I've long since wanted to do a Steampunk RP. I came up with this idea a few days ago.
A talented, British inventor creates the first modern steam engine. One of the prototypes malfunctions, and his is blasted with a precise stream of hot steam, scarring him with burns. He continues his work, and perfects the design. He realizes the potential of his creation, and begins building vehicles based around it. Zepplin-like airships, Victorian-era tanks, mobile fortresses. He flees with the designs, starting to build an army. He threatens to conquer the Old World with his steam-powered armory. Fortunately, Her Royal Majesty, Victoria of England, was suspicious of this inventor. Her spies grabbed copies of the inventor's designs. Now, the stage is set, countries are choosing sides, and the Old World is ready for a war. A War by Gaslight.
*Notes: I thinking of naming the inventor-turned-madman James Murdock, in honor of William Murdoch, creator of the prototype steam engine to be used for railroad useage.

Would the role-play be based around the battle, or will there more to it than that?

Does this inventor have any particular motivation? Would we be replaying on behalf of the Old World nations or for this inventor?

To answer your questions. The RP will be around a war situation. Players get to choose either being alligned with the countries under the inventor's sway or with the European countries that oppose him.
Murdockian-allied (at the moment): Germany Russia Italy Greece
Anti-Murdockian: The United Kingdom of England (Britain, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland) France The Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal)

Well this inventor seems like a forward thinking kind of guy. Doubtless his reign of terror will bring in immediately after it a swathe of civil liberties and social justice!
Hurrah for Doctor Murdoch! Only he can free the oppressed masses of the old world! gonk

Okay.....second idea. I was thinking of something similar to Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentleman, but with more emphasis on a Steampunk-type technology. I have a list of possible characters to be placed. Some names are changed for those with copyrights or given to those character's that weren't named in their respective books.
Vlad Dracula - The vampire from Bram Stoker's novel. Maybe changed to an antihero. Ulrich von Frankenstein - The reanimated man from Mary Shelly's novel. Griffin T. Smith - The Invisible Man from H.G. Wells. Spring-Heeled Jack - Victorian-Era figure of English Folklore. Devil-like or Bat-like appearance or costume (like a Victorian Batman). Could jump very high. Phileas Fogg - Around the World in Eighty Days. Possibly done as a Steam-Sailor.
Any suggestions are welcomed.
