump of cream colored fur with bright blue eyes. She's sort of like a tiny blob of kitten. Chubby.. fluffy.. and sleeps a lot. She's really small and can fit in his pocket. Name: Halo (Whether this is her real name or not is unknown)

Job(s) : Part-time writer. Owner of Passional, the "intimates" store of Port Gino. Before moving here she was known to have different jobs here and there but her main source of income is really unknown.
Appearance: Halo is on the average to tall size for a woman. She's gained a little weight in recent years, no longer as stick thin as she used to be, but she still is regarded as thin - yet curvy. Her hairstyles change often but she has dark hair that is never tampered with. Her clothing style is not solid but she is always in something relaxed. Getting older, though not visibly, has expanded her taste in clothes so that while relaxed, she always looks funky-yet-feminine. One of her arms is tattooed in a full sleeve, something that draws attention in a crowd.
Personality: Halo's personality is much different since she first arrived in Gaia. With all the life changing events since she arrived here, she's grown up and mellowed out. She is still the fun-loving crazy woman inside, but externally there is much more of an air of maturity about her. With her husband gone ( missing? ) she has lost her partner in crime and it has clearly affected her on some internal level.
Hobbies and Special Skills: Halo is very good with computers. She loves to read and write. She's a comic nerd and tends to watch cheesy TV and movies and LOVE them. She's also a video game addict and fits in gaming between work and comic book reading as much as possible.
Personal and Family History: Against her instincts the details of her family life have emerged over the last couple of years. Her father is a famous and powerful wizard named Algernon Mixlin (changed to Michelin when he moved to gaia) and she has a non-magical half-sister named Jade Mixlin. Her discussion of a brother has never been confirmed. There has been rumors that she may have a little bit of demon in her, but there is no evidence to support that.
Theres some talk of her having rather questionable origins based off of her fondness for motorcycles, weapons and leather. How she came to meet Wren is also a mystery that only the two of them know. She and Wren were inseparable before his disappearance.
She is currently roaming in search of her husband. Her children are being watched by her father.

Alejandro, Lafe, Otium, Mael and Freyr are Jade's nephews. They are her sister's adopted children and each is unique in some way. Being teenagers, they are raucous and independent and need almost no mandatory supervision.
Gaitano "Tom" Rosso and Carmine Valerio are the mysterious "uncles" of the family. Charming and capable, each has unique gifts but together they are a worrisome and dangerous power couple. They used to live in the house but have left to do their own thing.
Bloodstone is a departed soul, trapped in a stone and bound to Algie until the time is right for it to emerge.
